TCS Teachers Learn Together

TCS Teachers Learn Together

Four teachers and the Middle School Director, Heather Robinson, will be attending the Kagan Cooperative Learning Winter Academy professional development workshop in Tampa, FL on February 28 and March 1.  Kagan is a cooperative learning training that teaches brain-based instructional methods that increase engagement and learning capabilities in the classroom.

Kagan’s philosophy: “When students are engaged, they pay attention, they’re motivated, they learn more, and the learning sticks. The biggest difference between the Kagan approach and teaching using traditional methods is the ability to engage every student. As brain-research is proving, meaningful engagement is just a better way to reach and teach all students.”

We are excited to see what new things they will bring back to our classrooms!

Get ready for some 1950’s fun at Shake, Rattle & ROAR Spirit Week, March 3 – 7.  Students will enjoy Shake, Rattle, and ROARing activities as we gear up for the Mane Event on Saturday, March 8.  Here is the schedule of events:

Monday, March 3
“Sundae,” Monday, Happy Days!
Let’s kick off Spirit Week and the Mane Event by traveling back to the “Fabulous 50’s.”  You will get a glimpse of the 1950’s, and get ready for a special yummy treat! Last day to turn in your “Chance to Win” tickets.

Tuesday, March 4
“Let’s Go To the Hop!”
Sock hop dances in the school gym were all the fun back in the 50’s.  Kids danced in their socks to not damage the gym floors.  Students are invited to wear socks of their choice—crazier the better—with their regular TCS uniform.  “Chance to Win” winners will be announced.

Wednesday, March 5
“Roary’s Diner”
A favorite pastime in the 50’s was spending time with friends at the drive-in diner or at the soda fountain.  Today the winners of our “Chance to Win” will hang with their friends at lunch, have their Flippers Pizza & Kona Ice on the green space, and don’t forget– their very own FREE casual day.  Posters for the Poster Contest are due today!

Thursday, March 6
“Fabulous Fifties”
It was all about poodle skirts, leather jackets, letter sweaters, rolled up jeans, bobby socks, saddle shoes,  guys’ greased back hair and girls’ ponytails and scarves!  This is the day for your student to dress in 1950’s style!  If your student is not participating in this costume day the regular TCS uniform should be worn.

Friday,  March 7
“Rock Around the Clock”
Let’s celebrate the day before The Mane Event.  50’s fun will be in store at our TCS Spirit Day!  We will also announce the winner of our Poster Contest.

Inviting all students to enter our 2nd Annual Mane Event Poster Contest!
The winner of this year’s contest will receive a Fabulous and Fun Fifties themed gift basket, valued at $100.  Their poster will also be on display the night of the Mane Event.

Posters will be judged on creativity and use of theme

  • Posters should be standard size (28” X 22”)
  • Posters may be submitted March 3rd, 4th, and 5th to Mrs. McVige’s desk
  • Your NAME, GRADE, & TEACHER must be written on the BACK of the poster board
  • Posters should represent TCS in a tasteful way
  • Posters should be designed to welcome guests to the Mane Event & focus on the theme, Shake, Rattle & Roar
  • Students may enter 1 poster
  • Winner will be announced at Spirit Day on March 7.

Teachers Head to Class

Last week, 8 members of The Christ School faculty and staff attended the Florida Educational Technology Conference (FETC) for professional development on education and technology skills and curriculum. Teachers explored over 500 exhibits, attended various seminars, and heard from keynote speakers on ways technology is being used today in classrooms along with ideas for the future. Especially interesting classes included how to make imovies and incorporate them in the classroom as educational tools; how to use (40+) new websites to inspire learning; and how to make DNA from knex models.

The conference, at the Orange County Convention Center, had attendees from across the United States and 40 countries. TCS faculty returned inspired and energized to share new ideas, websites, and iPad applications with their students.  Thank you to our Annual Fund donors for helping to provide the resources that allowed The Christ School to offer professional development for our faculty and staff. Your gifts to the 2013-14 Annual Fund campaign are already at work!  If you have not yet made your gift, please do so today. The campaign runs through June 30, 2014 – it’s not too late!

A Note from The Christ School Clinic

This is the time of year when our clinic is seeing more students who are sick with cold-like symptoms.  Please remember to follow our clinic guidelines when your child is feeling under the weather.  Your child must be fever free for at least 24 hours without using fever reducing medication, i.e. Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen.  If your child has had diarrhea and/or vomiting, your child must be clear of these symptoms for at least 24 hours from the last episode before returning to school. Please remind your child to wash his/her hands often and with soap and water.  Washing will help keep germs from spreading to other family members and friends. For further information, please contact Donna MacNichol, TCS clinician.

Engineering Club Thrills Audience

The Middle School Engineering Club is a fun and exciting club inspired by Rube Goldberg’s comic genius.  Mr. Goldberg, an engineer and cartoonist during the mid 20th century, was most famous for his cartoon drawings of complex contraptions.  A Rube Goldberg contraption – an elaborate set of arms, wheels, gears, handles, cups and rods, put in motion by balls, canary cages, pails, boots, bathtubs, paddles and live animals – takes a simple task and makes it extraordinarily complicated.

In Engineering Club, each student has an opportunity to use his or her God given imagination, creativity, and ingenuity to design and construct a single step in the machine.  The group then works together to link all of the parts together into a complicated series of chain reactions ending in our very simple task of ringing a desk top bell (and pushing an Easy button).

Rube Goldberg in the dictionary is defined as “a comically involved, complicated invention, laboriously contrived to perform a simple operation”…a definition that would also apply to Engineering Club!

Middle School Kicks Off the New Year

For the first middle school Chapel of the new year, students were asked to write down New Year’s resolutions – something about themselves that they would like to change or improve upon this year.  Mr. Hedrick then led a discussion that focused on the typical failures of resolutions for most people. He pointed out a very distinct difference that we, as Christians, have.  We have Christ on our side to help us as we strive to constantly be better.  To symbolize this point, students were then asked to take their written resolutions and put them upon a paper cross displayed at the front of the room.  The end product was a cross laden with hopes for our students’ new year – a powerful visual example of something we can all remember this year.

Friday is FSU Celebration Day at TCS!

Rare experiences of greatness warrant special celebrations. For just the third time in the past seven years, the Head of School has designated a special uniform day to commemorate a state university winning the college football national championship.  In celebration of Florida State University’s perfect 14-0 unconquered football season, the Head of School has declared Friday, January 10, 2014, as FSU Celebration Day in honor of the Florida State University National Championship Football team.  TCS students may wear FSU shirts to school on Friday. All other Friday uniform guidelines apply. Congratulations to the Seminoles for “doing it big, then!”

Cashual Day: Friday, December 20

Friday, December 20, is a Cashual Day! Students may dress in casual attire for a $1 donation. Proceeds from this Cashual Day will benefit Bags of Hope Central Florida’s Kids Club. Their Kids Club helps children who are homeless or displaced, severely impoverished, and suffering from daily hunger.

They bring care packages full of food for these children to school, meet with them to lift their spirits and encourage their continued academic growth and literacy with books to read; as well as, have discussions about future goals and dreams.

The goal of the Kid’s Club Program is to empower children who are living in circumstances beyond their control to focus their attention on what they have control over – their EDUCATION – to end the cycle of poverty and change their futures

Fifth Grade Students Inspired by Classmate

Our TCS fifth graders were inspired and led by fellow student, Alejandra Gonzalez-Acosta, to aid the victims of the November typhoon in the Philippines.  Alejandra states:  “We are The Christ School and should share the light of Christ with those in need.”  After prayer and research, Samaritan’s Purse was selected as the service organization to use.  Funds were most critically needed, so the students made a goal of raising $300.  Their hearts were touched and generosity abounded, leading to almost $500 donated.  This love and service to people unknown is exactly what The Christ School is all about; learning and sharing His love and light with neighbors near and far.  Congratulations, fifth grade!

Middle School Service Project Answers Prayer

Middle school students began collecting toiletries, socks and food items to make gift bags for the patrons of Compassion Corner several weeks ago.  Unbeknownst to our students, Compassion Corner’s budget had been downsized to eliminate Christmas gifts for their patrons.  Their staff had been praying for something they could give to their guests and were concerned that no gifts would be distributed this year.  In steps TCS!  The gift bags organized and coordinated by our middle school students will be presented to the patrons at their Christmas party this week.   Prayer answered!

Middle School Science

Students were given the task to creatively represent an atomic model of any element.  The projects were graded on accuracy, creativity and intricacy.  Winners were decided upon by anonymous student judging combined with the teacher’s assessment.  Winning models included a 3-dimensional model of Beryllium that showed the inner and outer rings as a motorized spinner was activated and a Helium model that included a fishbowl as the nucleus and live fish representing the protons and neutrons.  Congratulations to our winners:

1. Kara Gentry (Neon Glow-in-the-dark Beryllium)

2. Luke Gidus (Fish Helium)

3. Camille Kalis (Bumble Bee Helium)

4. Carlyn Dilley (Baseball Beryllium)

5. Victoria Petrucelly (Shell and Sand Carbon)

6. Marisa Muhart (Fish and Shell Lithium)

8th Grade Visits the Courthouse

Following their study of American Government, 8th grade students were able to put their learning to good use at the Orange County Courthouse.  Each year, Judge Wilfredo Martinez hosts a mock trial with our students in a real courtroom.  Students are given roles for every part of a real trial including judge, jury members, prosecutors, bailiffs, defense attorneys, the plaintiff and the defendant.  This is an example of how our downtown location enhances learning.

2nd Grade Studies Native Americans

The second grade “Flour Nation” spent the past few weeks learning how Native Americans used natural resources to survive.  Students prepared Indian Fry Bread, shucked corn, snapped beans, baked pies, and designed Native American clothing for their Pow Wow and Feast. Curriculum integration continued as the students made pinch pots in art and created topography dioramas to help illustrate their individual oral reports. The Native American unit combined a variety of learning techniques for the students.
