Special Gifts Enrichment Class

What can you do with a raisin, 20 toothpicks, 5 paperclips, a block of wood, 8 mailing labels, a cube of clay, plastic straws, a Styrofoam cup, and some raw noodles?  Build a catapult, of course!

Did you know that for hundreds of years pharmacies had an apothecary jar in their front window that they would fill as a signaling device?  If the jar was filled a red fluid it signaled visitors to avoid the area due to quarantine; green fluid signaled that all was well.  The jars were lit by candles so they could be seen from far away.  What would you use to fill an apothecary jar and what would it signal?

These are just two of the spontaneous projects that students were assigned in Special Gifts Enrichment classes as part of the Odyssey of the Mind program. Projects like this provide students a fun way to work in teams while learning critical and creative thinking strategies on not-so-typical activities.

First Quarter Report Cards and Awards

Look for first quarter report cards in backpacks on Friday. If your child is receiving an award this quarter, their report card will be stamped with the appropriate award: Star Scholar, Super Star Scholar, Honor Roll, or Distinguished Honor Roll.

Please join us in chapel for the recognition of our Star/Super Star Scholars in grades 2-5 and our Honor/Distinguished Honor Roll students in grades 6-8.

The ceremony for grades 2-5 will be immediately following Lower School Chapel on Tuesday, November 5, in the Sanctuary and the middle school ceremony will be during middle school Chapel on Wednesday, November 13, at 8:15 am in the Reformation Chapel.

TCS Students Visit Orlando Philharmonic

Last week, TCS 1st through 5th grade students attended “Heroes and Legends: A Young People’s Concert” at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre.  The Orlando Philharmonic performed pieces based on various heroes including William Tell Overture, Toreador, and The Incredibles.  Alejandra Gonzalez-Acosta and Brogan Tagman represented The Christ School on stage singing the Star-Spangled Banner at the beginning of the concert.  It was a wonderful opportunity to experience live music.

Shaping Students’ Hearts with One Great Day of Service

The Christ School’s One Great Day of Service is this Friday! This event involves the participation of all students and faculty, as well as parents, who will spend their day serving in the community.

Each grade will be helping with age-specific activities at various community service facilities. Service activities range from cleaning park facilities to organizing and distributing donations. Not only are they providing much needed volunteer services for the local community, the students’ educational experience is enhanced by learning more about the community in which they live.

This heartwarming experience teaches a valuable lesson – donating their time and energy brings joy, not only to themselves, but to others. Each child walks away from One Great Day knowing what it means to look beyond themselves to the needs of others, and to love their neighbors as themselves.

Volunteering is a great tool to help children boost their social skills as they reach out and connect with their community. The Christ School knows the benefits of volunteering are enormous to the students as well as local organizations they will serve. Dr. Jason Powell said, “The Christ School mission is intentionally focused on cultivating the scholarship, service and leadership skills of our students. Our vision is that each TCS graduate is committed to being others oriented. On Friday, October 11, all of our students will experience a powerful day that will help shape their hearts.”

Former Magic Player Speaks at TCS Chapel

Keith Tower, former NBA player (1993-1997) and Senior Pastor at Highpoint Church in Orlando, spoke at chapel with TCS mom, Paige Greninger, on Monday to kick off the week of service in preparation for One Great Day.  With all the great service the students will be performing on Friday, Monday’s charge focused on encouraging the students to serve in little ways the other 364 days of the year.  Keith shared a story about playing basketball with Shaq while on the Orlando Magic team – and reminded us that “little things make a big impact.” Keith ended his talk by sharing a quote from his former Orlando Magic coach, Brian Hill, “You don’t become great by doing big things some days, but by doing the little things every day.”

PTF Spirit Bible Study

TCS women and friends are invited for 6 weeks of fellowship as we study and discuss the word of God through the Kelly Minter study “Ruth: Loss, Love & Legacy”.

Join us Wednesday mornings, 8:30-10:00 a.m. or Wednesday evenings 7:00-9:00 p.m. starting September 25th.  We regret that childcare is not available. Expense of study is $12.95 (the cost of the study book).

Please contact Jen Bostedo at 407-496-1812 by Friday, September 20th to register or for more information.

Ruth: Loss, Love & Legacy

Ruth: Loss, Love & Legacy is a women’s Bible study of Ruth’s journey of unbearable loss, redeeming love, and divine legacy.  This 6-week study delves into the virtuous character of Ruth, her unique relationship with her mother-in-law Naomi, and her blossoming love with Boaz. If you’ve ever felt devastated, struggled as a stranger, longed to be loved, or wept along the way, you’ll find a loyal sister in Ruth.

Solar System

On Friday, May 31st, the seventh grade science students, with the help of science teacher Mrs.Kuplen,  presented the solar system to the parents. Students worked in pairs to create a layer of the sun and planet. On the day of the presentation, the students presented their models along with a short definition about their planet and sun part. They also put together a little ditty to the tune of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”  As each student presented, they added a piece to the solar system, eventually creating our entire solar system.

Reflections from the Dominican Republic

The 8th grade class trip to the Dominican Republic was an absolutely amazing experience.  The entire trip was an example of God’s grace and how it transcends cultures, languages and life’s circumstances.  Our students, parents and teachers worked with Mission Emanuel to help provide a solid floor and refurbished walls to Andrea, a member of the Cielo community.  They also spent a significant amount of time building relationships with the children in the community-showing God’s love through play and laughter.  At the end of the week, we got a chance to visit a Leprosarium where our hearts were touched so deeply by the residents of that community.  Our students were able to stretch out of a comfort zone and truly show the love of Christ to these people.  It truly was a blessed week.
