Spoken Word

Middle school students have the opportunity to explore a variety of interests through elective classes. This semester, a new elective option, Spoken Word, allows students to use their creativity to deepen their writing, speaking, and presenting skills. The students have been working on staging and being comfortable with performance. They have been exploring various topics and creating themed poems with backgrounds to help infuse the emotion they want to convey. Presentations have been centered around Christ, things that inspire them and defining who they are through spoken word poetry. “I am impressed with my students’ creativity and thoughtful performance ideas,” says their teacher, Mr. Williams. “They have incorporated instruments and added rhythm to deepen the emotion of their presentations.”

Christmas Book Countdown

At the beginning of the Christmas season, Ms. DeLullo’s class discovered many wrapped books under their classroom Christmas tree. As a special surprise, Ms. DeLullo introduced the Christmas Book Countdown. Every morning students enter her room full of anticipation to see what the book of the day will be. A new book is unwrapped each day and the students take turns reading the book aloud to learn various aspects of the Christmas holiday. So far, the books have been about Jesus’ birth from the animals’ perspective, various legends of candy canes and Christmas trees, and some classics including How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Twas the Night Before Christmas. After all, a book is a gift that can be opened again and again!

Advent – Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love

Over the last few weeks, 6th grade Bible students have focused on Advent and the themes of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. They’ve dug deep into God’s Word and have reflected on various aspects of this Christmas season. During the week on hope, students considered how Mary may have felt; perhaps she was uncertain of what was to come or what others would think of her. Students were prompted to create a “Box of Peace” to send to Mary to comfort her when she may have felt worried and anxious. Ultimately, students uncovered God’s truths of finding hope when feeling hopeless, attaining peace when feeling worried, how to share the joy found in Christ, and how God sets an example of having unconditional love for each and every one of us.

Community Helpers

TCS first grade students have been learning about community helpers by exploring different occupations. The students were especially excited when TCS parents visited to share information on their jobs. To enhance the study, each student chose a community helper and researched the person’s occupation and how they help our community. The students then created buildings reflecting each professional’s workplace along with an informational poster to be used in an oral presentation. They also worked together to build a community in their classroom. TCS Art teacher, Mrs. DeLuca, assisted students in the creation of their buildings and STEAM teacher, Ms. Wilkins, guided students in the construction of their city. On Friday, parents were invited to see their communities and hear their research presentations.

Exploring Native American Tribes

Second grade students have been learning about Native American tribes and their regions. Using their research skills, they explored Epic! books and textbooks, took notes and transferred their notes into a poster board to give an oral presentation. The students dove deep into each region and recreated some of the tools and art the Native Americans made. As a class, they read “Thanksgiving on Thursday” and took part in a book study where they discovered even more about how the Native Americans helped the Pilgrims and about the very first Thanksgiving. They wrapped up this unit of study with a “feast” where they sat at a long table, shared a sweet treat and talked about things they are grateful for.

Get to Know – Nashown Williams

The Christ School has been delighted to welcome Nashown Williams to The Christ School team as 7th and 8th grade math teacher. “I am a husband, brother, uncle, and soon to be a father!” says Nashown. “My wife, Denise, and I have been together for twelve years; since high school, and have been married for two years. I love designing fish tanks with aquatic plants and I am a pretty good cook.”

“Education has had a tremendous impact on my life,” says Nashown. “My parents instilled education into five core principles when I was very young and I believe it is my duty to educate others. I have been inspired by the dedication of teachers to lead, listen to, and teach young people. I had wanted to be a teacher as I entered college, and earned my Master of Science in Curriculum & Instruction.”

“I am enjoying teaching the students here at TCS,” he continues. “The best part of teaching math to middle school students is watching the undeniable growth and progress they make. Day to day progress is difficult to put on a scale, but the data over time is quite impressive. I also love their growing personalities and work ethic.”

“At TCS, I am supported by my colleagues and students,” says Nashown. “I have been welcomed and feel more confident that I can make an impact on the students’ growth.”

Nashown shares his favorite Bible verse:
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. – 2 Timothy 4:1-3

Get to Know – Gerry Ortiz

Please welcome Gerry Ortiz, The Christ School’s Spanish Teacher. Gerry was born and raised in Puerto Rico, in the greater San Juan area. “I grew up playing basketball and baseball along with my two brothers, while my sister took more to academia than athletics,” he says. “I like movies; I like to analyze them not just for entertainment but as an artform. I enjoy everything from classic cinema like Citizen Kane to Marvel movies and indie films.”

“What made me want to teach as a profession was having great teachers myself,” says Gerry. “My teachers inspired me to be a lifelong learner and taught me how to think logically, how to solve problems and even how to relate to people and express myself with empathy and mutual respect. I gave a lot of thought to other professions like sports management but ultimately decided that education was the field for me. I’ve been teaching for close to 8 years now, including my work as an intern.”

“The thing I love most about teaching students a new language is their surprise; their amazement at what certain words look and/or sound like in another language or just as much of a surprise when they realize some English words are so similar or identical to Spanish words,” he says. “I’m asking the students, especially my 8th grade students, to speak the language as much as possible and so many of them sound very accurate. I look forward to seeing all of my students develop more fluency and confidence.”

Gerry says, “The best part about working at TCS is that my students put in the work and are reaping the benefits! Every day they come to me having practiced what they’ve learned, looking for new information or showing off what they worked on by themselves. This gladdens my heart and makes me really proud to be their teacher.”

Gerry shares his favorite Bible verse:
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.  – Matthew 6:34

Get to Know – Melissa Edwards

“God ordered my steps to join the TCS family,” says Melissa Edwards, who joined us this year as our 5th grade Bridge teacher. “I originally came to The Christ School for OG (Orton Gillingham) training and everything fell perfectly into place for me to start my journey here at TCS.”

“I have always wanted to work with students, even from a very young age,” says Melissa. “Teaching was a natural fit for my personality and my skill set. Teaching students who learn differently was a bonus part of the package, and I have really enjoyed learning alongside them. I want my classroom to be a safe space for students to learn and make mistakes. My class is amazing and they keep me young and on my toes!”

“I am enjoying working at The Christ School,” she continues. “I love the strong community and family feel of TCS. Good vibes all around from everyone!

Melissa is originally from Toronto, Canada. “I have 2 boys, ages 11 and 16, who keep me busy,” she says. “I like to travel and try new things. Here is a fun fact about me – I was once in a Bollywood Movie!”

Melissa shares her favorite Bible verse:
I can do all this through him who gives me strength. – Philippians 4:13

Epic Tales

Eighth grade students have been learning about and creating a Hero’s Journey. To analyze the Hero’s Journey archetype, they watched and read different Hero’s Journey narratives, such as Pixar’s Big Hero 6, The Odyssey, A Wrinkle in Time, and The Drummer Boy of Shiloh. They applied the elements of a Hero’s Journey archetype into their own illustrated narrative with a complex, original hero who not only embarks on a challenging journey to overcome a major feat but also teaches the reader a valuable lesson about life. After they completed the steps in the writing process, including drafting, sharing and responding with peers, and revising, they published and read their stories aloud to their classmates. Their teacher, Mrs. Sheldon, says, “We have some very talented writers in 8th grade. Who will submit their Hero’s Journey to a real publisher? I’m confident there are best sellers in this collection of stories!”

Get to Know – Erin Oglesby

The Christ School welcomes Erin Oglesby to our family. Erin, who joined our Bridge team as a 2nd grade teacher, has an engaging and welcoming personality that can make you feel like you are a familiar friend. “Truth be told, I am an alien,” Erin smiles. “No, not from Mars, but Montreal. When I was in first grade, my father, an Episcopal priest, was called to a new ministry in the United States. We left Canada during a blizzard and arrived in the Sunshine State wearing snowsuits! Don’t worry, there was a cold front and it was a cool 83 degrees. Since that move I have lived in Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, DC, and Maryland. I have been married almost 20 years to my college sweetheart and have two creative sons, Matthew and Andrew. I love the arts and have a passion for musical theatre. Here is a fun fact – years ago, I performed a solo cabaret show in Orlando at a dinner attraction.”

“God had a plan that I could never have imagined that brought me to The Christ School,” Erin continues. “I was researching schools and came across the amazing things TCS was doing to help students with dyslexia. At that time, I had multiple students in my classroom who were diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia and I was constantly looking for ways to best support their needs. After learning about TCS’s Bridge program, I mentioned it to my resource specialist in Maryland. I had long wished that our school could support students with a program like The Bridge. Flash forward a few months to a social media post calling for a teacher for Bridge and, well, the rest is history. There is not a doubt in my mind that God’s hand was guiding this incredible opportunity.”

“I love teaching,” says Erin. “Especially in the early elementary years. I love all the light bulb moments and the excitement and the passion they have for learning. I love to see the smile on my students’ faces when they ‘get it’. Now, that smile has a different meaning. That smile means so much more to me when I not only see, but know, how many obstacles that child has had to overcome in order to reach success. That smile is worth everything!”

Erin continues, “My class at TCS is spectacular. The students are creative, artistic, fabulous storytellers, and super funny. They come to school each day with a smile on their face and perseverance to conquer any challenge that may stand in their way. Each day I watch my students be more confident in themselves and their abilities. I treasure those moments when they look up from an activity or lesson and say ‘Mrs. O, look at what I did!’ I can’t wait to see how each of them bloom; not only academically, but also spiritually this year.”

“Not only do I love the students at TCS, but the faculty and staff are out of this world,” she says. “Christ’s love is everywhere! Everyone is so friendly and helpful. Moving to Orlando has been a huge transition for my family and TCS has gone over and above to make sure we feel welcomed and loved. All day, every day, the building is filled with smiles, laughter, and love. TCS really lives out their mission of sharing Christ’s love. My son, Andrew, started TCS in 6th grade this year. He is a showman and loves music, performing, and entertaining. Spotlight, the musical theater class here, has been such a wonderful experience for him. I know that he values the friendships and adventures TCS has provided in the short time we have been a part of the school.”

Erin shares her favorite Bible verses:

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. –  Jeremiah 29:11

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. – Philippians 4:13

“Every time I come across a difficult moment in my life, I remember these passages. I try my best to live my life to His glory and know He has this amazing plan and all I need to do is listen,” she says.

Get to Know – Nicole Kilpatrick

“I have always loved books and sharing my love for them with children,” says Nicole Kilpatrick, who joined The Christ School team as Media Specialist this year. “Sharing exciting stories with my students and helping them to develop a love of reading is such a joy.” Before coming to TCS, Nicole, a native of Wisconsin, taught third grade. “When I heard there was a Media Specialist position available at TCS I was excited about the opportunity. I have really enjoyed getting to work with students in various grade levels.”

“My favorite author is Ted Dekker,” Nicole continues. “I love stories that pull you into another world and make you want to keep reading. I am excited to share my favorite children’s books with the students. I want them to discover how stories can take you to different places and allow you to  explore new worlds.”

“As Yearbook Advisor, it has been wonderful to engage with my students and help them document all of the special moments at TCS. It is fun to see all of the things we do at our school through the eyes of my students.” she says.

“I am enjoying being a part of The Christ School,” Nicole says. “The best part of working here are the amazing people I get to work with; the staff and the students!”

Nicole has many varied interests including reading, crocheting, and playing board games. “A fun fact about me is that I used to do all types of dance including aerial acrobatics!” she smiles.

Nicole shares her favorite Bible verse:
“Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might.” –  Ecclesiastes 9:10
