Get to Know – Shelby McCastlain

The Christ School is pleased to introduce Shelby McCastlain, who joined our team this year as a third grade teacher. Shelby, who grew up in Oviedo, earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Florida. After college, she moved to Tampa to begin her teaching career.

“I think children are incredible. The way their minds work inspires me to be imaginative, fun, and to see the good in everything. I wanted to become a teacher because of my own experience in elementary school,” says Shelby.  “I went to a great school and I know how much it can impact the rest of your life. I wanted to be a part of that kind of community again, living each day building relationships and making lasting memories. This time, on the side of a teacher,” she says.

“My favorite thing about teaching third grade is the age of my students!” Shelby continues. “We laugh at the same jokes, talk about songs and movies we like, and have great conversations. Although they are getting older and more independent, they are still little and eager to learn each day.”

“This year, I am looking forward to the growth I will see in my students and in myself. I hope we grow academically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. My goal is for every child to walk out of my room everyday feeling loved and capable of anything,” she says.

Shelby has enjoyed being part of The Christ School community. “My favorite part about TCS is how the faculty and staff go above and beyond for each other and the students. I have never been in such a caring environment,” she says. “Every person I have met wants to lift others up in any way they can. The focus of everything is what is best for each individual student. When the school is described as Christ-centered, I’ve noticed that it’s not only the teaching of the Bible, it’s that Jesus’ light and love radiate through everyone who walks into this building. What an incredible thing to be around every day!”

Shelby has two older brothers who live in Orlando. “We have a very close relationship,” she says. “I like to spend my free time reading, being active outside, spending time with my friends and family, or taking care of my dog. I have a two year old Australian Shepherd who is my pride and joy. I spend a lot of time taking him to the dog park.”

Shelby shares her favorite Bible Verse:

Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. – Proverbs 31:25

“I remember reading this when I was about 13 years old and it’s something I’ve strived for ever since,” says Shelby. “I want to be covered in God’s strength and trust His plan to the fullest so that I can smile at my future instead of worrying about it. I really want to be a Proverbs 31 kind of girl!”
