Analyzing Literature

Sixth grade ELA students are reading the novel, I Love You, Michael Collins, based on the launch and successful mission of Apollo 11 in 1969. They are participating in mini-projects to help them understand more about that historic mission and the astronauts who were a part of it. They have been analyzing the plot, setting, and characters of the book by rotating through literature circles; responding to the text through questioning strategies, vocabulary exploration, visualizing the scene, identifying the main parts of the plot, and connecting the story to their own lives. This novel study coincides with the 6th grade science unit on space.
