Parent Teacher Conference Day

The Christ School Parent Teacher Conference Day is Monday, August 28. You will receive a link tomorrow from your child’s teacher to sign up for your conference. If you do not receive a link, please contact your child’s teacher.

As an opportunity to Be Family Friendly, TCS is offering REACH Day Camp for students currently enrolled in the REACH program from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm on conference day. REACH families will receive an email this week with camp information and registration specifics. In addition, child care (for TCS TK-8th grade students, only) will be available during your child’s conference time in room 145, located across from the Kindergarten classrooms on the first floor.

The focus of this first Parent-Teacher Conference is Developing Great Learners and our teachers will be using this time to hear from you so they can better understand your child as a learner – areas of strength as well as opportunities for growth and improvement. Based on this conversation and what they have already observed in the classroom, one goal will be created specific to each of the following areas: Knowledge Acquisition, the 4 C’s (skills), and Growth Mindset. These three goals will provide the basis for the Student Learning Plan and will be shared with parents following the conference day. Also, our teachers will take time during Curriculum Night sessions next week to answer questions to help prepare you for your parent-teacher conference.

TCS is Home

You may have noticed a familiar face heading up a new space at TCS. This year, Diane Eakins, who has worked at TCS as a teachers’ assistant, joins the front office staff as administrative assistant.

Diane grew up in Rochester, New York on Lake Ontario. Diane has a close relationship with her family and says, “My mom is one of 16 children, and my family all lives within a 10 mile radius from each other in New York.”

Diane attended a small 2 year college in New York, studying transportation and logistics. A job transfer brought her to Orlando, where she met and married her husband, Ricky. After working at the airport for 8 years and then in sales for Data Security and Disaster Recovery for 4 years, Diane chose to stay home with their two children, Connor and Cara. Connor, TCS class of 2013, and Cara, TCS class of 2014, attended The Weekday School, and then attended the The Christ School from kindergarten through 8th grade. Cara is now a Senior at Boone High School and is dual enrolled at Valencia. Connor will attend UNF this fall.

Diane says, “I started volunteering at The Weekday School, then it developed into working 4 years as a 3 day 3 assistant teacher. I was hired by The Christ School, and worked as a teachers’ assistant for the past 12 years. I am happy to now be working in the front office. My children have thrived in so many ways at TCS and have moved on, but I can’t  leave this wonderful place!  I love God and I love our school!  I am happy to serve our teachers and staff, our families, and most of all our students. This is my big family in Florida within a 10 mile radius.  It is home for me!”

Introducing Thea Nelson, 1st Grade Teacher

The Christ School is happy to introduce Thea Nelson, first grade teacher at TCS. Thea comes to The Christ School from Mt. Paran Christian School in the Atlanta area , where she worked with Aaron Farrant, Head of School. She and her husband Justin, TCS 7th and 8th grade science teacher, have two children: Trevor, who is in 6th grade at TCS, and Aila, who is in 4th grade at TCS. When she is not teaching, Thea enjoys adventures with her family, photography and writing.

Thea grew up in Turlock, California and received her degree in education from California State University Stanislaus with a concentration in Child Development. She has been an education professional for 21 years, teaching preschool-fourth grade, tutoring, and homeschooling.

“Teaching is this unparalleled opportunity to bend down and get eye to eye with a child, to pour out knowledge and blessing, to administer encouragement, to guide toward the wisest choice, and to speak God-given potential and purpose into that child’s heart,” says Thea. “I love getting to know the children and seeing what makes their eyes light up, and to discover how they love to learn.”

Thea continues, “While my family and I are new to TCS, it has been apparent from day one that TCS is special because the people here love God, and they live it out in the way they love others. There is no question that the administration and faculty genuinely care about serving students and families here, and stewarding the daily opportunities we have to do so. We were welcomed warmly from the beginning and truly feel that we’ve joined a family here!”

Carpool Procedures

Now that school has begun, we would like to remind you of our morning and afternoon carpool procedures. Safety is our top priority, and timeliness is also important. Please be sure to follow these important carpool procedures to ensure our students’ safety as they arrive for and leave school.

IMPORTANT
While carpool is underway, cell phone use is strictly prohibited. For the safety of our students, faculty and staff, the use of any electronic communication devices during carpool is not permitted. This includes any type of hands-free operation via bluetooth or other similar device connections. We appreciate your cooperation with this important safety matter.

Morning Carpool

Morning carpool hours are from 7:50 am to  8:10 am under the Angel Wing.

Allen Hall will be open at 7:50 am to welcome students (with the exception of enrolled early care students beginning at 7:00 am). Enter campus from Jackson Street and you will either be directed to go around the playground loop or, if there are few cars, you will be directed to go straight ahead. Wait for patrols or staff to open your car door. Note: Church Street is one-way Eastbound back towards Rosalind Avenue.

Please do not drop off children without parental supervision prior to 7:50 am to wait for school to open. There is no supervision for these children. If you wish to wait with your child under the Angel Wing, there are benches to sit on and wait.

Tips for Morning Carpool – READINESS and SAFETY

  1. Students should be prepared to exit the vehicle upon entering campus.
  2. Children should remain in a safety restraint until a patrol or staff person is ready to accept your child(ren).
  3. Wait for a patrol or staff person to open the vehicle door(s). Use auto-opener only when you see a patrol or staff person ready at the door of the vehicle.
  4. Use of cellphones (in hand or bluetooth) is prohibited during active carpool. This includes after the children have exited the vehicle.
  5. If you choose to not enter the carpool line, please park your vehicle in a legal parking space and walk your student(s), at a minimum, to a safe location with line-of-sight to a school staff person. We ask that you use the parking spaces on Rosalind or Jackson for older children. As a courtesy leave the Church Street parking spaces for our youngest students that may need extra time to unbuckle, etc. or for families dropping off large or heavy items to the school.
  6. Dropping off children in active traffic lanes of the surrounding public streets is not approved by The Christ School. This is a hazard to your children and others around you.

Afternoon Carpool

Grades TK-5 carpool begins at 3:15 pm
Middle School carpool begins at 3:35 pm
Older siblings / older carpool riders:

If you are picking up more than one child, please arrive at the oldest child’s dismissal time. Younger children will be in a specific area awaiting your arrival at the oldest child’s dismissal time.

Please note the following:

  • Every passenger in the vehicle must have a seat and a restraint.
  • Cell phone usage is not permitted in an active carpool line, this includes Bluetooth.
  • Keep in mind that we share this great campus with FPCO and may need to make adjustments to carpool based on significant events in their schedule.
  • Walk ups will enter Allen Hall at the front door and exit via the door on the south side near Clayton Life Center.
  • Parents must complete the Transportation form on RenWeb listing the non-custodial individuals who are permitted to pick-up their child at TCS. If a person is not listed on this form or identified in a note or call from the parents to TCS office, the student will not be released until contact is made and permission given by custodial parent.
  • Please be patient. At the beginning of each school year, the carpool line may move slowly. The length will improve once carpool groups form, and when parents, teachers and students become more familiar with the system. The Christ School encourages families to carpool.
  • Please exercise care. Wait until all students in your carpool have entered or exited your car and the doors are securely closed before you pull forward. Watch for students walking in front of your car. Please remain in your car at all times during carpool and devote your full attention to driving and to the safety of all students and staff.
  • Do not drop children off unless you are parked in a legal parking space. Please do not drop off children in the street or from curbside areas around the campus.
  • Students not picked up from school by 4:00 pm (carpool ends at 3:50 pm) will be sent to the appropriate REACH (aftercare) group to await pickup. Consequently, a REACH drop-in fee of $25 will then be billed to the student’s account.

Lunches at TCS

The Christ School is pleased to provide lunch options each day for busy families! Parents can order lunches from Emmabean Monday – Friday every week. Orders must be placed before 8:00 am the day that the meal is to be delivered.

Beginning Monday, August 14, families can order lunch from Chickfilevery Monday. TK – 5th grade students receive 8 nuggets, and middle school students receive the original chicken sandwich. All Chick-fil-A lunches come with chips. To purchase lunch from Chick-fil-A, please send $5 with your child on Mondays. Exact change or a check for $5, payable to The Christ School, only. Orders must be placed before 9:00 am.

For families utilizing outside vendors for lunch deliveries, please know that lunches must be received at TCS by 11:00 am for Lower School students and 12:00 pm (noon) for Middle School students. Meals must be consumed during the student’s designated lunchtime. We request that drinks not be ordered through the vendor and that all students come to school with a refillable water bottle. Please help us protect our classroom time and manage our transition into Lee Fellowship Hall for lunch by ordering lunches with plenty of time for delivery. Thank you!

Meet Dave Armstrong, After School Academies Coordinator

The Christ School is happy to introduce Dave Armstrong, After School Academies Coordinator. In this role, Dave will lead our REACH and Summer in the City programs.

Dave’s background and experience make him a great fit for his new role at TCS.  He grew up in Michigan City, IN, in a diverse community that taught him a lot about working with people from a variety of backgrounds.  Dave attended a private Christian school, and says, “Attending a private Christian school teaches you a lot about how to make good choices and how to resolve conflict through lessons learned in the Bible. I learned to not just do what is easy, rather, to think, what is the right thing, and how do I do that?”

With a love for sports since childhood, Dave majored in Sports Marketing at Indiana University. After graduation, he moved to Tampa to be an Operations Intern at Houlihan Stadium for the Tampa Sports Authority, where he helped manage Tampa Bay Buccaneer games, USF football games, and Tampa Bay Mutiny soccer games. After completing his internship, he realized what he enjoyed most was sharing his love for sports with students. He was soon hired as the Athletic Director of the Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs in Tampa, where he worked for 18 years. “Working with children in sports programs became my passion,” he says. “There is nothing more rewarding to me than seeing the true, sincere appreciation of a child when you have taught them something new.”

Recently, Dave moved to Orlando to be closer to his family, and worked at the YMCA’s  after school program before being hired this summer as The Christ School’s After School Academies Coordinator.

“I am excited to begin working with the students at REACH,” he says.  I envision REACH to continue to be a place where the students look forward to going. I want it to be a place where our parents know that their children are safe and are in a loving environment that encourages them to be the people God created them to be.”

“In addition to allowing time for homework, I have many activities planned for the students in REACH,” says Dave. “Our activities will be structured and organized, but we still want our kids to be kids. Through these activities, the students will be learning things such as teamwork and making good choices. We will take time to talk about the activities and what we learned from them. They will have a variety of activities to choose from so they are sure to find something they enjoy.”

Dave continues, “I am excited for this opportunity to grow and enhance the REACH and Summer in the City programs. I can’t wait to meet the students here at TCS!”

If any parent is interested in registering their child in REACH.  They can contact Mr. Armstrong at 407-849-1665.

Meet Justin Nelson, TCS 7th & 8th Grade Science Teacher

The Christ School is excited for you to get to know Justin Nelson, 7th &  8th grade Science Teacher. Today began Justin’s 19th year of teaching. Over his career, he has taught middle school math and various high school sciences (biology, anatomy and physiology, marine and environmental science). He says, “I have taught science for 14 years. I love teaching science because it allows us glimpses of God in the world around us. God is revealed through the majesty of His creation and it is exciting to be able to integrate faith into the classroom.”

Originally from the Boston area, Justin attended Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania, and earned his Bachelor of Science in sports medicine.  After college, he taught for two years in New Hampshire, where he met and married Thea, who teaches 1st grade at The Christ School. They lived in California for two years, and moved to the Atlanta area where they lived and worked for the past 14 years, most recently working at Mt. Paran Christian School with Aaron Farrant, Head of School. The Nelsons have two children: Trevor, who is in 6th grade at TCS, and Aila, who is in 4th grade at TCS. Trevor enjoys playing baseball and Aila enjoys dance.

In addition to teaching, Justin has coached middle school and high school soccer for the past 14 years, working with youth recreation teams, middle school boys’ and girls’ soccer, and varsity girls’ soccer teams. He holds an Advanced Regional Coaching Diploma through the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America). We are delighted that in addition to his teaching role at TCS, he will also serve as our Boys’ Soccer Coach.

“I am very excited to be teaching at The Christ School,” Justin says. “I look forward to getting to know the students and their families. I really enjoy engaging with students in a way that fosters creativity, develops character, and provides students with a lens with which to view the world.”

Thank you, TCS!

Amy Guglielmi, TCS class of 2010 and current Auburn University student, recently received an email from one of her professors complimenting Amy on her presentation skills. Amy reflected on her time as a TCS student saying, “Thank you TCS for having me do presentations!” While fellow Auburn students were stressed about doing their presentations, Amy remembered her presentation experience at TCS and felt confident. Amy’s professor writes, “Regarding your presentation, you had a nice, relaxed pace and you appeared very confident. Public speaking must come easy for you!” Amy’s mom, Carrie Beth, added, “Starting with the animal presentations in first grade all the way through to Mrs. Crimmins big speech project in Middle School, Amy has been well prepared for her college presentations.  I just wanted to let you know that we still say “Thank you to The Christ School” every time one of our kids has an oral presentation as they are always prepared to do their best.”

5th Grade Overnight Excursion to Tallahassee

Written and photographed by 5th grade students Eleanor and Katherine Hahn

This year the fifth grade class traveled to Tallahassee for a field trip on April 27-28. After a 5 hour bus trip, we arrived at Mission San Luis. Mission San Luis is a replica of the Apalachee Indian and Spanish community during the time of the 17th century. After having a nice lunch break, we headed towards the old Capitol building, which was restored to its 1902 appearance. After completing a scavenger hunt inside the old Capitol building, we went to the new Capitol building. Inside, we visited the House of Representatives and Senate chambers and the 22nd floor observation deck. We also visited the Supreme Court and got to meet Justice Alan Lawson.

The next day we visited the Tallahassee Museum and took  a guided tour of a 1900’s Florida cracker farm. We also took a self-guided tour through 52 acres that featured animals native to Florida. We then headed to Wakulla Springs State Park for a narrated boat cruise over one of the largest freshwater springs in the world.

This field trip allowed us to see our science and social studies lessons in action. It was a very fast, tiring, and great trip!

Studying the Holocaust

In Language Arts, students are completing  a unit on the Holocaust. After visiting the Holocaust Museum in Maitland last Friday, students completed one final assignment: to write a letter to a school board about why the Holocaust is an important lesson that should be studied in school. Here is a quote from one student’s letter…
“If the Holocaust wasn’t taught in the school setting, where else would children learn about this time and how to prevent it from happening? If we didn’t learn about the Holocaust in school, the people who died in the Holocaust would be gone forever along with their memories. We should want to try and keep these people’s lives and memories alive. For example, in The Nobel Acceptance Speech Delivered by Elie Wiesel, Wiesel includes how, ‘Our lives no longer belong to us alone; they belong to all those who need us desperately.’ The purpose of this excerpt is to inform us that we need to understand the importance of memories and how crucial they are in order to keep those that have passed during the Holocaust alive in our thoughts.”

The Christ School 8th Grade Student Wins Local and District Award

The Christ School celebrates 8th grade student Alejandra Gonzalez-Acosta, who was chosen as the winner of the Barnes & Noble “My Favorite Teacher” contest.  Miss Gonzalez-Acosta was chosen as both the local winner at the Barnes & Noble store on Colonial Drive in Orlando, and as the District Barnes & Noble winner.

The Barnes & Noble “My Favorite Teacher” contest was open to students in middle and high school. Students were invited to write an essay, poem, or thank you letter sharing how a teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire them.

Miss Gonzalez-Acosta wrote an essay on her favorite teacher at The Christ School, Mrs. Tracy Sheldon, who teaches 7th and 8th grade Language Arts. Miss Gonzalez-Acosta and Mrs. Sheldon were recognized during a teacher appreciation reception at the Barnes & Noble store on Colonial Drive.

“I felt compelled to write about Mrs. Sheldon because she treats everyone fairly and always encourages everyone to do their best,” says Miss Gonzalez-Acosta. “She is also very optimistic and easy to talk to. Even though winning feels good, what is more special to me is that I am getting to honor my school and my teacher through one of my passions, writing.”

“Alejandra is a talented writer and a gifted young woman,” says Mrs. Sheldon. “I am confident that she will achieve anything she sets her heart to because she strives for success and never gives up. More than that, she still manages to put others before herself. This is a rare quality in a child her age; a rare quality for any age as a matter of fact.  I am blessed to have received the chance to teach Alejandra and all of my students, and even more blessed to have had the opportunity to watch them grow spiritually and academically.

“It was rewarding to hear that Alejandra feels this way about me. My passion for teaching has paid off in an unusual way. It’s these moments when I realize that I truly make a difference in a child’s life, and that’s what makes teaching such a gift,” Mrs. Sheldon continues.

The Christ School is delighted to celebrate the work and dedication of our students and teachers. We thank Barnes & Noble for honoring the work of teachers, for challenging students, and for giving them an avenue to showcase their passions and talents.

Keeping our Lions Healthy

As we are in the midst of cold and flu season, we would like to share these important reminders from our Parent Handbook: For your child’s sake, as well as the health and safety of the other students, please use good judgment by keeping your child home if they are ill or show symptoms of illness. Students who report to school with a fever above 99.5 degrees will be sent home. Students must be fever free for at least 24 hours (without fever reducing medication, i.e. Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen) before returning to school. Similarly, if a student has had diarrhea and/or vomiting, he/she must be clear of these symptoms at least 24 hours before returning to school.

TCS Alumni Earns Eagle Scout Ranking

The Christ School congratulates Nelson Garris, TCS 8th grade student, who earned the rank of Eagle Scout on January 30.  Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America. His scouting project was to build a 180-ft. walkway at Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) that connects the dormitory to the training pen. Quarterly, CCI brings in the recipients of the dogs to their campus for a two-week training as they are paired up with their animal. Prior to the walkway, the recipients who used wheelchairs had to go a long way around the building and through a parking lot to reach the training pen.  Now they have a straight path, thanks to this new walkway.  Nelson raised just under $2,000 for the materials, organized the building of walkway and coordinated the pouring of the concrete.
