A Note from Michael Noto, Director of Lower School

After growing up outside St. Petersburg, Florida and attending college at Florida State (Go ‘Noles!), I moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, where the Lord placed me on my path as an educator. I was most recently the lower school principal at a private Christian school in Raleigh and have taught in lower, middle and upper school. I am energized by working with students, families and faculty and cannot be more excited about returning to Florida to be a part of The Christ School family and help lead and serve the lower school! I particularly love helping to foster a joy for learning and a joy for the Lord! With me on this journey back to Florida is my lovely wife, Rachel, and my two daughters, Emma and Margaret Anne, who will be TCS Lions this year in 3rd and 6th grades, respectively. Outside of school, I enjoy supporting Florida State athletics, playing soccer and piano and going to the beach…ah, Florida!

TCS 8th grade social studies students enjoyed several valuable experiences last week. Thanks to Judge Greg Tynan, they participated in a mock trial at the Orange County Courthouse. Each student had a role, such as judge, attorney, witness and clerk. There were two juries who heard the same case. Yet, after deliberating in an actual jury room, the juries returned two different verdicts. Following the trial, the students visited the courtroom on the 23rd floor of the courthouse, where major cases are tried.  Later in the week, after months of collaboration and research, ten student teams presented arguments on controversial topics, including sanctuary cities, drilling off the Florida coast and using drones in warfare. A panel of 6 adults posed questions for the teams and offered feedback. The week culminated with the students surveying 166 people in downtown Orlando. The 8th grade students discovered that 15% of those surveyed knew that there are 27 amendments in the Constitution. Less than 50% knew that Congress has the power to declare war. If you can name Mike Pence as Vice-President, then you are with the 65 percent who answered that question correctly.

TCS Alumnae athletes had an amazing 2019 girls lacrosse season at Boone High School.  At the recent awards banquet, Kiyah Costin, Ansley Dalton, Savannah Partlow, Sierra Tagman, Anabel Zimmerman and Kayla Costin were recognized for their leadership on and off the field.

Kiyah received First Team All Metro – Defense and Varsity Athletic awards and was recognized by her peers for her commitment to academics and athletics. Ansley received the Varsity Athletic award and was recognized by her coach as a top midfielder and good person all around. Savannah received MVP Midfielder, Honorable Mention All Metro – Midfield and Varsity Athletic awards and was recognized by her peers for her tenacity and kindness. Sierra received Honorable Mention All Metro- Midfield and Varsity Athletic awards and was recognized by her peers for her speed, scoring and linguistic aptitude. Anabel received the Varsity Athletic award and was recognized by her coach for being a newcomer with immediate impact, leading the midfielders in goals and points. Despite injury, Anabel supported the team through the entire season. Lastly, Kayla received the Golden Mic award for being the home game team announcer and away game stats keeper.

We recently celebrated our middle school athletes at Chapel on Thursday, April 25, by giving all of our athletes “Stars” to recognize them. Mr. Dale Velente, from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, shared his testimony on being commissioned for Christ with the middle school students. Our Chapel concluded with a video showcasing our TCS Stars.

Our middle school sports recognition Chapel will be held on Thursday, April 25, at 8:15 am in the Reformation Chapel.

TCS students have been enjoying cross-curricular lessons from the story The Little Red Hen. In Compass, teacher Mrs. Gibbs asked her students to use their creativity to change or build upon the story in any way they wished and use a shadowbox stage to act out/narrate the story. This presented a new challenge – how will they keep the light for the shadowbox in place to make the characters stand out? Mrs. Gibbs turned to our STEAM students for help! Given this challenge, middle school STEAM students engineered a variety of flashlight holders for the Compass students. After presenting them to Mrs. Gibbs, they listened to her feedback and made necessary adjustments. Their ideas were all very different and ranged from simple to complex, but all solved the problem. Mrs. Gibbs says, “I was so proud of our students’ creative thinking. When students learn to become creative thinkers, they learn to move beyond real or perceived barriers. Problem-solving/inventive thinking skills give students strategies to go beyond these limits to develop novel or unconventional solutions.”

TCS sixth grade World History students have been studying ancient Greece. They explored the Mycenaean period and the use of chariots for Olympic races and ceremonial celebrations. They were given a STEAM challenge to engineer a model of a chariot using a limited supply of materials. The chariots needed to have functioning wheels and the ability to be pulled in a race.  The students rose to the challenge and created chariots of various styles, which they raced in their classroom! After the project was completed, they reflected on what went right, what challenges they faced, and what they would change if they were to do this challenge again. This engaging cross-curricular activity encompassed history, engineering, creativity, and collaboration.

Lower school STEAM classes have begun doing an activity that extends from the kindergarten classroom’s upcoming performance of the classic story, The Little Red Hen. The story provides some interesting STEAM integration opportunities! The Little Red Hen’s world includes the barn, the duck pond, the pig’s mud puddle, the doghouse, the garden, the mill, and the kitchen.  In this first STEAM extension of the story, students created a LEGO model of the Little Red Hen’s world, which focuses on visualization and map reading skills. In the second extension, students will be learning sequencing and computational thinking by following the steps the Little Red Hen goes through from planting the wheat seeds to baking and eating the bread! This is a precursor to coding, and Mrs. Liu will use The Little Red Hen framework to introduce coding to all of our Lower School students.

TCS 4th and 5th grade Enrichment students have been exploring ancient China and the Silk Road. To experience this historical trade route and the difficulties travelers faced along the way, the students played a simulation game in which they were travelers on the Silk Road. The object of the game was to travel from Venice to China and back again and earn the most gold coins. The students earned gold coins by buying and selling valuable items including silk, porcelain, jade, rugs, and tin. They had to strategize a plan to ensure they had enough money for food and camels to cross the desert, and students even had the opportunity to purchase a “paiza,” or golden passport, as protection from the Mongol warriors.

Middle School

TCS 5th grade students experienced first-hand the lessons they have been learning in Social Studies on a 2-day excursion to Tallahassee. There, they explored Florida history and government as they visited Mission San Luis, a replica of the Apalachee Indian and Spanish community in 1703, the old Capitol building, where they participated in a scavenger hunt to explore Florida history, the new Capitol building, where they toured the House of Representatives and Senate Chambers, and the Tallahassee Museum, where they explored a 1900s Florida Cracker farm. Several 5th grade students had the privilege of meeting and hearing from Mary Lynn Magar, a member of the Florida House of Representatives and Speaker Pro Tempore, and some students had the opportunity to meet a high school Senate Page. The students enjoyed a life science experience as they took a boat ride on Wakulla Springs, and saw many manatees, alligators, and turtles, and birds. It was a wonderful learning adventure!

The Christ School track and field team completed their season on Monday at the Greater Orlando Athletic Conference Championship Meet. TCS had 25 students representing our school with many students accomplishing their personal records at the final meet. Anna Wells Burden led the way by finishing in first place in the girls 400 Meters!

Lower School

The clinic will be led by our head cross country coach Terra Townsend, who will introduce running and breathing techniques through fun games and activities. The five-week clinic will begin on Wednesday, April 10 from 3:30 to 4:15 pm and the remaining sessions will be on Thursdays: April 18, 25, May 2 and 9.  The registration fee for the clinic is $75, and will be charged to your FACTS account.  If your child has not already participated in a TCS sport a TCS waiver will need to be completed and returned to Mr. Vais.  Please register online by Monday, April 3.

Kindergarten students enjoyed St. Patrick’s Day themed science experiments. They made predictions about what would happen to an Irish Spring soap bar when they put it in the microwave, observed the bar afterward and discussed how a chemical change had occurred. They had a Skittles taste test and tried to guess what color Skittle they were tasting. They made a rainbow ring and saw how the colors combined to make new colors in varying shades, and poured Lucky Charms cereal onto a table and used straws to try and blow only the marshmallows off the table onto a plate. The students had a fun and memorable time exploring Science! Enjoy photos on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

TCS 8th grade Biblical Worldview students are finishing a unit on politics.They have learned what the Bible says about politics, the Christian’s responsibility as citizens, and looked at examples of Christians in the past who have shaped history by their political involvement. They discovered that they can make a difference in politics even before they can vote. The students each chose an issue they were passionate about and sent hand-written letters to local elected officials about bills that are currently under consideration. They learned that the most important role in America is that of a citizen, so they were excited to use their voice by writing to their elected officials.

TCS offers an open gym for all 5th – 8th grade students interested in playing pick-up basketball. Coach Oz will lead a few warm-up drills and then teams will be chosen. Join us on Wednesdays after school from 3:45 to 4:30 pm on the following dates: March 27, April 3, 10 and 17. There is a fee of $50 that will be charged to your FACTS account. All parents of students in Kindergarten – 4th grades are encouraged to attend an informative session on academic expectations as your child prepares to enter the next grade level. Our teachers will focus on benchmark learning skills critical for success next year, as well as provide highlights of field trips and special events.

Two sessions for each grade level have been scheduled – morning and afternoon. Please select the session that best fits your schedule. Remember, these are rising grade level meetings, so look for the grade your child will be in next year.

Complimentary childcare is available through REACH morning care from 7:30 to 7:50 am, or REACH aftercare from 3:30 to 4:15 pm. Please contact Mrs. Lail with any questions.

TCS lower school spring volleyball will begin when we return from Spring Break. We are blessed to have Coaches Richard Hale and Elizabeth Grady lead our teams. Sixth grade students in our Public Speaking class recently completed 3-minute person-in-a-bag speeches. The students researched renowned and diverse leaders such as Thurgood Marshall, Benazir Bhutto and Madeleine Albright. Students selected items to place in their bag that would prompt their memory when sharing with their class. The items took pressure off of the speaker because the audience’s attention was diverted to the visual. Students also served as evaluators of their peers using a praiser-pointer format, which required listening skills and critical thinking. Evaluators first shared a specific praise, then offered two specific areas for improvement, and ended with one more specific praise.

Last week, our 7th grade students took a field trip to SeaWorld. From research notes they collected on that visit, the students engaged in a debate to help prepare them for the WrAP assessment. “The students incorporated all of the elements of argumentation effectively in their debates, such as supporting claims and rebutting counterclaims with logical reasoning and evidence,” says their Language Arts Teacher Tracy Sheldon. “Afterward, they reflected on the persuasive appeals (logos, pathos, and ethos) and other critical elements that enabled the winning team to perform so well. They discovered that it is crucial to include these elements to effectively communicate and defend positions.”

All TCS students and their families are invited to watch the UCF women’s basketball game this Saturday, March 2, as they celebrate Senior Night. UCF will play Tulane at 2:00 pm.  UCF is offering free tickets to any TCS student and their families.  In order to receive your ticket, you must email Mr. Jim Vais no later than Friday, March 1, at noon.

We are celebrating Discover Engineering Week in STEAM! Today, Andy Stetzinger from Deltamaker (the maker of our 3D printer) came to our campus for a 3D printing teach-in with our students. He discussed how 3D printing incorporates STEAM subjects including robotics, engineering, math, and art. His presentations inspired the students’ creativity as he explained the many things a 3D printer can do, and showed them some great examples of creations made on the printer. Mr. Stetzinger explained that 3D printing is not just used to create toys, but it can be used to print things such as houses, cars, prosthetics, and even a small aircraft! He told the students about how the Space Station has two 3D printers on board, which are used to make parts they need. His presentation opened their minds to possible careers in STEAM and the endless possibilities of the creations we can make on our 3D printer!

The Christ School welcomes Blaire Wonderly as our first grade assistant.  Blaire joined TCS earlier this month and has quickly become a beloved member of our TCS family.

“I was born and raised in Orlando with my two older siblings and we grew up loving all the sunshine, citrus, and beaches. One thing I love to do is travel, but I’m such a Florida girl that I am always happy to return to my home base,” says Blaire.

“Many of my family friends attended TCS in the past and I had always heard them say how great this school is,” says Blaire. “When I started thinking about going into education, TCS came to mind and it became my dream to work here. Then one day God opened a door and I ran right through it! I love coming to work every day and seeing the many ways in which the students grow. They amaze me with their thoughtful creativity and desire to learn new things.”

“My favorite thing about TCS is the Christ-centered atmosphere. It is such a blessing to work in a school where Jesus is really the center of what we do. Whether it is daily chapel, Bible lessons, or just being able to remind the students of God’s love for them, it is such an enriching environment. The staff is incredible at TCS! I have never met such an amazing team and I am honored to be a part of it,” she says.

Since 1984, Walt Disney World Resort has collaborated with local school districts to identify and recognize young people who have demonstrated excellence in their schools and communities. It is time once again to open the application process for the Disney Dreamers and Doers Program.

TCS is pleased to continue recognizing students for the many ways they are engaged in taking positive action to improve their communities, homes, and schools. Students may self-nominate, or may be nominated by a teacher, administrator or peer. In 400 words or less, the submission should answer the following question: What is a positive action you (or a student) have taken to improve the community, home, or school, and what inspired this action?

Although academic achievement and volunuteerism are important, this program is intended to reward unique accomplishments of positive action, compassion, empathy and creativity. Examples of positive actions are included on the chart in the nomination form.

To be considered for selection as The Christ School’s Dreamer and Doer, entries must be submitted to Mrs. Lail in the Academic Office by Thursday, March 7, 2019.

The Soccer Shots spring season will begin in March. An 8-week clinic will take place on the green space immediately following school until 4:05 pm.

• TK and K students will have sessions every Tuesday:  March 5, 12, 26, April 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30
• 1st and 2nd grade students will have sessions every Thursday:  March 7, 14, 28, April 4, 11, 18, 25 & May 2

Space is limited to first come, first served. If your child is interested you can register on the Soccer Shots website.  There is a one time TCS fee of $35 if this is your child’s first time playing a TCS sport. The fee will not be charged if your child has already participated in a sport at TCS this school year. For questions, contact Jim Vais, Director of Athletics and Student Conduct.

The TK – 2nd grade basketball clinic will be held on Thursday, February 14, from 3:30 to 4:00 pm in the gym.

The 3rd – 5th grade girls’ basketball clinic will be held on Tuesday, February 19, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm in the gym.

Middle School

Registration is still open for our middle school track and field team. Coach Paul Katuaskas will lead the team this year and he encourages anyone who is interested to join the team; no prior experience is required. 5th grade students can also participate. Students can choose to participate in the following events: long jump, high jump, discus, shot put, 100 meters, 1600 meters, 4×100 relay, 400 meters, 800 meters, 200 meters, 4×400 meter relay, and the 4×800 meter relay. All athletes must have the following paperwork complete before the first practice: FHSAA physical form, FHSAA consent form and TCS waiver. A $120 fee will be charged in FACTS.  The next practice is Thursday, February 7, from 4:45 to 6:00 pm at the Boone High School track. The remaining practices will be from 4:45 to 6:00 pm at the Boone High School track on the following dates: February 11, 14, 21, 28, March 4, 7, 11 and 28. The track and field meets will be on February 25, March 5, 12, 25 and April 1.

Lower School
The TK – 2nd grade basketball clinic will be held on Thursday, February 7, from 3:30 to 4:00 pm in the gym.

The 3rd – 5th grade girls’ basketball clinic will be held on Tuesday, February 12, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm in the gym.

The next Spirit Day is Thursday, February 21.  Our FCA student leaders will be recognizing our middle school track and field team, TK-2nd grade basketball & our 3^rd, 4^th, and 5^th grade girls’ basketball teams.
