Active Students Means Active Learning

It’s no secret that hands-on activities and games are valuable teaching tools.   Not only are activities a great way to introduce new concepts to younger students; research indicates that they are helpful for all grade levels and in a variety of subjects to engage all students and bring lessons to life.

Beginning in kindergarten, hands-on activities are expected teaching tools. “My students are very much ‘concrete learners,’” says Janice Lewis, Kindergarten Teacher at The Christ School.  “Kindergarten students do not think in abstract terms rather, they take objects, people, and concepts at face value.” Mrs. Lewis continues, “Younger students learn by doing, so most all of our lessons involve hands-on activities.  When students create and have the freedom to experiment while creating, it helps them understand and absorb the concept.”

In kindergarten, hands-on lessons are used in every subject.  Mrs. Lewis says, “For math, we play group games using a website called ixl. We also watch math videos that present visuals of the concept we are presenting, and then introduce a manipulative that goes with each lesson. Every day, we use cubes, counters, or other objects to help reinforce the concept they are learning.  To reinforce language skills, the students use manipulatives such as blocks that snap together with rhyming words, or pictures that have different ending sounds.” Science involves even more hands-on learning.  Students conduct experiments that help them remember the process and the outcomes.  “When we learn about Johnny Appleseed,” says Mrs. Lewis, “we taste different types of apples and make a graph that depicts which is their favorite. This helps with science and reinforces math skills.” To enhance the social studies lesson, the students make a Johnny Appleseed puppet, to show what he may have worn, what he did, and what he was like.

“We also play a lot of games,” Mrs. Lewis continues. “If you do a lesson a certain way, and call it game, students are more interested in participating, especially if each person gets a turn, and it keeps moving at what we call a ‘perky pace.’ We move pretty fast so the students remain engaged.”

The Christ School’s Compass class, a program distinctive to TCS, provides students of all grade levels with many opportunities to actively practice and enhance critical thinking skills through hands-on activities and games.  Meredith Gibbs, Compass teacher, explains.  “Games help students develop essential skills such as critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, reasoning, and the importance of teamwork.  We play a variety of games in Compass to develop different skills.  Playing challenging games allows us to address the most difficult content in a light and engaging way. They allow the students to take risks that they wouldn’t necessarily take.  In their daily classroom, a student may be hesitant to try, but when it’s called a game, it’s okay to take a risk.  It’s not called math, or science.  You’re not calling it anything but a game.  I truly love to hear students encouraging each other through the hardest parts and celebrating the smallest victories.  Even more, everyone is engaged!  Students engage with classmates that they may not normally engage with, learn background knowledge about each other, and learn skills from one another.  It helps build social interaction. They can sit or stand and sometimes move about the room.  The students are moving, standing, competing, laughing, and cheering each other on.”

Mrs. Gibbs continues, “I love to use hands-on activities because I can teach a concept and the students get to experience the concept through an experiment with actual, physical objects.  Often, I will describe what I want the students to do and ask them to figure out the activity by themselves.  Doing a lesson without a demonstration can be even more impactful, and puts their critical thinking skills to work as they problem solve with each other. Many times, the students are required to explain what they are building or doing to a classmate, so they build language skills at the same time.”

As students travel through middle school, and lessons become more advanced, hands-on lessons keep them interested and excited about new challenges.  TJ Ross, who teaches 7th and 8th grade math and robotics at TCS, uses hands-on activities to introduce lessons that may be difficult to conceptualize.

“In 7th grade math, we are learning how to divide fractions,” says Mr. Ross. “To help the students understand the concept, we use paper plates and scissors, and relate the lesson to something they love – pizza.  For this lesson, each plate represented a pizza.  We divided the two pizzas into quarters, resulting in 8 pieces of pizza.  This helps introduce fractions by giving them a visual to understand the problem: 2 ÷ 1/4.  Rather than memorizing procedures with no context, the students develop an understanding of how and why the fractions divide the way they do through activities.

“In pre algebra, I introduce abstract concepts. Using hands-on lessons helps put some practicality into the abstraction,” Mr. Ross says. “To introduce algebraic thinking, I use a scale; the type that balances on both sides. Thinking of equations as a scale is a very literal way to present them. In algebra, whatever you do to one side of the equation, you do to the other side to keep it balanced.  One side of the scale, or equation, has a known weight. The other side has two or more of the same object with an unknown weight. The other side needs to balance, so our task is to determine the unknown. To do this, we try to get the one unknown item all by itself by dividing, subtracting, or adding. This hands-on activity helps them relate to how algebra works.  Our lessons are really fun. We try all sorts of items in the classroom, such as iPads, staplers, and tape dispensers.  We grab enough items to balance the scale.   Everyone is engaged and eager to take part.”

To help understand statistics, Mr. Ross’ students use manipulatives such as spinners and dice. “To understand probabilities, we play adventure games with dice,” he says.  “We also play basic strategy games based upon the statistical probability of certain numbers coming up. For example, we use two spinners.  One has 6 divisions, and one has 12 divisions, both labeled by numbers. The students must come up with a rule, for example, when this occurs I win, when that occurs you win.  First, the rule has to be fair. Then, they have to make a rule that puts one student at an advantage, and one that puts their opponent at an advantage.  We ask, ‘What are my odds of winning here?’  ‘Is this fair?’  They can make up a rule that appears fair, but in reality it’s not (for example, if we tie, that means I win).”

“Using manipulatives and incorporating games helps develop higher level thinking.  They move the students forward with understanding, and allow them to actively apply their learning to a real task,” says Mr. Ross.

In every classroom, teachers at The Christ School create experiences that reinforce lessons, foster curiosity, critical thinking, and the development of new ways to solve problems. Students are excited to come to school each day to engage, explore, and take part in new discoveries!

Souper Bowl Service Project

The Christ School Student Ambassadors are honored to host the Christian Service Center’s Souper Bowl Service Project on Friday, February 3. As many of us gather at parties to eat and watch the best teams in the NFL play for the Super Bowl, thousands across Central Florida will instead be worrying about how to provide food for their families. The Christ School Student Ambassadors have decided to act and be a part of the solution. Each TCS student is asked to bring one (or more) can(s) of soup, vegetables, etc. to chapel on Friday, February 3. Each can will be placed on the chancel steps and prayed over as we ask our Lord to bless and multiply our offerings. All food collected is distributed through Family & Emergency Services (FES), Daily Bread, and the Love Pantry. TCS is humbled to serve alongside these great organizations and the Student Ambassadors ask for your help and generosity as we work together to feed those less fortunate. Remember – BOGO – Buy one, Give one! Thank you very much!

Collaborative Self Portrait Mural

This month, The Christ School Art Program is highlighting the work of our kindergarten classes, who created a Collaborative Self Portrait Mural.

To begin their project, the students looked at themselves in a portrait mirror. As a class, the students practiced drawing a self portrait while receiving a guided lesson from TCS art teacher, Mrs. Smith. They learned that a traditional portrait only includes the subject from the shoulders up.

The students discussed what shapes work best for which features and where the features should be placed in relation to one another. The students noticed that each of us have different skin tones, hair color and eye color.

When each student was ready, they began their final sketch. The sketches were done in pencil and then transferred onto the final paper using permanent markers. Students were encouraged to include an image which had meaning to them in the background.

Students used both observational drawing skills as well as a guided lesson from Mrs. Smith. Observational drawing uses the artist’s powers of observation by looking at an image and drawing what the artists sees. This skill will continue to be developed throughout an artist’s lifetime.

Completed portraits were signed by each student artist and mounted together on one canvas to show the collaborative skills of the entire class. Our mural is on display in The Christ School lobby.  We hope you enjoy these wonderful portraits!

Colorful Kitty Portraits

Beginning this month, the TCS Art Program will highlight the collaborative work of our talented students each month.  The featured exhibit for October comes from Mrs. Dodgion’s Transitional Kindergarten class.

For this project, titled Colorful Kitty Portraits, the students looked at photographs of cats. After deciding which shapes would be best to use for each feature, the students began to compose their portraits. They learned that a traditional portrait only includes the subject from the shoulders up.

To draw their projects, the students used both observational drawing skills as well as a guided lesson from Mrs. Smith, TCS art teacher. Observational drawing uses the artist’s powers of observation by looking at an image and drawing what the artists sees. This skill will continue to develop throughout an artist’s lifetime.

After composing a sketch in pencil, the students retraced the lines they wanted to keep in permanent marker. After a discussion of warm and cool colors, each artist colored their kitty in a color scheme of warm and cool colors. This project was composed of pencil, permanent markers and crayons.

Completed portraits were signed by each artist and mounted together on one canvas to show the collaborative skills of the entire class. We hope you enjoy looking at these adorable portraits as much as the students enjoyed creating them!

TCS Families – We Need You!

Believe it or not, the 2017-18 admission season is upon us and families in the greater Orlando area are discerning who will be their educational partner for their children next year. Whether they have a kindergarten student, lower school or middle school child, the best influence on their choice is YOU! Please help us share The Christ School mission with your friends, neighbors, co-workers and fellow church worshipers by making sure to have a TCS magnet on your car and a TCS yard sign in your front (and back) yards, if allowed. Please share our social media event invitations along with this Weekly newsletter with your friends. TCS is gearing up for our Kindergarten Chats and Open Houses and we need YOU to help us spread the word. Thank you to the Deese family, the Ravenscroft family, the Bodine family, the Hale family, the Gilbert family, the Ricchi family, the Braland family, the Thomas family, the Featherman family, the Stewart family and the Burden family who have referred families to The Christ School for the 2017-18 school year. We are honored to have your referral!  TCS families … We Need You! … Please share the news of TCS and help us grow our community for His kingdom.

Buildings and Symmetry

First grade students are becoming architects. Using their classroom SMARTboard, students explored famous buildings around the world and discussed the shapes they saw in the buildings. The students first thought that rectangular and square shaped buildings would be the strongest. Looking at the pyramids, they learned that a building’s strength has more to do with symmetry. Through their explorations, the students decided that a sturdy building has a lot to do with building materials and symmetry. To test their discovery, they went on a Google Expedition and visited the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa.  They looked for symmetry, building materials and shapes.  They explored more buildings on their Google Expedition, looking for shapes and symmetry. Their lesson concluded as they designed their own symmetrical building. Architecture 101 at TCS!

Beginning on October 25, students in 2nd and 3rd grades will have the opportunity to participate in a small group focused on enhancing their emotional intelligence. The group will be led by TCS school counselor, Sharon Darin, and is made possible by the initial grant TCS received from The Maclellan Family Foundation’s Christian Education Charitable Trust (CECT). Register your child here. Students will meet for 45 minutes once a week for six weeks to improve their listening, communicating and problem solving skills through role-playing and hands-on activities. The skills learned in the group will help with classroom, playground and home interactions.

Please note: space is limited to ten students per session. This opportunity will be offered quarterly this year. Once capacity is reached, students will be placed on a wait list and offered preference for the following quarter.

3D Art Sculptures

Middle School 3D Art elective students were introduced to the concept of Installation Art, or art which is placed or “installed” into an environment. Students viewed the work of artist Mark Jenkins, who creates many pieces of installation art which he often places around his hometown of Washington D.C. One of the mediums, or sculptural materials, favored by Jenkins is packing tape. Jenkins uses this medium to wrap figures after which the wrapped tape is cut off of the model. The result is a semi-clear packing tape form of the original model. These figures are placed in strange places throughout the city, often leaving onlookers with a sense of wonder or confusion.

3D Art students are using the work of Jenkins as inspiration for their own pieces. Working in pairs, each student will use a classmate as the model for their sculpture. Predetermined poses are held by the model as they are wrapped in tape. These taped sections are then cut off and reassembled to create an entire figure. Keep an eye out around the TCS campus for these interesting pieces of art!

Sentence Diagramming – You’re Going to Hollywood!

Sixth grade students in Mrs. Sheldon’s Writing Wheel are developing their understanding of language through the art of sentence diagramming. Not only do they learn where to place a word on the diagram, but they also process the purpose of each word and its function within the sentence. Through the creativity of the students, this fun activity became a friendly competition that resembled “America’s Got Talent.” Students nominated themselves as judges and determined if the “performer” could move forward or not.  Several performers received the Golden Buzzer for excellence. “It was wonderful to see the students engage in their learning and they all asked when we could practice some more,” says Mrs. Sheldon.  “This is the reward of teaching; I’m truly blessed!”

National Junior Honor Society

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) honors academically talented students who also demonstrate five key qualities held in high esteem by NJHS – Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character, and Citizenship. Last Thursday, current NJHS members and inductees were celebrated in the treasured tradition of the Lighting of the Candles during the NJHS Induction Ceremony. It was a wonderful event that recognized all of the members in The Christ School’s Chapter. The group is sponsored by TCS 7th and 8th grade language arts teacher Tracy Sheldon, who says, “I look forward to leading the students this year as we work together to create different service projects that will help not only our school, but also those in the community.”  Members will elect NJHS Officers next week.

The Gathering Partners with TCS

The Christ School is delighted to partner with The Gathering, an established Christian men’s organization, to provide a service and leadership opportunity for our middle school boys. Ten different TCS middle school boys will be invited to attend The Gathering’s monthly luncheons. In addition to lunch, the meeting features a message delivered by a reknown guest speaker. The Christ School students will serve the meal and then sit and eat lunch with the men. This event provides TCS students the opportunity to demonstrate service and leadership as they engage with male role models who are Christian leaders in their work place. Prior to the first meeting, which took place on September 13, Brett Kreider, Director of The Gathering Orlando, spoke to our middle school boys during their Advisory meeting. He outlined three important traits he has used with his own children that will also benefit our young men in their journey to adulthood, and provided specific tips on how best to interact with others.

  • Be Respectful: When addressing an adult, look them in the eyes.
  • Be Confident: Introduce yourself with a firm handshake.
  • Be Curious: Ask questions – everyone likes to talk about themselves and asking questions breaks down barriers.

The meeting was a wonderful kick-off to this partnership and service opportunity with The Gathering. The Christ School looks forward to a successful year watching these young men grow and mature in all aspects of their life, but especially in their walk with Christ.
