Soup for Science

What part of a plant are you eating when you enjoy a tasty carrot? Second grade students are studying botany and learning about plant identification. They are being introduced to the parts of plants and the functions of those parts. Vegetables were the key for a reading, math, health, and fabulous science lesson on the Parts of the Plant We Eat. They had a lot of fun preparing vegetables for soup and considering where each one grew on the plant. The vegetable soup they cooked was a tasty reminder of the gifts God provides and an exciting science lesson.

Middle School Science Fair

Congratulations to our Middle School Science Fair Winners! Many interesting and thoughtful projects were on display this year.  Seventh grade winners are: 1st place: Gabi Fatigati, 2nd place: Carrie Formella, 3rd place: Savannah Partlow, and 4th place Addie Marlett. Eighth grade winners are: 1st place: Karly Evans, 2nd place: Logan Kimble, 3rd place: Gracie Blastic, and 4th place: Nicholas Millard.  Kudos to Best in Show winner Ajay Brooks for his project, “Mighty Minerals,” in which he tested different soils to see if the higher mineral content produced more electrical conductivity.

Learning About Elections

Mrs. Lasseter’s K-2 students are learning about elections. They are practicing their lessons as they vote for their favorite Florida Reading Association picture book. During the year, they heard eight specially selected picture books. This week, they are voting in the state election for the Children’s Book Award, helping choose the winning book! As part of their lesson, they discussed how to vote and watched a short video about elections. For the election, they each receive a ballot with the eight “candidates” on it. They then choose their favorite story, and deposit their ballot it in the ballot box.

Talking to Strangers

TCS 8th grade students recently discovered that sometimes its okay to talk to strangers. The students conducted Man-on-the-Street interviews with individuals they encountered downtown. Four civics questions were posed. This activity was a review of Social Studies content the students learned earlier in the year, as well as a unique way to sharpen their social skills and engage in our downtown community.

The questions and percentage of correct answers are listed below. As for the answers, you’ll have to ask a TCS 8th grade student.

1.   After the President and Vice-President who is next in the line of succession? In other words, if the President and Vice-President were to die at the same time, who would become president?   42% correct

2.   Who is the current Speaker of the House?   44% correct

3.    According to the Constitution, who has the power to declare war?     42% correct

4.     Name Florida’s two U.S. Senators.  41% correct

Art, Symmetry, and History

Middle school art students are studying mandalas. Mandalas, used in many types of religious art, employ the use of radial symmetry, where all sides of a circular image are the same if it is divided along its axis. In Christian art, mandalas are often used in stained glass windows like the rose windows found in Gothic architecture. The students developed a design that would be 1/4 of their image. They then transferred it on to a linoleum block. Using carving tools, they carved a block print. The blocks were inked and used to print their complete mandalas.

Combining Forces

Technology and COMPASS students are combining talent and technology for creative projects. They are using a green screen (“Chroma key”) to allow them to move out of the TCS campus into other virtual environments with both video and photos. The TCS News students in technology class are doing much of what modern television studios do with the green screen.  Look for video soon featuring a student reporting “live” from an Orlando Magic game.  Mrs. Gibbs’ enrichment students are using this project to travel all over the world, and they will have photos to prove it!

Discovering Tools

To prepare our kindergarten students for their visit to Miller’s Hardware, Mr. Coryell gave a short demonstration on different types of tools and fasteners that you might see in a hardware store.  Students explored various types of nails, screws, nuts and bolts.  Mr. Coryell also showed how a hammer is used to pound in nails and remove them by becoming a lever.  Screws and bolts were described as two simple machines put together (an axle and a wedge), and screwdrivers and wrenches were demonstrated to show how they are used to tighten or loosen them.  The highlight was the cordless drill and impact driver!

Cultivating Leaders

The 7th grade Citizenship class engaged in a project entitled “H20 2GO.” The students first researched critical water shortages. They then designed informative flyers about the water crisis in different regions of the world. These flyers also included suggestions of ways we can conserve water. The students distributed the flyers downtown during a water awareness walk. Seeking to empathize with women and children around the world who must walk miles on a daily basis to get fresh water, the students each carried two gallons of water during the walk. After completion of the H20 2GO walk, the gallons of water were donated to a local food bank.

Good Citizens and Inspiring Leaders

Students on our 7th grade Citizenship course have been exploring responsible and compassionate citizenship within the context of school, national and global issues. On the school level, students identified an area that they wanted to improve. Currently, the items placed in recycling bins at TCS are discarded rather than recycled. Inspired by the vision of Marilyn Waldrop, Marilyn and her teammates Emily Harrison and Stephanie Towle have initiated a TCS recycling program. They have committed to collecting the recycling weekly from each classroom. They will then place the items in their home recycling bins. The plan is simple, but the payoff is enormous not only in promoting good stewardship, but also in encouraging students to be positive change agents within their school.

Spirit Bible Study

TCS women and friends are invited for seven weeks of fellowship as we learn and apply to our lives the word of God through the study “Wonderstruck: Awaken to the Nearness of God” by Margaret Feinberg. Join us Wednesday evenings in the TCS Media Center from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. beginning February 25.  Expense of study is $12.95 (participant’s guide).  We regret that childcare is not available.

For more information or to register, please contact Jen Bostedo  by Monday, February 23.

“Wonderstruck: Awaken to the Nearness of God” by Margaret Feinberg is a 7-session Bible study filmed in the spectacular Canadian rockies that will remind you what it means to awaken to wonder—every day. Do you ever feel like you’re going through the motions of faith? Sometimes we do and say the right things, but our hearts are far from God. We lose our sense of holy awe. In Wonderstruck, Margaret Feinberg invites you to toss back the covers, climb out of bed, and drink in the fullness of life God intended.

You will learn how to:

  • Develop a renewed passion for God
  • Identify what’s holding you back in prayer
  • Find extraordinary moments on ordinary days
  • Discover peace in knowing you’re wildly loved
  • Recognize the presence of God in the midst of your routine

Building Memory

Compass students throughout all grade levels are taking part in an educational game geared to develop and nurture memory skills, concentration, and imagination.  To play the game, the students, working in groups, take turns looking at visually-stimulating images on game cards that vary in difficulty according to grade level.  When the timer runs out, they are asked a series of questions about the images- What color is the girl’s hat?  What is the clown holding in his hand?  Is the cat looking at the sky or the chicken?  etc.  The object is to see how much they can recall.  Group participation skills are nurtured through this activity in addition to incorporating reasoning skills.  As a side bar, the students are exposed to wonderful vintage prints, album covers, and classic story covers.

Lessons in History

Fifth grade students had a special presentation in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Susan Schardt grew up in Orlando during segregated times, and offered the students a first-hand account on what Orlando was like before the Civil Rights movement. Mrs. Schardt discussed the differences between the white schools and African American schools, the jobs available to African Americans during that time, and shared details about everyday life. She recounted how there were separate water fountains and bathrooms in downtown Orlando stores, and the negative reaction white college students had to Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Programming Robots

Students in Mr. Ross’ robotics class are working on programming a “macro” that interacts with their Sphero programmable robot.  Upon hitting play with their macro, the Sphero will execute the programmed commands. The students are able to adjust the speed, color, heading, and various other attributes of the robot in order to complete the desired task.  After learning how to program with Sphero, the class will be moving into programming their Sphero through obstacle courses, adding engineering components such as building a bridge with limited materials for their Sphero to cross, and more.

Business Sense

The fifth grade students applied their newly-learned math skills to create their own stores. They produced a business proposal that included products, prices, and marketing strategies. On December 18, they opened their stores and welcomed 2nd and 3rd grade friends as their very first customers. Throughout the experience, the students learned about supply and demand and the importance of good customer service. At the conclusion of the project, the students reflected on their experience and thought about specific improvements that can be made to allow their business to thrive. They look forward to implementing these improvements at their “Spring Sale.” There are some future entrepreneurs in this group!

MATHCOUNTS

The MATHCOUNTS middle school competition team and the Math Video Challenge team used their knowledge about percentages, measures of central tendency, and predicting calculations as they competed in the sport of bowling.  As they bowled, the students practiced measuring outcomes for different scoring scenarios, inferred which measure of central tendency would be most important in a game of bowling, and calculated percentages of strikes for their individual and team scores. By doing this, the MATHCOUNTS team experienced the type of problem solving scenarios they will face in their January competition. The Math Video Challenge students developed great  ideas for their video to explain how to solve algebraic problems.

Acceleration Comes Alive in Science Class

Motion, acceleration and Newton have been the topics of study in 8th grade Physical Science. The students have been studying how Newton’s Laws of Motion create the sensations of feeling heavy or weightless. Students learned how to calculate the acceleration and speed of a roller coaster by applying Newton’s Laws of Motion. This classroom lesson came to life for the students when they visited Busch Gardens’ Physics Day. Each year, Busch Gardens sets aside two days for physics students to have exclusive park time, engage in interactive physics stations located around the park, participate in a live physics interactive show and learn from accelerators mounted on select rides.
