Disney Dreamers & Doers

Since 1984, Walt Disney World Resort has collaborated with local school districts to identify and recognize young people who have demonstrated excellence in their schools and communities. It is time once again to open the application process for the Disney Dreamers and Doers Program.

TCS is pleased to continue recognizing students for the many ways they are engaged in taking positive action to improve their communities, homes, and schools. Students may self-nominate, or may be nominated by a teacher, administrator or peer. In 400 words or less, the submission should answer the following question: What is a positive action you (or a student) have taken to improve the community, home, or school, and what inspired this action?

Although academic achievement and volunuteerism are important, this program is intended to reward unique accomplishments of positive action, compassion, empathy and creativity. Examples of positive actions are included on the chart in the nomination form.

To be considered for selection as The Christ School’s Dreamer and Doer, entries must be submitted to Mrs. Lail in the Academic Office by Thursday, March 7, 2019.

We look forward to hearing about the many students who are having a positive impact on our school and community!

Courage and Persecution

The 8th grade Bible students have been learning about the persecution of Christians around the world. In class, they had the privilege of hearing from a missionary to India who had recently experienced persecution because of his faith. Matthew Johnson (pseudonym) and his family started a church in a large city in southern India four years ago. While their church is flourishing, they have experienced resistance and hardship including Matthew being separated from his family, deported to Singapore for 6 weeks and told to cease all ministry activity. The students had thoughtful questions for Mr. Johnson, and were surprised to learn about the persecution Indian Christians face when they decide to follow Jesus, such as physical violence and being disowned by their families. This unit has given the students a glimpse of what it’s like to be a Christian in other parts of the world and has helped them develop a new appreciation of the religious freedoms we often take for granted in the United States.

TCS Enrollment Anniversary

Friday, February 15, is The Christ School’s Enrollment Anniversary date. Your child(ren) will automatically be enrolled for the 2019-20 school year and no deposit is required. If you do not plan for your child(ren) to attend The Christ School in 2019-20, parents must notify the school in writing no later than February 15. It is very important for families to understand the terms of the continuous enrollment contract and that if a family makes a decision not to return to TCS after February 15, 100% of the tuition for the upcoming school year must be paid.

If you will be applying for financial assistance, please note that you must complete a new FACTS Grant & Aid application each year. The deadline for submitting your application for the next school year is the same date as the school’s enrollment anniversary date – February 15. Assistance offers will be distributed by the end of March. FACTS Grant & Aid applicants who cannot accept their offer of assistance will have the option to be released from the terms of their Enrollment Contract after the anniversary date. For questions, contact Bill Herlong, Director of Operations.

Making Connections in Compass

One of the most valuable life skills we need is making connections with each other. The more “techie” we become, the more important it is for students to learn the art of building connections. The activities presented in our current unit of study in Compass, Dramatic Play, rely directly on connecting with classmates. Challenges will require teamwork and apply both verbal and physical communication.  Students will build their creative thinking skills by being performers and analyzing and interpreting performances.  These activities will cause the imagination to stretch, their minds to open, and will require the willingness to give sincere effort while also supporting all performers’ work.  Be on the lookout for Class Dojo shorts showing some of our dramatic play challenges!

Student Support Spotlight, by Alissa Plaisance – December 19

A special note from the Student Support Center (SSC) teachers: As we enter the Christmas vacation and New Year, we want to express our appreciation for you – the families of our students involved in the SSC. Working in small groups with students allows for a special bond to develop and for a trust element that opens students to be willing to work hard on the areas of school that give them the most challenge. That trust is taken very seriously by your child’s teachers and tutors. Seeing the growth and improvement each child experiences as a result of the efforts put in by the members of our team is another blessing. Your children are loved on and prayed over by their teachers! We hope you can take a moment from your busy schedules to sit back and reflect on how your child has grown and improved this year.

There are just a couple of weeks until our Christmas break and family celebrations! This is a great opportunity to enjoy family time together and connect with your children. Volunteering together can be a wonderful bonding activity. If you have ever attended the Orlando Citrus Parade and wondered, “How do they build those floats?” I have an idea for you. Why not volunteer with your family to build one! The Orlando Citrus Parade is looking for families (ages 10 and up) to help attach 100,000 pieces of citrus to this year’s floats! They will be building the floats December 26-28 at the Orange County Convention Center. No experience is necessary! Not the right fit? Here are other ways you can volunteer!

Advertising Awareness

Mrs. Sheldon’s 7th-grade students are learning how advertising affects their lives and the choices they make. After learning about the techniques used by advertisers, such as bandwagon, avant-garde, and testimonials, students analyzed online and print ads to determine what techniques were used and their effectiveness. The students are beginning to realize that they are infiltrated by ads every day, which sometimes determines their purchasing choices, no matter if they need the product or not. They are also learning that they have a powerful influence on what their parents buy, so parents beware! It has been a valuable, eye-opening unit so far!

Student Support Spotlight, by Alissa Plaisance – November 28

Growing up, I was fortunate to live close to a fabulous Children’s Art Museum which encouraged lots of hands-on creation activities and classes. Visiting this artsy wonderland was kinesthetic heaven for me. Yesterday I was in our STEAM lab looking at the colorful bins of random supplies and it triggered memories of my time at the museum. I love to watch the children tinkering and creating in there! It made me think about the benefits of children creating things versus consuming. Children get lots of opportunities to consume with media and toys but how often do we just gather a bunch of “loose parts” and say CREATE?! Here is an article that lists some ideas and reasons why loose parts are the best parts to spark creativity and curiosity in children!

Do you need a few last minute ideas for Thanksgiving? Here’s some advice from Mrs. Schwalk’s first grade students: “If I was in Charge of Thanksgiving…

I would get all the ingredients from Publix. It would cost maybe $132 dollars-that’s how much it costs my mom.  Then, I would start cooking! I would take off the bag from the turkey, then I would put it in a giant bowl and put the stuffing in it and bake it for 10-13 minutes.  I would take it out and let it cool for 10 minutes. Then, I would make the blueberry pie-my favorite. I would serve all of this with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes with gravy and green beans.  I might also use corn too! – Quinn

I would go to Publix and go to the meat aisle-aisle 8.  I would get a turkey for $12. Then, I would go back home and make the turkey by putting it in the oven for 20 minutes.  I would cut it and put it on everyone’s plate. I would put plates on the table and give everyone a plate. We would say the prayer and eat it.  I would just have turkey with jelly for dessert. – Kinley

I would make my sister drive me to the market.  I would make her help me find the turkey and pay for it with my $50 dollar bill.  After we got home, I would put the turkey in a medium hot oven for 30 minutes. Then, I would cut it and eat it.  I would also make green beans, strawberries, cheese and ice cream, cupcakes and cake for dessert. – Ali

If we had chicken in the fridge, we would just have that.  I would heat it up in the oven for probably 100 seconds. I would put some salt and a little pepper on it.  After that, I would make my special recipe of potatoes. I would cut the potatoes and put oil on them. I would also put some seasoning on the potatoes.  I would also make cut up tomatoes with vinegar and pepper and mix it up. We would also have salad. We would eat that for Thanksgiving! -Emily

I would get a bunch of pumpkin pies and apple pies and a great big turkey from Publix.  I have $20 to pay for this-actually I have way more money than this. I would use the oven at 100 degrees and cook it for 10 minutes.  I would serve it on a plate and have a pie cutter for the pie. I might also bring blueberry cobbler and some of my dad’s pork. – Walter

I would go in the woods with a gun and shoot a turkey.  Then, I would take it home and put it in the oven. The oven would be a little hot and I would leave it in for 5 minutes.  After that, I would eat it. I would eat it with corn, mashed potatoes, broccoli and Pepsi. – Daniel

I would go buy cooking gloves then I would try to see if there was some turkeys at the store.  If I had enough money, like $5, I would buy it. Then, I would take the turkey home and I would open it because it’s usually in a bag.  I would look in a cookbook to see how to make it. I would put it in the oven for a couple of hours. Then, I would put it on little trays and put them on tables.  I would make carrots, rice and a turkey cake for dessert. – Ava

I would go to Publix and buy a turkey if they had one.  It would cost $10. I would bring it home and cook it. I would cook it in the oven for 20 minutes.  The oven would be really hot. When it’s done, I would take it out and let it cool down for 6 minutes.  I would get mint jelly to go with it and some rolls. I would have a cake for dessert.- Mariana

I would bake cupcakes, cookies and turkey.  For the turkey, I would put it in the oven for 30 minutes.  The oven would be 200 degrees. There would also be mac and cheese and that’s all. – Kaiden

I would go to Publix and I would buy a turkey for $55 dollars.  I would get some BBQ sauce for $5. I need one more thing-Coke. Then, I will go home and cook the turkey in the smoker for probably 25 minutes.  Then, I would put fake grass around it and I’ll put the BBQ sauce in a bowl and invite my friends over. Then, we’ll feast, and feast, and feast! – Dylan

I would get a turkey from the store.  It would cost $11. I would cook it at home on the stove.  The stove would be 10 degrees and I would cook it for 10 minutes.  After I took it out, I would cut it for everyone. I would have salad and some desserts like maybe cake.  – Maddie

I would go to Publix and get the things I needed.  Then, at home, I would make dinner. I would make turkey by putting it in the oven for 10 minutes.  I would make broccoli to go with it. I would make pumpkin pie by getting a pie at the store and heat it up. I would take the all of it out of the oven and serve it to my family. – Molly

I would go to Trader’s Joes and buy some turkey for hopefully just $20 because that’s all I have.  Then, I would buy some marinade. I would take it home and cook it on my dad’s Green Egg. I would put marinade on it and cook it for 2 days at 2000 degrees.  Then, let it cool for 20 hours. I would need to put more herbs on it. I would cut it and sit it on a plate until the rest of my family comes. While I am waiting, I would cook the dessert-pecan pie. -Isaac

I would go hunting for a turkey.  Then, I’ll have to put it in the oven for 20 minutes.  The oven would be 20 degrees. I would make the turkey sweeter and spicy with seasoning.  I would serve it with brownies, cranberry sauce and strawberries.” – Brooks

Does the thought of doing math homework make you and your child stressed? If so, this week’s article is for you! When children are feeling anxious or lack confidence, it can be even harder for them to learn a new concept. Math time can be stressful if it is not your child’s favorite subject (yet)- but there are ways to ease the stress!

It can help to connect new math concepts with ones that your child already understands. When you bring in math concepts they already get, it can reduce or even remove roadblocks in their working memory. Plus research shows that when kids feel successful, they’re more likely to take risks and try something more challenging. Here is a great idea for getting “warmed up” to do homework.

First Grade Fun

TCS first grade students get an extra smile and warm welcome to school each day from Betty Perez, our first grade assistant. “Working at TCS is fun!” says Betty. “My role as a teacher’s assistant is full of variety.  I enjoy being a resource and help in every way I can. My favorite thing about working at The Christ School is being able to see first-hand how the teachers take their time to nurture, teach valuable lessons and focus on God as the center of everything.  I love seeing the children enjoying their lessons and how they actively participate.”

Betty was born in the city of Mayaguez, located on the West Coast in Puerto Rico.  “I moved to Rochester, New York, when I was 16 years old,” says Betty.  “In Rochester, I met my husband, who was my high school sweetheart. Together, we have two wonderful children, who are both grown.  My first born, Michelle, is married and lives in California.  My son, Sean, is in college. When I’m not working, I like to go camping, boating and spend time with family.”

Betty shares her favorite Bible verse:
Certainly, you made my mind and heart; you wove me together in my mother’s womb. – Psalm 139:13
“This verse reminds me that God has been always present in my life,” says Betty.

Do you love books? Me too! I love the feel of a brand new, and also a very old book. In honor of our focus on Dyslexia this month, I bring you a list of books written for children with Dyslexic characters. I think all children should read fun and interesting books like these so they can develop empathy and better understand how others think. If you have a child with Dyslexia or related learning difference, I feel it is imperative that they read and see positive examples of characters like themselves in books. Reading these books together can lead to good discussion and parents can use the examples in the books to focus on a child’s strengths. As parents, you may be looking for resources that help you on the parenting journey. Here is a list of some great reads for parents.

Learning through Service

TCS 8th grade students are raising money for their mission trip to the Dominican Republic in February. There, they will experience the culture of a foreign country as they exemplify Christ through service. If you are looking for help with various tasks around your home or business, please consider one of our “8th Grade Helpers” to assist you. Tasks may include: babysitting, dog walking, yard work, car washing, light office work, or anything you could use an extra set of hands to complete. Please contact TCS 8th grade mom, Dana Loncar and she will find a student to help you. All donations received for the work completed by the student will go towards their personal costs for the mission trip. Additionally, our 8th grade students are will be selling Sno-Cones at Lake Eola’s Fall Fiesta in the Park on November 3 and 4. On Thursday, November 8, come out to Gelato Fiasco in SODO for a sweet treat! 100% of sales will be donated to The Christ School’s 8th grade class. Thank you for supporting our TCS Lions!
