Safety is First

TCS staff and FPCO Security have noticed some families stopping in the active traffic lane of Church Street to drop children off in the morning. Please know this is not authorized by TCS and presents a danger to your children and the general public.

There are metered spaces on three sides of the school campus, and the parking garage for those of you who wish to drop off or walk your child(ren) into school.

If you are not going to walk your child(ren) to the door, please watch and make sure they have entered the building before you leave.

Also, please do not drop off child(ren) before 7:45 am. There are no TCS staff present in the Angel Wing area until 7:45 am. The school doors open at 7:50 am.

Appreciating God’s Creations

Karen Fatizzi, 2nd grade teacher, grew up in a small town in Alabama.  “I’m the middle child of three sisters,” she says. “Growing up, we enjoyed fishing with my dad.”

Karen attended the University of Montevallo, located outside of Birmingham, and earned her BA in Early Childhood/Elementary Education. In 1997, she moved to the Mt. Dora area for her first job as a teacher, where she taught second grade.

“My first summer in Florida, I moved to Boca Raton to study the Montessori Method of Education at the Claremont Institute,” says Karen. “I earned my certification in the Montessori Method for ages 6-9 and taught in a multi-age classroom for about five years teaching first, second, and third graders.”

“I meet my husband, Peter, the second week I moved to Mt. Dora,” says Karen. “We meet on a blind date! We’ve been married 18 years and have a son, Cameron, a TCS 6th grade student.”

Karen continues, “We live on the banks of the Little Wekiva River and we enjoy seeing God’s creation right in our own backyard – bears, water birds, otters, butterflies, and more. I love spending my free time outdoors with my family. We love white water rafting, hiking, snorkeling, exploring different beaches, and relaxing in our backyard. I also love working in my butterfly garden. Even as a child, I enjoyed working in our family garden and yard. My grandparents were also gardeners. We always had a big garden in our backyard and enjoyed fresh veggies from the garden. I also enjoy decorating and when I have some extra time I would like to take some interior design classes for fun.”

“My favorite thing about teaching 2nd grade is having the opportunity to go deeper into reading with my students,” says Karen. “It’s a joy to see my students reading fluency soar. I also love to teach art to my students. I always look for ways to incorporate art into our activities. We serve a creative God and I like to encourage creativity in the classroom.”

“There are so many wonderful things about being a teacher and a parent at TCS,” she says. “Two things that drew me to this school as a parent and as a teacher are the daily chapel and the high standards for learning. I like that my son is surrounded by teachers who are dedicated to our profession and that they are helping guide my son to live a life that is pleasing to God. Cameron has been very excited about middle school this year and is enjoying being in his House – Shepherd Watch.”

Karen shares her favorite Bible verse:
“One of my favorite names for God is Immanuel which means ‘God with us.’ I cling to the words in Ephesians 3:20 that ‘(God) is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.’”

Exuding Joy

“I love playing piano and singing and originally went to school to become a composer,” says TCS 4th grade teacher, Marie DiBiase. “I always thought I would have a career in music; that’s what I studied for two years in college. In the summer before I started pursuing my major, I really began praying for God to lead my next steps. At that point, God began to lead me down this new path where I could use all of the gifts He gave me in one area, education. I feel I can use each of my God-given gifts to teach and encourage students.”

This past summer, Marie married her longtime love Jon DiBiase. He served as a Marine and deployed to Iraq in two tours. Marie has a twin sister and an older brother. “I recently became an aunt!” she smiles.

“Growing up, I always heard there’s usually one attribute of God that people are known for having,” she says. “I always hope I show the joy of God to everyone I’m around. I enjoy laughing and encouraging people.”

“I love teaching fourth grade, especially math and science!” Marie says. “At this point in their academic journeys, students have a mindset that either they are good or bad at different subjects. My goal for every one of my students is that they learn to love every single subject area and feel that they have the potential to be successful in every subject, even if it doesn’t come easy for them at first.”

“My favorite thing about teaching at TCS is I get to influence every area of a child’s life. I get the privilege of helping mold my students academically, socially, and spiritually. It is such a joy to see how a child begins to learn more, to love God, and to serve those around them.”

Marie shares her favorite Bible verse:

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,

“This verse was spoken at my grandmother’s funeral, so I have some emotional attachment to it,” says Marie. “I feel this verse possesses so much wisdom that I felt my grandmother had.  It also helps me to understand God more. There are many seasons in our lives and not all of them make sense or provide comfort to us, but, they allow for the power and the grace of God to be revealed.”

Soccer Shots
Registration is open for the spring season of Soccer Shots for students in TK, kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades.  The spring session will have two eight week sessions with the Thursday sessions designated for our Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students and Tuesday sessions designated for our 1st and 2nd grade students.  The session will take place in the Green Space from 3:30 pm to 4:05 pm.  Register online at Orlando.ssreg.org.

The Effects of Advertising

Mrs. Sheldon’s 7th grade students are learning how messages in the advertising they see every day can affect their lives. After watching the movie, The Myth of Choice: How Junk-Food Marketers Target Our Kids, they discussed the negative effects advertising has on young people. These effects include obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol caused by advertising of junk food, the desire for unnecessary material things such as clothing and technology, and the toll advertising can have on us mentally through peer pressure and social norms. They are also learning that messaging on social media exposes them to concepts that may be inappropriate for young audiences and that children under the age of eight cannot determine fact from fiction, which leads them to believe that all they see on TV is true. It has been a valuable, eye-opening lesson!

Sharing Her Faith

Terra Townsend has enjoyed the opportunity to serve in different roles at The Christ School, making a difference in each one.  Currently, she serves as 6th Grade Bible and 6th & 7th Grade Latin teacher, as well as assisting the Academic Office with a variety of tasks. In January, she will also serve as TCS Chapel Coordinator, a role that is dear to her heart.

“I was the Children’s Pastor at Christ Church of Orlando (CCO) for over 12 ½ years and have been a teacher even longer,” says Terra. “Honestly, though, ministry wasn’t something I ever wanted to do as I come from a long line of pastors and did everything to avoid it. During graduate school in Pennsylvania, I came down to visit family and when God moves, He moves! While visiting, the opportunity presented itself for me to join the CCO staff. It was something I never thought I would ever do but, surprise!” she smiles.

“I left my position at CCO back in 2013 when our family relocated back to Pennsylvania. There, I served as the Director of Admissions and Development at Lehigh Christian Academy. It was a very short stay as we made the decision to return to Orlando after only 10 cold months. That’s when I joined the staff here at TCS. After a year out of ministry, my heart was empty, but was fulfilled again as I began teaching 8th grade Bible last year. That was the nudge that I needed to remind me of what God has called me to do. I knew in my heart that I would only find peace and fullfillment by sharing Jesus with kids! There is no greater feeling than sharing the love of Christ and teaching God’s truth!”

“I love teaching middle school because they are just beginning to become independent thinkers and there isn’t a better time to strengthen their faith,” says Terra. “They ask questions and want to know more. This is really is the time that their faith transitions. It transitions from ‘mom and dad taking them to church’ to their own personal relationship with God – it becomes real for the first time. It really is a privilege to have a front row seat as they grow!”

Terra and her husband, Gerald, have been married for almost 12 years and we have two children at TCS, Jude, who is in 4th grade, and Quinn, who is in 1st grade. Terra serves as a worship leader at her church. “I love to sing!” she says.  “I am an avid runner with two marathons under my belt and will be running in my 26th half marathon in January. I also love to shop.”

“I love seeing my own children every day at TCS,” Terra continues.”There are few jobs that allow you to see your kids during the day. Just stopping by the lunchroom and giving a quick hug makes my day complete.”

“I love that The Christ School is preparing students for real life Biblically.” she says. “By teaching not just the basics but the ‘why’ behind what we believe. TCS students are equipped with God’s word and are being taught to view the world through a biblical lens. They know how to filter ‘life’ through God’s word and make decisions that are weighed against scripture. It’s rewarding to know that I’ve contributed to their firm foundation in Christ!”

Terra shares her favorite Bible verse:  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.Romans 8:28.

New Experiences Every Day!

When you step into Alexandra Savage’s kindergarten classroom, you quickly notice the bright colors and fun characters of Dr. Seuss adorning every part of the room. “I have always loved Dr. Seuss,” says Alexandra. “When I was in high school, I worked for Universal Studios and came to love Dr. Seuss even more. I believe Dr. Seuss’ stories and books give children a fun and engaging way to develop a love of reading. The stories take you into the colorful and fun world of Dr. Seuss.”

Alexandra came to The Christ School in 2013 and has enjoyed getting to know her students and strengthening their love of learning.  “I have been a teacher for 7 years.” she says. “I come from a long line of teachers, so you can say it is in my blood. I originally was a Music Education major and I switched to a Psychology Major with a music minor. Then I realized that what I really wanted to do was teach, so I went back to school for my education degree.” When not at TCS, Alexandra enjoys crafting, going to crossfit and spending time with friends and family.

“My favorite things about teaching kindergarten are the many fun activities we do in the classroom. Almost everything we do is a new experience for my students. Kindergarten students are at such a fun age and they learn so quickly. I love doing activities that cover a variety of subjects. For example, recently, we took a whole day and made it “Grinch Day! The day was filled with activities that encompassed reading, math, science, and art through fun activities based on one book.”

“I feel so blessed to be part of The Christ School family,” says Alexandra. “I love that TCS really is one big family! As a teacher here, I am able to impact a child’s life while becoming close with their family. These families become friends and extended family.”

Your Contributions Made a Difference

Thank you to our TCS families for contributing items to the National Junior Honor Society’s Thanksgiving basket drive to provide meals for families in need in our community. The baskets were delivered by Summit Church and Hope Helps, who were delighted to share with us the gratitude of the families who received the baskets:

“I’m lonely at holidays since I don’t have family. It’s hard to be alone. I got to invite my neighbors over and we got to be a family. They helped cook!” L.A., an elderly low-income single gentleman. He lives near many other low-income seniors and a half-way house for those in recovery.

“This was unexpected. It’s not easy for me to accept help. Thank you for offering this. My family needed the help.” J.W. a dad who lost his job early this year and has been taking temp jobs, but is still struggling.

Love of Learning

As students progress into middle school, some find math and science to be a little daunting. Fortunately for our TCS students, 6th grade Math and Earth Science Teacher, Nicole Kleinsteuber, loves to share her passion for learning with her students; showing them that these subjects are interesting and fun. “I have taught 2nd, 4th and 6th grades,” she says. “I love teaching middle school because the students have great senses of humor! They keep me laughing which makes our learning even more fun.”

 “As a little girl, I used to play teacher all the time,” says Nicole. “I even made pretend work assignments for my stuffed animals that I could ‘grade.’ When I went to college, I had my first volunteer experience in the classroom and knew I had found my calling!”

“My favorite thing about teaching at The Christ School is the children,” says Nicole. “I love seeing how they help one another and love God. It is a blessing to learn and acquire new knowledge along with them.”

Nicole is always excited to bring science to life for her students through field trips and interactive experiments in her classroom. “I love exploring the beauty of God’s natural world in earth science with children,” she says. “One of my favorite days is when we take the students snorkeling in Rainbow River, where we can experience seeing the groundwater bubbling out of the earth. I also love rearing insects in our classroom to allow our students to explore Entomology; it provides such a sense of wonder. I find everything in earth science fascinating!”

Nicole and her husband, Eric, have two children who are TCS students, Sawyer, who is in 4th grade and Elizabeth, who is in 2nd grade. “It is wonderful to have my own children right down the hall from me during the day. I know they are in classrooms with teachers who have a true love for what they are doing. I am thankful they are at a school that grows their faith, creativity and intellect each day.”

Nicole shares her two favorite Bible verses:

Lessons with Love

It is clear through her engaging smile and positive nature that Staci Kelly, TCS 2nd grade teacher, loves being a teacher. “I cannot remember a time that I didn’t want to become a teacher,” says Staci. “I played teacher all of the time when I was a little girl. I just loved the idea of helping little kids. This is my 16th year as a teacher. Before coming to TCS, I taught in public school for 13 years.”

“Teaching 2nd grade is a blast,” she says. “I love that the students know how to read when they come to me and I can help them understand what they are reading by using different strategies.  I also love that 2nd grade students enjoy school and the activities we do on a day to day basis.  We do so many wonderful things in 2nd grade! I love our reading time together. It is a blessing to see so many light bulbs go off when they finally understand what they are reading. This sometimes gives them the ‘reading bug’ where they just can’t put down books!  I also really enjoy when we perform science experiments in the classroom because of the joy that exudes from my students when seeing science come alive right before their eyes.”

Staci and her husband, Shawn, who is a firefighter, have known each other almost their whole lives.” We grew up together at church, and have been married for 13 years,” she smiles. They have two children, Grant, who is in 6th grade at TCS and Ava, who is in 3rd grade at TCS. “We also have 3 dogs,” says Staci. “Our family loves to spend time with our extended family and go to the beach.” Staci shares some fun facts:  “I am the oldest of 3 girls. Our birthdays are January 24th, 25th, and 26th! Another crazy fact is that I dislike cheese,” she says.

“I love teaching at TCS for many reasons, but my most favorite thing about TCS is being able to teach about my faith in school,” she says  “I love that I can stop at any time during the day and pray about any situation with the class or just one student.  It brings a calmness to them.”

“I think the TCS is preparing Grant and Ava for a successful future in several ways,” continues Staci. “I believe that they are encouraged to work hard at being creative, to think critically, to communicate well, and to collaborate with others.  I also believe that TCS does a great job teaching them to be others oriented.”

Creative Classroom

TCS 5th grade teacher, Jenny Forbes, is known for bringing her lessons to life in her classroom through hands-on projects and thoughtful activities. “My favorite thing about teaching 5th grade is the opportunity to go deeper into the curriculum and venturing out into the community on field trips to see our curriculum come to life,” she says. “For example, our trip to Tallahassee allows us to see all three branches of Government at work.”

Although she is usually doing something creative with her students including escape rooms and building math data journals, one particular activity remains close to her heart. “By far, the 5th Grade Market (STORES) project is my favorite activity that I do with my students. The project is packed with so many 21st Century learning skills and who wouldn’t love creating their very own business at 10 years old!” she smiles. “The project challenges the students to solve problems with products that they make. They create their own business proposals and welcome the entire school body on the day of the 5th Grade Market. It has proven to be a fun 5th grade memory.”

Jenny, who was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, grew up here in Orlando. “I have two wonderful parents who I dearly love and enjoy spending time with them,” says Jenny. “My older brother, Justin, is married and has four children: Noah, Sofia, Eli, and Karis. They live in St. Augustine, where Justin serves as a professor at Flagler College. My sister-in-law, Bethany, works with YoungLives, an extension of the ministry YoungLife.” When not teaching or spending time with family, Jenny enjoys organizing events and spaces, spending time with her beloved yellow lab, Mattie, and participating in escape rooms.

Jenny has been a teacher for 10 years, serving as a 2nd grade teacher for 6 years and is now in her 5th year as a 5th grade teacher. “I have always loved working with children,” she says. “I babysat when I was younger and even created an internship when I was in high school at the elementary school I attended so I could explore the opportunity of teaching. At first, I thought I wanted to be a Kindergarten teacher, but quickly realized that God calls very special people to work with a room full of 5 year olds. I have a lot of respect for Kindergarten teachers.”

Jenny continues, “Every day is an adventure as a teacher. We wear many different hats throughout our day and I see the opportunity to be a teacher as a big responsibility and a blessing at the same time. We all can probably recall those teachers who were great influences in our lives and my prayer is that I can serve as a positive role model for my students and inspire them to be their best. One of the best parts of my job is when I get to witness a child experiencing an Ah-Ha moment. It gives me such joy!”

“My favorite thing about teaching here at TCS is that I have the privilege of inviting God into our classroom and into our every event,” says Jenny. “I didn’t have the freedom at my other school and it is what ultimately drew me to TCS. The community here at TCS is special. I thoroughly enjoy working alongside and learning from my colleagues who I call my dear friends.”

“It is reassuring to know that no matter what I will face in life, God is always there to comfort me and to help guide me through the difficult times,” says Jenny.

Sharing Her Passion for Reading

Hayes Schardt, The Christ School’s Media Specialist and Yearbook Adviser, loves to share her passion for reading with her students. In her role at TCS, she manages the school’s library and teaches information literacy lessons to all of lower school. She also leads the middle school Yearbook elective as the students plan, design, and put together the school’s yearbook.

Hayes was born in Ohio, and grew up in Longwood, FL. She attended Clemson University and Florida State University.  “In my free time, I enjoy reading, trivia game nights, yoga, movies, and participating in community theater,” she says.  “The most recent production I was in was [Miss], by William Newkirk. We performed at the Tampa Bay Theater Festival in September, and won first place in the full-length play category. There are negotiations about performing the play in Northern Florida in 2018.”

“I have been working as a school librarian for a total of 12 years,” says Hayes. “All my life I have been a lover of books and reading. I even began helping my own school libraries when I was in 1st grade. I was a Media Assistant in both middle and high school, and skipped my first college football season to learn how to use the university’s library system. Seriously, every Saturday you would find me in the library basement computer lab instead of attending the football games!” she says.

“I began my career as a 1st grade teacher,” she says. “The media center at my first school was woefully out of date and completely disorganized. I made the best of it since I was not in charge. Two years later, the principal hired me as the Media Specialist, and that started my career of teaching children by showing: showing a love of reading and books, a love of book characters that come to life when you have the right librarian, showing how books often have the answers to questions you may be afraid to ask, showing how a library is organized and functions, showing how they can become independent gatherers of information with a little bit of teaching and guidance.”

Hayes came to TCS in 2014. “I love teaching at TCS because of the close-knit relationships between teachers, students and parents. In my other schools, I would know the students’ names and sometimes identify a sibling or two if I met them. But, at this school, I know who is sibling to whom, I have met the parents, both in school and out. I see them at the local grocery store; I even know some of their pets’ names! I feel like I am a wanted and loved member of this school, and it’s the best feeling when you get up in the morning, and you are excited about going to your job!” says Hayes.

“This year in Library class, I was especially excited to introduce some great book series to the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students via class read alouds. They love them! Children may not admit it, but even 12-year-olds love to have a story read out loud to them once in a while,” she says. “I also love the Sunshine State program. The students get so excited about reading for their incremental prizes, and a few of them are aiming to get to the Hall of Fame this year!”

“Two years ago, The Christ School leadership asked me to take on the role of Yearbook Advisor,” she says. “I was excited about this new challenge. Yearbook is a rigorous course because there is a lot these students have to accomplish in a short amount of time. But at the same time it’s important to have fun while we work. We celebrate each others’ birthdays, and sometimes have Fun Friday Fests, which means unexpected treats are available. It has been a fun experience because I love interacting with the middle school crowd. Being a Specials class solely for lower school, I missed the students after they moved on to middle school.”

Sharing Her Passions

Laura Kerlek, 6th grade Language Arts and Social Studies and 7th/8th grade Personal Finance teacher, inspires her students every day through her positive attitude and example of living a happy life.

“I have been teaching 23 years,” she says. “I can’t remember a time when I didn’t always want to be a teacher ‘when I grew up.’  As a little girl, I would line up my dolls behind shoe box ‘desks’ that I had made and pretended they were in my classroom and I was their teacher. I really enjoy teaching middle school. I love my students’ energy, wit and creative thinking. There is never a dull moment in my classroom!”

“I am so happy to teach at The Christ School,” Laura continues. “I love being able to discuss not only my walk with God and faith but to help the students grow in theirs. My favorite part of my day is Homeroom. I like starting the day by just being able to talk and laugh with the students.”

Laura is also a mom of three sons.  “I raised my sons in Naples, Florida and when my youngest son graduated from high school, I moved to Orlando to be near my sisters and mom to avoid the ‘empty nest,’” she says. “My sons are my world even though they are now grown. Two are currently finishing their degrees at the University of Florida and my oldest son lives in St. Petersburg. I like that they are all so close because I get to visit them often and they like to surprise visit me!”

One of Laura’s passions is running. “I am currently training for the Disney Fairy Tale Challenge in February. This will be my most challenging race to date. It is a 10K one day followed by a 1/2 marathon the next,” she says. She shares her passion with our students as one of The Christ School’s cross country coaches. “I absolutely love running!” she says. “I don’t run to win races, I run for my own personal goals and that is why I enjoy it. I just sort of fell into the cross country coach role. One day I suggested to a student that she try running. She decided to try it and the next thing I knew I was running with her at practice! The coach at the time asked if I would ‘help out’ with the girls and that’s how my coaching career started.”

Laura continues, “I really enjoy coaching because my sons are now grown and I was always extremely active going to their games, meets and practices. Coaching now brings back those memories I had following my sons in their sports.”

She also enjoys college football. “Go USF Bulls! They are currently ranked in the top 25,” Laura smiles. She also enjoys relaxing on the beach reading.

Laura shares her favorite Bible verse. “It reminds me to always keep God in my sight,” she says.

Inspiring Our Littlest Lions

Almost every school day, you will find Susan Dodgion and her Transitional Kindergarten students exploring something new about TCS. “In Transitional Kindergarten, we like to stop and explore things in a lot of detail,” she says. “The students always enjoy discovering new things.”

Susan is a native Floridian who has 10 brothers and sisters. “My parents had a beautiful spirit and taught us many of life’s lessons by their example,” she says. Susan attended St. James Catholic School and Bishop Moore High School, and graduated from Orlando Junior College and Rollins College. “Most of my extended studies were provided by Florida Southern College,” she says. “When not teaching, I love working in my yard, spending time with my family and walking.”

“This is my 49th year of teaching God’s little people and I never tire of this wonderful calling that God chose for me,” says Susan. “The longer I remain in the classroom working with children, the more I love it. I began practicing being an educator with my younger brothers and sisters. We would play school, perform plays and shows and have choir practice. Since I was the oldest daughter in the family I would usually be the teacher.

“Schools that I have taught at include St. James, Immaculate Heart of Mary in Atlanta, GA, The Weekday School, Lake Highland and The Christ School.  I taught first and second grade, spent a little time in fifth grade during my initial days in education and was challenged to teach a non-graded program in Atlanta, GA for 2 years. My very favorite place to be is Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten!  The ‘Grandmother Spirit’ in me leads me to consider myself as an advocate for little ones,” she says.

“There are so many wonderful opportunities offered to us as teachers,” says Susan. “We learn something new every single day and we grow to love many special children and families. It is really exciting to witness the friendships that are formed in the classroom and to see our 5 year-old students grow to be teenagers and adults. I am always so grateful when I run into a former student who is now a grown up. It is usually the smile or the eyes that lead me to recognize them. One of the treats of being a longtime teacher is that I sometimes am able to teach the children of my former students, and that is so fun!”

“Our best part of the school day is Centers time. That is when imaginations run wild, Masterpieces are created and our little friends participate in their very favorite activities. True friendships blossom and strengthen during these times,” she says.

Susan continues, “It has always been my privilege to teach in a private, independent or parochial school where we are free to and encouraged to learn about God, sing about God, and worship God. I cannot imagine being in a classroom where we could not weave Him throughout our day. The Christ School offers us a family who joins with us in our journey of faith and a safe port in the storm during fearful or trying times”

Get to Know Alissa Plaisance

Each one of our families have benefited from the experience and knowledge of Alissa Plaisance, TCS Student Support Specialist.  In her role, Alissa provides strategies, support and ideas to teachers and students as well as teaming with parents to ensure all students at TCS are successful. She collaborates with Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy and other types of specialists to provide services to students on campus. In addition, Alissa collaborates with Mrs. Gibbs to support our COMPASS program. “I also assist our teachers as we explore the concept of growth mindset at TCS,” she says. “It has been exciting to share growth mindset ideas and resources with teachers and families!”

Alissa is a Florida native and keeps busy with her husband Chris and daughters Marin, TCS 2nd grade student, and Nova, age 2. “We love to spend family time at home together,” she says. Alissa began her career in education as a classroom teacher for students with learning disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders. She also worked as a Learning Specialist at Florida Diagnostic Learning Resource Systems providing professional development to teachers throughout Central Florida.

“I love being part of The Christ School Faculty,” says Alissa. “I have worked in public and charter school settings and this is by far the most professional and loving environment. It is a blessing to be here. I am most thankful to be able to collaborate and learn from my teammates in the Academic Office. Mrs. Gordon and Mrs. Lail are fabulous people bringing great ideas to TCS.”

“TCS has been a wonderful home for my family as well,” Alissa continues. “I have been in awe of the foundation for learning that Marin has received here at TCS. Each of her teachers over the past three years have been amazing. They have given her a love of learning and also come alongside me as a parent with guidance and wisdom when I have needed it. I believe it takes a village to raise a child and The Christ School community has played a wonderful part in loving on Marin.”

Called to Teach

Although she didn’t originally start out on that path, TCS first grade teacher Christi Schwalk always knew her true calling, to be a teacher.

Christi grew up a long way from Central Florida in Roswell, New Mexico.  “I met my husband Tim when we were in elementary school (although we didn’t start dating until college),” she says. “We have one daughter, Kenley, age 7.  Together as a family, we love traveling, watching movies, playing board games and just spending time together.  I also love to read, draw and do anything involving arts and crafts.  I’ve actually taken many painting lessons and classes and have two of my own paintings hanging in my house. I always challenge myself to read as many books as I can in one year and I love to read all types of books.  And, I really love to cook!  I enjoy cooking because you don’t have to use precise measurements.  I don’t like baking though, it’s much too precise for me!”

“When I started college, I planned on being a pediatric nurse,” says Christi. “At the college I was attending in Texas, many of the nursing classes overlapped with early childhood education classes, so I was constantly around other people that were training to be teachers.  Eventually, I realized that I was meant to be a teacher.  My grandmother was a college professor and my mom was a teacher and then a guidance counselor, so I have always been around teachers and fell in love with helping children learn.”

“When Tim and I moved to Florida from Texas, I was looking for a job while I finished my degree at UCF,” Christi continues. “That’s when I found out about The Christ School.  I started working as a receptionist in the school office.  I also did billing for a while.”

Christi continues, “I really feel that teaching is my calling. it’s not just a job. I also particularly feel that I am called to teaching in a Christian school.  I enjoy infusing God into all subjects and watching the children grow spiritually and academically.  I love being the classroom and knowing that everyday will be different.  I love to make learning fun and to help children think and challenge themselves. I enjoy first grade students because they are so loving and fun! Six and seven year olds have a zest for life and are joyful! Our class loves doing Go Noodle and any activity on our iPads. One of my favorite things that we do in class each day are to begin and end with prayer. I love hearing them pray for each other.”

“My favorite thing about TCS is the people I work with,” she shares.  “They make each day fun, they are supportive and are like my family.  We have laughed, cried and prayed each other through many different circumstances and I am thankful for their friendship.  I am especially thankful for my own daughter attending school here at TCS. I went to a private Christian elementary school very similar to TCS and realize as an adult how much it shaped my worldview.  I still remember Bible verses I learned in elementary school.  I am grateful that Kenley is in an environment where she is challenged, lovingly corrected, and encouraged to grow spiritually.”

Medications in School

Parents, please know that all medication must be kept in the clinic per section 8.5 in our Parent Handbook. This includes all cough drops. Section 8.5 of our Parent Handbook reads: The Christ School First Aid and Medication policy states all medications (prescription and over-the-counter) must be kept in the clinic to help monitor student use throughout the school day. The school Healthcare Assistant must have written parental consent to dispense any medication. This includes off-campus activities such as field trips, the public library, sporting events, etc. Authorization Forms are only valid for the school year in which they are completed. Thank you for helping us keep our students healthy and safe!

Love of Teaching

TCS 3rd grade teacher Shay Roberts’ love of teaching shines through her classroom. “I enjoy working with children and have since a young age,” she says. “I knew I wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember.”

“My favorite thing about teaching 3rd grade is the students. They love to learn and their joy is contagious! They make teaching so much fun,” she says. “Our favorite things to do in our classroom are GoNoodle or Kahoot. They are online games that review things we have learned. I also love our trip to Epcot every year. We learn so much about many different countries.”

“The best part about my job is being about to teach my students about the love of Jesus and to show His love through my actions,” she says. “I also have such wonderful co-workers at TCS!”

Shay earned her Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood/Elementary/Special Education from Samford University, where she played Division 1 Soccer. She and her husband, Drew, have 2 children, Leah, age 5, and Eve, age 3. “We enjoy traveling, beach days, and eating yummy new foods,” Shay says. “I love to cook and to work out doing Crossfit in my spare time.”

Shay shares her favorite Bible verse.  “My favorite verse is Psalm 23, I memorized it as a kid and still know it word for word,” says Shay.

Inspiring Students

Amy Cline was destined to become a kindergarten teacher.  Throughout her life, Amy was inspired by her mom, who has been teaching kindergarten for 30 years. “Growing up as the daughter of a teacher, I was able to see the impact that teachers make on their students,” says Amy.  “I always knew that is what I wanted to do, too.”

Amy received her Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Florida State University.  After that, she set out to pursue her goal of inspiring students of her own.

“I love teaching kindergarten because we have fun all day!” she says. “We are always laughing and learning about all that God has made. I enjoy going outside and reading with the kindergarten students.”

When not teaching, Amy loves exploring a city with friends and reading a good book. She also shares her love of music teaching piano to students after school.

Love of Literature

Tracy Sheldon, TCS 7th and 8th grade Language Arts teacher, fell in love with literature when she was in 8th grade. “My teacher took us on a Close read of S. E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. Once I realized that there is so much more to be obtained from reading than just for pleasure, I was hooked. High school and college presented many more opportunities to fall in love with reading as I was exposed to more genres,” she says.

“My second grade teacher, Mrs. Schuette, inspired me to become a teacher,” says Tracy. “She had such a passion for children, teaching, and God that made me feel so loved and as though I could do anything I set my mind to, and glorify God in the process. From that day forward, I knew I wanted to teach and instill that love in others.”

“My favorite thing about teaching at The Christ School is the community feel,” she says. “Everyone is here to serve one another, including faculty, staff, parents, and children. We all have a love for God and one another.”

“I love when my students get excited about a story we just read in class, especially when it’s their first time seeing that they can learn so much more than just about characters and setting,” says Tracy. “For example, when they can apply themes and lessons to their own lives and they begin to relate to the characters, setting, and plot. This is when I know that I’ve exceeded my goal as a teacher. This is when our discussions come alive in the classroom and learning becomes a joy for my students. I also love when my students see their essays posted on the board in class, and they feel the pleasure of knowing that hard work pays off. Watching children flourish in reading and writing is the highlight of my life. It never gets old, and it happens more and more every year.”

Tracy continues, “In my classroom, we share stories about ourselves when we read and write in class. Learning about one another is always fun. Also, each quarter, the students work with one another to outperform classmates on creative posters that introduce our new unit. This is an exciting time in the classroom because, not only do they work well together, they always manage to create posters that are extraordinary, which highlights all of their gifts and talents!”

Tracy smiles as she talks about her family, “I have a sweet little angel, Ashlyn, who is almost three, and a loving and supportive husband who understands and adores my passion for teaching. He visits often with Ashlyn, and they always bring a smile to my face, as well as to the students who happen to be in class when my loves visit. Ashlyn calls all of my students her friends and loves to pray for them all. As I said, my favorite part of TCS is the community feel, and even my own family senses it when they come to visit. When away from TCS, my little family of three enjoys time at the beach and at the playground, spending quality time together and loving life and praising God for the beautiful blessings He has provided for us.

“I am so grateful that God has blessed me with this calling. Watching children blossom is the most amazing experience and the most valuable because it helps me grow as a teacher, mother, wife, and most importantly, in my Faith and as a believer in Christ Jesus,” says Tracy.

Meet Audrey Marshall

The Christ School is delighted to welcome Audrey Marshall, who serves as Kindergarten Assistant. “I had been praying for God to help place me in a loving, Christian environment like The Christ School when Theresa Opsahl, who works in The Christ School office, reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in the position,” says Audrey. “I have known her for a long time because I went to high school with her son, Luke, who is married to my best friend, Shannon (both TCS class of 2004).  I was so happy when she called – it was the answer to my prayers!”

Audrey was born and raised in Orlando. “My parents and grandparents are also Orlando natives,” she says. “My great aunt and uncle started a citrus business in the late 1930’s in Christmas, FL. They were in this business for almost 80 years. One of my favorite memories as a child was going to visit them with my siblings and cousins because we would run through the orange groves and play tag.”

Audrey joyfully speaks about her new role at TCS, “The Christ School environment is contagious! From the moment I step on campus, I feel love and kindness from each staff member, teacher, and student. Everyone here welcomes you with a friendly smile and always offers a lending hand when needed.”

“The best part of my job is seeing the children each day,” she continues. “Every morning I am greeted with precious smiles, warm hugs, and the occasional ‘Guess what, Mrs. Marshall?’ that leads into an exciting story! I can’t think of a better way to start my day!  Watching the children interact with each other brings me joy. It makes me happy when I see our students spreading love to one another throughout the day.”
