Life Lessons Through Business

Our 5th grade students enjoyed a unique opportunity to create and manage their own stores. First, they produced a business proposal that included products, prices, and marketing strategies. On December 17, the students opened their stores and welcomed K-4th grade students as their customers.  Using “Because Bucks,” the younger students shopped the variety of items offered at the stores.  Through this experience, the 5th grade students learned about supply and demand, the importance of good customer service, and money management.  Our shoppers also learned about money and time management, as they were all given the same amount of “Because Bucks” and had a limited time to shop.  It was exciting to see the many creative ideas the students had for their stores and to watch them interact with customers.  We are proud of our entrepreneurs!

Great Christmas Gift Ideas from Compass

Are you looking for fun, yet educational gifts for your young scholar?  Meredith Gibbs, Compass teacher at The Christ School, has some suggestions based on games she uses in class that her students love.  Mrs. Gibbs says, “Fast-thinking games are Spot It and SpeedeeBee, which can be found on blueorangegames.com. They are a great replacement for electronics while waiting for your food at a restaurant.  The students also enjoy Suspend, Old Maid, and Go Fish. Even my middle school students love these games.

“Every single student loves Keva Contraptions.  I bought the 200 piece set and my children (and yours) love it.  It comes with pages of ideas and the options are limitless.  Every Christmas, I try to get Keva’s latest “add on.”  This year, we built the Catapault.  The least expensive place that I have found Keva Contraptions is Amazon.com.  Be sure to get the one that has the storage bag!  You can also find challenging mazes for all ages that are colorful and difficult (Maze Craze series and The Ultimate Maze Books are excellent) on Amazon.com.

“For older students, I also recommend Creationary, a lego based game that is creative and challenging.  For the younger girls and boys (k-3), you can find fantastic sticker books by Usborne that are fun for a car or plane ride,” says Mrs. Gibbs.

Get to Know Mike Coryell, Student Programs Specialist

Get to Know Mike Coryell, Student Programs Specialist

Mike Coryell began his work at the Christ School in January of 2015. Since his arrival, Mike has enhanced The Christ School Academic team through his hard work and commitment to the success of our students.  Mike began his educational career as a teacher, first at Chain of Lakes Middle School as a math instructor, then at Conway Middle School, where he taught for ten years.  “I started teaching computers, but soon I was teaching computers, yearbook, video production, and a lot of other subjects,” he says.  After earning a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, he turned his focus to administration.  “I felt that as an administrator, I could affect more students than just the ones in my classroom,” he says.   Mike served as Administrative Dean at Conway Middle School for two years before coming to TCS.

Mike’s role at TCS has many facets.  The biggest part of his job is to organize and implement all of the diverse student programs at TCS including the middle school class trips, middle school and high school transition, the National Junior Honor Society, Middle School Retreat, and graduation.  He is also responsible for student discipline.  “What is important to know is that TCS believes in restorative discipline,” says Mike. “This means that when a student needs discipline, it really means that there is a broken relationship that needs to be restored.  Whether the relationship is student to student or student to teacher, the goal is to fix the relationship.  Discipline is not always about punishment; it is about making sure the student understands how things can be corrected and how their actions impact others.  I have worked to build trust with our students so they know I am here to help them; they know that they have someone here that they can talk to when they have a problem.”

Mike also serves as the school’s RenWeb liaison.  “With my background in computers, it was a good fit,” he says.  “My goal is to ensure that RenWeb is an efficient way for families and teachers to communicate.  Since I have been here, I have standardized our system to make RenWeb easier for our teachers.  We are now implementing forms to help make sign-ups for field trips, clubs, and other activities more efficient.”

Although he started his new position at TCS just a year ago, Mike is a familiar friend at our school.  “As an undergraduate, I completed my student teaching at TCS back in 2002,” says Mike.  “I feel as though  I was called back here.  Three years ago, I spoke with Jason about coming back to work here.  I was finishing my Masters Degree, and the timing wasn’t right.  For me to be effective at TCS, I needed to be in an Administrator’s shoes for a while first, so I gained the experience that helped me to be able to fulfill my role here.” Mike continues, “Middle school is my focus and my passion. I am glad to be at TCS in this role, where I can make a difference in the lives of our students.”

Mike and his wife, Tricia, have two children.  Their daughter Angela is a student at UCF. Their son John is an Orange County Sheriff.

Questions From Open House

“How is The Christ School’s teaching method different than common core?”
The Christ School uses Fides as our structure to ensure delivery of academic excellence.  Within Fides, we have our Essential Knowledge. The Christ School’s Essential Knowledge sets forth our standards of what we expect our students to know and be able to do. The standards incorporate many of the same standards that are part of the Common Core. These standards existed before The Christ School and Common Core were ever conceptualized and just make common sense for teaching and learning.  As The Christ School continuously refines our Essential Knowledge, we exceed the basics of Common Core as we endeavor to provide an academically rigorous course of instruction for our students. For more information on The Christ School’s Fides academic structure and Essential Knowledge, contact Amber Lail.

Safety at The Christ School

The Christ School takes the safety of our students very seriously. Please help us continue to offer a safe learning environment for all students and staff by following The Christ School’s safety guidelines. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. On campus, TCS and First Pres have a full time security staff. Procedures are in place for any suspicious activity near campus, including the notification of staff, security, and the OPD. TCS actively incorporates the practice of fire, weather, and lock-down drills. Doors to The Christ School remain locked at all times. Guests are welcomed into our school building by our receptionist, asked to present identification, required to sign in and wear a name tag. All volunteers who work with our students must complete and pass a level 2 fingerprint background check to be allowed to accompany TCS students on field trips or assist with in-school activities. Thank you for understanding when we are having a practice drill or ask for your identification. Safety matters! If you have any questions or concerns about safety issues at TCS, please contact Bill Herlong.

Open Letter to The Christ School

Open Letter to The Christ School
The Christ School recently received a letter in commendation of the athletes who comprise The Christ School’s 7th and 8th grade girls’ basketball team. We are extremely proud of their exemplary behavior; demonstrating their leadership skills and being others-oriented. Please join us this Friday, November 13, at 8:15 a.m. in the FPCO Sanctuary, as we celebrate these students in Chapel. Please enjoy the letter below:
“Hello, my name is Isabella Feld and I play middle school basketball at Trinity Prep. I am number 21 for TPS. I just wanted to ask if you could share this message with your girls’ middle school basketball team and let them know that they have amazing sportsmanship and were very supportive after the game today (Monday, November 9). I got injured during the 3rd quarter, and I don’t know if I will be able to play the rest of the season, but I am happy I got to finally play against my favorite team – TCS. Your team is very respectful of the other teams and is a very hard team to beat, which is why you are my favorite team to play – I like a challenge. Thank you so much for the compliments after the game and thank you for being really supportive of me after I got injured. I really appreciate it! Your middle school girls basketball team came up to me afterwards, because I couldn’t get up to walk for the high fives after the game, and said “Are you ok? You did great out there! You are a really great basketball player and shooter!” I felt so happy and confident that I will be able to play again and hopefully against your team soon! Thank you so much for the opportunity to play such a great team like yours! Thank you so much! Have a great week!”

Blue Dog Creations

Fifth grade art students learned about the artist George Rodrigue, a Cajun artist who is most well known for his various Blue Dog paintings. They learned about the inspiration behind Rodrigue’s work as well as how his own history played a part in the creation of the iconic Blue Dog. Students were introduced to contour line drawing as well as how to draw figures which are proportional. Each student was required to produce a proportional contour line sketch of the Blue Dog prior to creating their final piece. When they were ready, each student created his or her own Blue Dog using whichever colors and adornments had personal significance to the artist. Each of these awesome Blue Dogs are unique!

Last Opportunity to Join Lions’ Song

Today is the last day to join the Lions’ Song Choir, a non-auditioned choir open to all TCS 4th and 5th graders. To join, contact Mrs. Sweet today to let her know you would like to join.  Lions’ Song members sing in special performances throughout the year, in addition to the Christmas Program and Grandparents’ Day.  This year, some of their special performances include a Christmas concert for Young At Heart, singing at The Festival of Trees at the Orlando Museum of Art, singing for the Christmas tree lighting at Arnold Palmer Hospital, singing for the Magic game in February, and more!

Rehearsals are held on Wednesday mornings from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. and Wednesday afternoons from 3:40 to 4:10 p.m. in the chorus room. All Lions’ Song members must commit to one rehearsal a week, either in the morning or in the afternoon however, members are welcome to come to both rehearsals. If Wednesdays do not fit your child’s schedule but your child really wants to participate in choir, please email Mrs. Sweet.

Choir members will wear white tuxedo shirts, black pants, black shoes and a green cummerbund and bow tie. The cummerbunds and bow ties are provided by the school.  Members will need to purchase the white tuxedo shirt ($14.00) and a pair of black pants and shoes.  The tuxedo shirts will be ordered by TCS. Girls in the 5th grade will wear their black skirts from last year.  If you are a 5th grade girl who is new to Lions’ Song, Mrs. Sweet has a skirt for you.

Bible Buddies

Students in 4th and 8th grades enjoyed getting to know one another during “Bible Buddies” as they shared information about themselves with a timeline. This new connection between lower and middle school gives the students an opportunity to share what God is teaching them, build community, and offer prayer time and encouragement between students. This week, the 4th grade students will share with 8th graders what they are learning in class,  the “House of Truth.” The students will meet every other week and will write to one another during the week they do not meet.

Studying Native Americans

Studying Native Americans
Our fifth grade students recently studied and created reports on Native American tribes from various regions across the United States. Working in small groups, the students integrated technology into their daily quest to find facts on topics such as where the tribes lived, what they ate, what their everyday life was like, and different ways the specific tribes interacted with English settlers. Groups also had the opportunity to add a creative element to their final presentations. Dioramas were constructed, tribal flags were created, delicious food was shared, and costumes were designed. It was a great learning experience and a fun memory for everyone.

Kind Words Lift Spirits

Who loves a bit of joy, love, and kind words in their life? The young scholars in Compass class, that’s who!  In her recent Chapel lesson, TCS parent Alexis Kramer extolled the value of looking someone in the eye, smiling and offering kind words. Compass Teacher Mrs. Gibbs reflected on that powerful message and the verse, “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.” – Proverbs 12:25, and put it into practice to open each Compass class last week.  “What better way to get comfortable in building each other up than to practice?” she says.  Each scholar was given a classmate to greet by name, smile, and offer two kind things about him/her.  “It was beautiful,” says Mrs. Gibbs.  “Even on the cloudy day, it felt as though God’s love warmed up the room and filled it with His light!”  Afterward, some students reflected on the activity.
Some of their comments were:
“Wow, that almost made me cry happy tears!”
“I didn’t realize anyone noticed that about me!”
“I was uncomfortable looking someone that I know really well in the eye so maybe I need to do it more often!”
“This just made my day a happy one!”
“Can we do this more often Green Room Gibbs?”  (Mrs. Gibbs’ favorite)

Exploring Triptychs

TCS middle school 2D Art Elective students created organically-inspired triptychs. Some of their creations are on display in the middle school hallway, and you can see them at Open House on Thursday.  For the lesson, students learned about the long history of triptychs used in Christian art. Triptychs are a 3 framed image, often with a large central figure flanked by two related smaller images. These works were often devotional in nature, depicting biblical scenes and/or saints. The utilitarian function of a triptych was that it could be folded and therefore transported safely to other sites. The students also learned that the tradition of a triptych is still going, although the subject matter has expanded beyond the secular realm.
Students also learned about creating a “contour-line drawing” which would capture the curves and contours of a subject. Armed with this knowledge, the class headed outside to a garden next to the campus to create contour-line drawings of natural subject matter. These observational sketches were then used to create a 3 part triptych of their own. Color theory was also applied when the students were challenged to use a different color scheme in each panel.
