DNA Models

Our 7th grade students have been working hard making their own DNA models.  Simulations help us to study things that are too small to see.  DNA, the nucleic acid found in the nuclei of all our cells, is our hereditary information passed on from our parents.  This macro-molecule is key to our existence. This project helped the students understand the double helix design of a DNA molecule.  The students used all sorts of fun things to represent each part of the DNA molecule including Christmas bulbs, feathers, beads and candy!

Animal Habitat Museum

TCS 3rd grade students held an Animal Habitat Museum on November 20, the culminating event in a unit dedicated to research, writing, and science. Prior to the museum opening, each student researched an animal based on an assigned habitat using the TCS iPads, and wrote a report on their chosen animal. They then created a model of their animal using recycled materials to display at the museum. Additionally, they created a habitat display working together as a group. The students had many interesting animal facts to share with the parent visitors as they toured their museum.

2nd Grade Native American Feast

Second grade students have been studying how Native Americans used the resources around them to survive. Their studies have included reading, storytelling, book reports in diorama form, art, music, computer, hands-on projects, a field trip to The History Center, and preparing food for a Native American feast, which took place today.  For their feast, they shucked corn, snapped beans, baked pies, and prepared Indian Fry Bread and a rice dish. They also prepared Native American clothing for the feast and Pow Wow, where they danced and sang. Their pinch pots and dioramas showing the environment of tribes throughout North America were displayed. A lot of learning fun took place for students, parents, and teachers!

Veterans’ Day

Veterans’ Day
Many thanks to Don Rudolph, who served as a medic in the U.S. Navy, and his grandson, Specialist Joshua Greenstein, who currently serves in the U.S. Army, for speaking at our Veterans’ Day Chapel. Did you know that our 7th/8th Grade Math Teacher, TJ Ross, is also a veteran? Mr. Ross served as Sergeant  in the U.S. Army for eight years. Our 2nd grade students surprised him yesterday with handwritten thank you notes for his service to our country. They also wrote letters to be sent to former TCS students who are currently serving and to grandparents who served.

Exploring Atoms

Exploring Atoms

TCS 8th grade students have been learning about atoms and the three subatomic particles – protons, neutrons and electrons. Everything around us is made of atoms, but what do they look like? Simulations help students study things that are too small to see. The students each created an atom to help them understand the design of this tiny particle. They used household items to represent the protons and neutrons in the atom’s nucleus and the electrons that float in rings around the core nucleus. The students held a contest for the unit project, and chose the winners based on neatness, accuracy, the content of their descriptive paragraph, and the intricacy and originality of each model.

Robots Enhance Programming Skills

The middle school technology elective class has built and is programming LEGO Mindstorm robots. The robots can follow many commands — not just driving and turning, but recognizing colors, stopping a certain distance from an obstacle, and even sounding an alarm and reacting when they detect a problem.

Every Wednesday the middle school technology elective has “20% time” patterned after Google, Inc.’s employees’ work. 20% (one day each week) of their time is spent on their own technology projects. This semester most of the students in our technology elective class have chosen to work on the Mindstorm robots to challenge their own programming skills.

Exploring Tangrams

This week in Compass, students are being introduced to TANGRAMs by playing a strategy game called Tangram Force-Out.  Tangrams are sets of 7 geometric shapes.  Why use them?  Using Tangrams gives students an opportunity to better understand  geometry beyond memorizing geometric facts.  They create vivid images for students.  When moving the pieces around, they can be combined to create other shapes, which begins a natural exploration of area, perimeter, similarity, and symmetry.  When we combine this with a strategy game, the students are exploring spatial relationships and developing strategic thinking skills.  In attempting to be the last to place a Tangram piece on the board, students visualize where pieces might fit and use this knowledge to plan future moves, strategizing to deny their partner space on the grid. After several games, the students will develop different strategies to win the game, enhancing their problem-solving abilities.

Middle School Retreat

Rooted in Truth. Strengthened in Faith.  Last week, TCS Middle School students and their teachers took time outside of the classroom walls to “retreat” and build community across grade levels.  The purpose of the Middle School Retreat is to strengthen relationships, work as teams, play, learn and worship together as a middle school community.  Our students and teachers did this and much more, taking away valuable lessons on where their roots are located and how to strengthen their faith each day.  It was a spirit-filled experience for everyone!

Important Carpool Information

Important Carpool Information

Now that we are in the second week of school, we would like to remind you of our morning carpool procedures. Safety is our top priority, but timeliness is also important. Please be sure to follow these important morning carpool procedures to ensure our students safety as they arrive for school.

Morning carpool time is 7:50 – 8:10 a.m.

  • Please arrive in carpool by 8:10 a.m. Teachers bring their students to the sanctuary immediately following carpool, and all cars must be clear of the Angel Wing at that time. Staying on schedule is key to starting the day off right for the teachers and students.
  • Have your child packed and ready to exit. Students should not be eating breakfast or playing video games after entering campus. This causes delays.
  • Keep your eyes on the staff and safety patrols who are running carpool. Due to the glare on the windshields,  it is often difficult to see the driver’s face. The staff and safety  patrols will wave you forward or signal you to stop.
  • Wait until a patrol opens your car door before allowing your child to exit the car.
  • Park in a legal parking spot if you are walking your child onto campus.
  • Ensure that you have a direct line of sight with a TCS staff person prior to releasing your child from your care if you are walking your child onto campus.
  • Drivers, please refrain from any cell phone or other technology usage (including ear pieces) once carpool has started. The children are at risk if you are using a device.

Parent Teacher Fellowship Spirit Bible Study

Parent Teacher Fellowship
Spirit Bible Study

TCS women and friends are invited for 6 weeks of fellowship as we learn and apply to our lives the word of God through the study “Unglued: Making Wise Decisions in the Midst of Raw Emotions” by Lysa TerKeurst.

Join us Wednesday evenings in the TCS Media Center from 7:00-9:00 p.m. starting September 10.  The cost of study is $11.00 (participant’s guide).  We regret that childcare is not available.

For more information or to register, please contact Jen Bostedo at jbostedo@cfl.rr.com or 407-496-1812 by Friday, September 5.

Lysa TerKeurst is a New York Times bestselling author and speaker who helps everyday women live an adventure of faith through following Jesus Christ. As president of Proverbs 31 Ministries, Lysa has led thousands to make their walk with God an invigorating journey.

In the study Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions, Lysa will equip you in her inspiring and practical way to:

  • Know with confidence how to resolve conflict in your important relationships.
  • Find peace in your most difficult relationships as you learn to be honest but kind when offended.
  • Identify what type of reactor you are and how to significantly improve your communication.
  • Respond with no regrets by managing your tendencies to stuff, explode or react somewhere in between.
  • Gain a deep sense of calm by responding to situations out of your control without acting out of control.

TCS Yearbook 2015

Work on our TCS 2015 yearbook has begun!  This summer, 8th grade TCS Yearbook editors Logan Kimble and Karly Evans, along with yearbook adviser Mrs. Minnick, took part in a three-day hands-on training program,Yearbookpalooza, one of the largest summer yearbook workshops in the country.  Advisers and students from middle schools, high schools and colleges throughout the state of Florida attended.

The students and Mrs. Minnick had the opportunity to choose from over 40 different seminars offering instruction on virtually every aspect of yearbook publishing.  Armed with our theme “Rooted in Christ,” they collaborated with a professional graphic artist to design a unique cover for our TCS 2015 yearbook.

Logan Kimble entered her layout in the “Advanced Grid Design” contest, and, for the second year in a row, was recognized in the closing ceremony for winning third place!

Mrs. Minnick says, “I am proud of the diligence and enthusiasm that Karly and Logan devoted to their classwork and instruction, and I am grateful to their parents for providing their tuition for this workshop. Jean Henry and Teenie Reddeck, our school’s Herff Jones representatives, generously provided me with an adviser scholarship so that I could accompany my students.”
