Fourth Grade Famous Floridians

Fourth Grade Famous Floridians

Our fourth grade students studied famous Floridians to conclude their section on Florida history. Each student chose a famous Floridian and presented their research project to their classmates and guests dressed as their famous Floridian at their “Living Museum” on May 23.  Thirty-two fourth graders filled the warehouse and parents, guests, and students learned about the lives of these amazing Floridians.  A few of our famous guests were Chris Evert, Henry Flager, and Sally Ride.  Brooke, who researched Glenda Hood, was able to interview her at her home.

Annie Jr. A Success!

Congratulations to the cast members of “It’s Showtime” middle school music elective, for their performances in “Annie, Jr.” on May 22. The students worked hard preparing for auditions, designing sets and costumes, and learning music and choreography.  The show was a great success! The students did a wonderful job and thank everyone for their support and encouragement throughout the semester.

Sixth Grade Class Trip

Sixth grade students participated in a three-day Pathfinder program at Cedarkirk camp in Lithia, Florida. They learned how to better cooperate with diverse groups of their peers to accomplish many challenging tasks. They also spent quality time in nature hiking, climbing trees and wading in creeks. Students participated in simulations of settling Florida in the 1800’s and the Underground Railroad. Each night finished with friends gathered around the campfire.

Second Grade Studies Animals

Second grade students ended their year-long study of animals with a research project, diorama and trip to the Central Florida Zoo. The students each chose an animal that interested them, and researched its habitat, food, and other facts about the animal. They each created a diorama showing the habitat of their animals, and presented the information and diorama to the class. On May 14, they enjoyed a field trip to the Central Florida Zoo to see some of these animals up close; the culminating experience to celebrate their hard work.

Technology Update

Our school-wide technology upgrade initiative is well underway. Two new iPad carts arrived this week; each will house 18 new iPads to be shared by our lower school students. More technology improvements are in the works including a Chromebook for each middle school student next fall and an enhanced public address system. We are in the process of upgrading our WiFi and our middle school teachers have begun to use their own Chromebooks ahead of their students. Many thanks to our generous parents and supporters who contributed to this initiative through the Mane Event paddle raise along with a matching gift from the Earl K. Wood estate.  Stay tuned for more updates on the improvements to the technology at TCS!

5th Graders Visit the Capitol

The 5th graders traveled to Tallahassee to explore our state’s capital.  Students began with a visit back in time to a Spanish & Apalachee Mission, and then discovered the differences between the old and new capitol buildings.  Students were able to see our government in action by observing the very active Senate as they debated and voted during the last days in session.  Many students even got to meet Florida Governor Rick Scott, and celebrate the National Day of Prayer on television!  TCS students and chaperones ventured into the Florida History Museum and the Tallahassee Junior Museum before completing their trip at Wakulla Springs State Park.  More than anything else, the students let the light of Christ shine through their words and actions.  It was a great trip, filled with fun and learning!

3rd Grade Studies Countries

Our 3rd grade students have been learning about different countries, and have been participating in a variety of activities to enhance their learning. To further explore the diverse nations, they recently traveled to Epcot, where each student received stamps on a passport as they explored each country. Afterward, they will complete a writing activity about their Epcot experience. The students have also been using technology and books to gather information to create a brochure, a globe, and a tri-fold board, which will be displayed with food from their particular country at their International Fare on May 21.

Exploring Social Studies & Science

7th grade students took a Social Studies and Science field trip to the Holocaust Museum and Tampa Aquarium on April 29.  They had the privilege of hearing the story of a survivor from the Kindertransport, one of the last trains out of Austria before the outbreak of the Second World War that took 10,000 children to safety into England.  At the Tampa Aquarium, they went on a scavenger hunt, where they had the opportunity to touch sting rays and horse shoe crabs, and explore a variety of sea creatures.

Fifth Graders Discover Idioms

Fifth graders were on a roll, being teacher’s pets and hitting the books as they played with idioms this week.  After reading A Chocolate Moose for Dinner by Fred Gwen, they were inspired to brainstorm more idioms and colloquialisms to write and illustrate their own book.   The discovery of hundreds of idioms in our everyday language has impressed and challenged the students to find even more!  Hold onto your hats…the fifth graders have found idioms to be a piece of cake!!

6th Grade Snorkling Field Trip

6th grade students snorkeled the Rainbow River near Dunnellon on Monday, April 14. This field trip gave students an opportunity to observe real freshwater springs, as they had learned about during Earth Science this year. They also saw a baby snapping turtle, a slider, a large soft shell turtle and many fish. Later, while enjoying the swimming hole, an anhinga joined the students for a swim! The students will complete their unit study by writing a narrative about their experience, combining the science lesson with language development. Snorkelers were accompanied by Mrs. Kleinsteuber and Mrs. Marvin.

Technology Update

Technology improvements at The Christ School are underway!  Many thanks to our generous parents and supporters who contributed to this initiative through a paddle raise at the Mane Event, and through designated gifts received after the event.  Over $50,000 was raised to match $50,000 reserved from an estate gift given to The Christ School from the late Earl K. Wood.  We have ordered our new WiFi hardware, which will greatly enhance our students’ and teachers’ access to the internet.  We have purchased seven Chromebooks for our Middle School classroom teachers, so they can become familiar with this new technology in time for the new school year.  Next to come are more Chromebooks; one for every middle school student for the upcoming school year.  Two new iPad carts are on their way, each with 18 new iPads to be shared by our lower school students.  Stay tuned for more updates on the many school-wide improvements to our TCS technology thanks to our generous donors!

Second Graders Experience Sensational Science and Social Studies Lessons

To enhance classroom botany and history lessons, second graders visited Harry P. Leu Gardens. There, they discovered how plants adapt to arid regions and tropical stream regions. They learned about butterflies and how specific plants will attract various species. Within the garden is a home built in 1888. Many comparisons were made between life then and life now as the children toured this lovely dwelling. Memories of a fabulous, fun morning in the gardens will not fade.

Our students are enjoying the Spring Book Fair and are picking many exciting new books to read over the summer. The Book Fair continues through this Friday, April 11. Inspirational Speaker at March 20 Chapel

The Christ School welcomes Kelsey Beck as chapel speaker on March 20.  A Harvard student who was recently crowned Miss Winter Garden, Kelsey is the founder of  Mentoring for Life.  Kelsey is excited to talk to our students about her passion for mentoring.  “As a Christian, I have benefited tremendously in my walk with the Lord through having mentors guide me, rebuke me, and encourage me,” says Kelsey. “I want to be that mentor for young people all over the country.  Mentoring-4-Life is my passion and I hope that through my platform,  lives can be impacted and positively changed.  Whether or not mentoring is your ‘thing,’ I challenge you to find your purpose, develop your passion, and pursue it whole-heartedly.  I try to live by my life verse, ‘Those to whom much is given, much is expected.’  I’ve been given so much, and it is that much more important for me to give back and inspire those around me.”

If you didn’t have a chance to purchase your child’s photo on a 45, they are available in The Christ School office for $10 each. If you would like to contribute to our $50,000 matching gift challenge for technology improvements at TCS, please contact Director of Advancement, Joanne Fleming.  We have a small gap that needs to be filled and you can help!  This campaign will allow our students to benefit from a $100,000 technology upgrade:

  • Two additional IPad carts for lower school
  • Chrome books for each middle school student
  • A new WiFi system throughout the school
  • Technology professional development for our TCS faculty
  • An enhanced public address system

We are The Christ School because of our amazing community of supporters!  Thank you for helping us advance the mission.

2nd Grade Explores the USA with Flat Stanley

2nd Grade Explores the USA with Flat Stanley

TCS 2nd grade Lions have been learning about geography, social studies, math, literature and creativity with Flat Stanley, a literary character who is known for his extensive travels and adventures.  The students created their own Flat Stanley, and then took a trip to the post office to mail him to friends or family members throughout the United States. The recipients of the Flat Stanleys are encouraged to show their Flat Stanley around the area in which they live, and to document his trip with photos and stories about his adventures.  Then, they will mail these figures back to the students with the photos and souvenirs from their travels to help the students learn about different places in the USA.  The Flat Stanley project is a fun and engaging TCS tradition that inspires students to learn more about various geographical locations and cultures.
