TK-2nd Basketball Clinic
The last class of the five-week session is Thursday, February 27, 3:30-4:05 pm in the gym.

Fourth grade students have been learning about the Physical Properties of Matter. To review what they had studied, they played a game of “What’s in the Box?” Their teacher, Miss Thomas, placed an object in a box that had holes in its sides so a participant could reach in and touch the object. Dr. Farrant joined in the lesson to model how to fully describe an object’s physical properties. The room was filled with excitement and giggles as he reached in the box, described the properties of the object, and tried to guess what it was! The students then took turns describing and guessing objects by using their sense of touch. This activity was a fun and memorable way to reinforce their lessons.

Did you know that TCS has an active chapter of National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)? NJHS is open to rising 7th and 8th grade students who maintain a 3.75 cumulative GPA in the current school year. NJHS elevates a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their academic accomplishments but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. As such, NJHS chapters and students are in schools that care not only about student achievement, but also community engagement. NJHS students and their peers volunteer in their communities at the highest rates and make connecting with and serving within the community a priority. The Christ School chapter has currently contributed this year:

• 300 hours of school/community service
• $500+ in charitable donations to The School of Nazaret in the Dominican Republic
• 27 Thanksgiving baskets of food to local causes

And the school year is not over yet!

TCS National Junior Honor Society members have been presented with an opportunity to apply for the 2019-20 Outstanding Achievement Award which recognizes them for exemplary leadership and rewards them with $500 in a 529 college savings plan!

Basketball Clinic
The next class of the five week session will be held on Thursday, February 6, 3:30-4:05 pm in the gym.

Middle school Coding and Robotics students are learning about robotics engineering and how robots are designed to accomplish specific tasks. They were challenged to choose a task for a robot to perform in extremely cold conditions and design and create a prototype, concentrating on the task the robot was supposed to accomplish. The tasks included taking photos and temperatures of locations in Antarctica, taking temperature measurements in the refrigerators and freezers in commercial kitchens or going into oil tanks to check for leaks. After they created their prototype designs, the students presented them to their classmates.

TCS 7^th grade student, Miller Phillips, acted on his interest in learning more about serving his community through civic engagement by volunteering as a page in the Florida House of Representatives. He was selected to join 19 fellow pages from around the state to take part in a variety of educational activities, including in-depth tours of historic landmarks, drafting a bill and presenting it in a mock committee meeting, observing a live legislative committee meeting, and serving as a page on the House floor during session. Miller enjoyed meeting with several House members and government leaders. Additionally, Miller was able to take part in advocacy efforts on behalf of children’s issues. Miller said, “This experience helped put what I am learning in civics class into real life.”  We give a Lion’s Roar to Miller for his initiative and hard work!

TCS TK-2nd grade students have been learning about how 3D printing works. They discovered that the printing filament is melted and laid down in layers, forming the objects made by the printer. To demonstrate how this works, the students rolled out thin ropes of play-dough to simulate filament, and then they laid down the play-dough strips the same way a 3D printer would to make a cup or bowl using this method. The students then designed a toothpaste tube squeezer to print using the 3D printer. To show them how the printer would do this, they took ropes of play-dough and formed the shapes that will be crafted in the 3D printed object.

In the fall, the 5th grade students worked on developing strong persuasive letters and arguments. The teachers shared the letters with Dr. Farrant and one of them, written by Charlotte, was particularly impressive and caught his eye. Her letter was about dress code and Dr. Farrant invited Charlotte to meet and discuss this further. While there were some proposed changes that were not able to be implemented, Dr. Farrant did see merit in one of her suggestions. Today, the lower school enjoyed a special casual day thanks to Charlotte’s persuasive techniques.

TCS 8^th grade students and chaperones are in the Dominican Republic on their mission trip this week, the capstone experience in their TCS journey. In addition to meeting children and families in the village of Cielo, they have split into groups to work on houses for families in need. They have been mixing and pouring concrete, sanding, priming, and painting walls, and more. TCS dad, Ben Staat, writes, “Today we poured concrete headers on Wendy’s house. She and her family live in a shack with no bathroom. This new house is a really big deal for her family. She and her husband have two young girls and it felt really good to help them.” This trip has been an amazing opportunity for our students to experience another country and serve others from a completely different walk of life. It is sure to be a rewarding, memorable week, and we are excited to hear their stories when they get back! Enjoy photos on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

This past Saturday was an exciting day for our girls’ basketball team – tournament day! The girls played incredibly well and we are excited to share that they brought home the second place trophy! Way to Roar Lions! Congratulations to both our middle school teams and their coaches for representing TCS with the heart of a LION out on the courts.

Third grade students have been “on the ball” as they learn about figurative language and the use of idioms. Through interactive activities and reading stories that incorporate idioms within the text, the students have enjoyed discovering how idioms can enhance ideas. To “wrap their heads around” this subject, the students will participate in an idiom parade through the lower school hallways on Thursday, January 30, dressed as an idiom!  They will “keep their idioms under their hats” and the classes watching the parade will “keep their eyes peeled” and try to guess which idiom each student is representing. What idioms will they choose? “Your guess is as good as mine!”

The 8th grade Bible students have embarked on a journey through the book Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations. The book was written by two teenage Christian brothers who found that when they put their mind to something big, they could do more than they had imagined. The message promotes a growth mindset and challenges teenagers to rise above what society expects of them. The book includes stories of teenagers who have accomplished great things to God’s glory. Our students have had great conversations in class, and are encouraged to aspire to do hard things in high school and beyond.

Where can you develop leadership, organization and public speaking skills, learn more about Biblical lessons, discover the many aspects of production, and have fun? The Christ School’s middle school chapel elective class! Seventh grade student, Jennifer, reflects on her experience in the class: “This is an awesome elective where you can learn how much planning goes into an event and develop great skills that you will use your whole life. Before being in this elective, I didn’t know how much work went into planning chapel every day and let me say, it’s a lot! We have so much work to do each week to make sure chapel on Thursdays runs smoothly. We make a slideshow, find a speaker, find songs for middle school to sing, and ask people to do prayers, pledges, and the passage every week!  Last semester, I had so much fun with our teacher, Mrs. Townsend, and my classmates. This semester, Mrs. Hoyer is taking the lead. I am excited to have a new experience with another teacher and have more people join our team. I love this class because it teaches great leadership skills by giving students the responsibility to work with a deadline and solve problems quickly. Last semester, my classmates and I had to deal with situations where we had to solve the problem fast and neatly. I am so thankful for Mrs. Townsend and Mrs. Hoyer for teaching me how to be a leader, and I am so thankful for such a wonderful elective.”

TCS 2^nd grade students have been learning about habitats. To help develop research, organization and presentation skills, they are working on a habitat mobile project, which will include information about the environment, plants and animals found in the student’s chosen habitat. The students were encouraged to choose a habitat that they are not familiar with so they can expand their knowledge. Once their project is complete, the students will present their mobile and habitat research findings to their class.

At the end of this month, TCS middle school students are going on their class trips! Each trip is an extension of their academic and service-centered middle school experience. Sixth grade students will travel to Fruitland Park, FL, to participate in activities that promote unity and team-building as a foundation for serving others. Seventh grade students will travel to Quincy, FL. There, they will share Christ through service to people in that community. This challenging and rewarding trip provides a great foundation for the eighth grade trip. Eighth grade students will travel to the Dominican Republic. During this capstone trip, they will encounter and explore a foreign country, serve others from a completely different walk of life, and exemplify Christ through service alongside their friends, teachers, and parents. We pray that our students will learn and grow from these meaningful and valuable experiences!

The development of our students’ social intelligence is an important part of their education at TCS. One way to do this is to give them purposeful time to practice the skills of good sportsmanship, working cooperatively, respecting personal space, and emotional regulation. When teachers give them competitive challenges in the confines of the classroom, they can discuss a skill then immediately practice it.  In Compass/Social Bridges, 4th grade students have been practicing by playing a game of table hockey where some students were referees, some were goalies, and some were moving players. Giving the students purposeful activities that can cause the bigger feelings of excitement, nervousness, and maybe even frustration allows them to practice bringing those bigger feelings back down to “just right.”

Middle School sign ups are open for our Spring Track and Field season.
Track meets will be held on Mondays at 4:00 pm starting February 24.
The season ends with the Championship Meet on March 30.
Practice days will be Mondays and Wednesdays starting February 5, 4:45-6:00 pm at Boone High School.
The first practice will be an orientation on February 3, 3:30-4:30 pm in the gym.

4th and 5th grade girls’ and boys’ and 3rd grade co-ed basketball registration is open and will end on January 31. Registration includes uniform, 6 games plus playoffs. Play begins February 8 and continues through March 28. The games will be played at Ace School located Downtown. Practice location and times will be determined as teams are formed. Registration is online at Legacy Youth Sports. A TCS Hold Harmless Form is required. Please note: a one $35 Athletic fee will be charged to your FACTS account.

First grade students got their tickets and boarded their class airplanes to learn about holidays around the world. As they landed in each country, they explored the landmarks, money, animals, food and Christmas traditions. The students visited England, Australia, Mexico, Israel, Sweden, Greece and Germany. They headed to the beach in Australia where Christmas falls in the summertime. In Mexico, they learned that poinsettias are the Christmas flower. They also learned that Jewish people around the world celebrate Hanukkah. Our world travelers are ready to celebrate Christmas in America!

Sixth grade students have been studying ancient Egypt. As they learned about the daily life of the ancient Egyptians, the students discovered that religion was the focal point of their lives. To conclude this unit of study, the students researched the religious burial rites of the ancient Egyptians and worked in groups to make Lego creations of pyramids, canopic jars, funary boats, burial chambers and sarcophagi. Using their research and photos of their creations, each group created a slide presentation which they used to teach their classmates about their projects. Some students were inspired to create additional Egyptian models at home!

Spirit Day!
Our winter sports season has begun and it is time to introduce our winter athletes and celebrate with the second Spirit Day of the year. Wear your TCS colors along with your festive Christmas accessories!  Please join us for Spirit Day this Friday, December 13, 2:15 pm in the gym. Spirit Day will be followed by an FCA Huddle for middle school. Let’s Roar Lions!

Esta semana y la semana que viene, los estudiantes de la escuela elemental van a diseñar tarjetas de navidad con un mensaje especial para sus padres. También, van a aprender a cantar villancicos tradicionales como Mi Burrito Sabanero y explorar cómo se celebra la navidad en España y la América Latina.

This week and next, lower school Spanish students are creating Christmas cards with a special holiday message in Spanish for their parents.  They are also learning to sing traditional Christmas carols like Mi Burrito Sabanero and exploring how Christmas is celebrated in Spain and Latin America.

TCS 8th grade students attended Physics Day at Busch Gardens to experience physics in action. In addition to being able to encounter many properties of physics on the rides, the students visited interactive physics stations located around the park where they learned about non-newtonian fluids and the use of magnets in the braking systems of the roller coasters. The students viewed a live physics interactive show presented by a college professor, and TCS student, Cameron Reynolds was chosen to participate!  It was a great experience for the students that allowed them to answer the age-old question of, “when am I ever going to use this?”
