TCS 4^th grade Compass students are being challenged by responding to questions that make them think about how they perceive the world, themselves and others. These young scholars are learning to think critically and creatively as they express themselves through writing. They have also been participating in literary circles where they verbally share their writings and give each other feedback. Once everyone has had an opportunity to edit their work, the students will choose a few of their favorites to illustrate, and have them compiled into a published class book!

Shaky Manor – The Tilted Treasure Hunt (this is a 4 player game where each person holds a “Manor” so you could buy 2 if you have a big family). In this game, race to position your Meeple Player and 2 Treasure Chests into the room indicated on the Challenge Card by shaking and tilting your box.  From Blue Orange Games.

Double Ditto – The Game of Quick Thinking and Clever answers. You can play for a few minutes or for hours! (3 players to 10+ players!) It says ages 10 and up but you can probably play with some children who are a little younger. You can find this at InspirationPlay.com

Djubi Sling Ball Junior – Hook it, Launch It, Catch It!  This is an outdoor game and comes with two launchers and two sling balls. Ages 5 and up. From Blue Orange Games (There are also other similar versions for different ages).  2 players.  

Clouds – Clouds is a matching game that’s perfect to entertain the wildest of imaginations and comes in a cute and easy to “take along” container.  From Blue Orange Games. Ages 4 and up. 1+ players.

Wits and Wagers, Family Edition – Take a guess and score points by choosing whose guess is closest. How many sesame seeds are on a Whopper bun?  With easy rules and exciting game play, Wits & Wagers Family will get the whole family/party cheering and laughing together.  Ages 6 and Up, 3+ players, and can be played as individuals or as teams.  

7th grade science students have been learning about the nervous system and the neurons that communicate information to the brain, which include sensory neurons, interneurons, and motor neurons. The students created a two-point discrimination test, similar to what neurologists use, to measure and graph the sensory information on their classmates.  A two-point discrimination test reveals the patient’s ability to discern that two nearby objects touching the skin are truly two distinct points, not one.  This test reflects how finely innervated an area of skin is on a specific part of the body. Using this test, the students were able to ascertain that their fingertips are more heavily innervated than their forehead.

8^th grade American History students have been discussing the American Revolution. This week, they participated in a “gallery walk” in which they traveled around the classroom, read information and noted key facts posted about the different battles that took place. The students are using their notes and knowledge to create their own google map of the battles they are exploring. Each battle location on their map will include graphics and a detailed paragraph that describes not only the events that took place, but an explanation of the importance of each of these battles.

Get your cardigans ready! During the month of November, our 6th grade students are learning about the life and lessons of Mr. Rogers. Through reading, writing, presentations, and acts of kindness, students are exploring the gentleness and wisdom of this legendary public television figure. This interdisciplinary thematic unit reaches across language arts, Bible, and science classes with interconnected, thoughtful lessons. Some highlights will include the investigation of truisms, distinguishing reality from make-believe, interpretation of symbols, and the biblical connotation of the word neighbor. They will wrap up the themed lessons with a kindness challenge during “Red Sweater Week” and look forward to a class field trip to see the feature film “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.”  Students and teachers alike are “growing on the inside” as they explore and revisit the compassion and understanding of Mr. Rogers. We pray that the goodness of these lessons will weave into the fabric of our 6th grade students and throughout our middle school.

Our 5^th grade classrooms have been transformed into surgical rooms. “Drs. Forbes and DiBiase” have been creating memorable learning experiences through themed lessons this week. All of their activities are helping to reinforce their study of the human body.  Science lessons have included researching diseases and infections, sorting organs into their proper body systems, and investigating patient profiles; identifying which organs have been impacted and predicting the recommendations a doctor may give. Today they collaborated with 7^th grade science students to build a model of a lung!  Math lessons have included working with hospital scenarios to calculate mean, median, mode and range, and referencing a hospital supply list to fulfill orders to review the addition and multiplication of decimals. In Language Arts, the students are exploring character traits, commas, and context clues. To deepen their lesson, TCS parents and friends in the medical field visited the classrooms to share their expertise. It’s great to be a TCS Lion!

TCS first grade students have been learning about community helpers. They have explored the different roles people have in our community and how they help others. To enhance their lesson, TCS parents have visited the classrooms to share their roles in our community. Dr. Richard Carter explained his role as a pharmacist, Judge Chiu shared about his experiences as a member of the judiciary, Dr. Leigh Harris shared information about being a physical therapist, and our own Mr. Noto shared about being a principal. This week and next, a police officer, nurse anesthetist, firefighter, commissioner, area president of a home construction company, and a construction worker will be sharing how they help make our community better.

TCS winter sports are off and running. Our middle school teams are working hard and will begin their competition season right before and after Thanksgiving. Our games will be listed here in the newsletter. Join us for a game and support your Lions!

Several middle school students wanted to deepen their critical thinking skills, so they formed a critical thinking group, led by Mr. Davis and Mr. Nelson. The group meets every Friday during lunch to discuss Biblical themes and current world issues. Each week, they discuss different topics, often pulling out the Bible to get a Biblical perspective on the topic at hand. At the conclusion of the meeting, they determine the topic for the next week so they can research and gain perspective for the next discussion. New members are welcome!  If your middle school child is interested in joining the group, ask them to contact Mr. Davis or Mr. Nelson.

TCS families may know Shelby Shannon as a cheerful substitute teacher who assisted in our classrooms last year. This year, she has moved into a bigger role: Assistant to the Academic Office. “In my new role, I assist the academic directors and curriculum specialist with many administrative tasks, as well as help the teachers with anything they need,” she says. “They are all very busy in their roles and I am happy to be able to take on a lot of the day-to-day tasks that help to make the school day run smoothly.”

“I enjoy working at TCS,” she says. “It is fun to get to know the children. They are so joyful and I enjoy seeing their smiles throughout the day.”

Shelby grew up in Orlando with her two younger sisters. “A fun fact about me is that my family owns a restaurant here in town called Shannon’s Café,” she says. “My fiance, Nathan Dunlap, graduated from TCS in 2008. We met at our church where his mom runs the children’s ministries. His son, who is 4, will be a TCS Lion next year! We love to go to Disney together.  I also love fishing and going to the beach,” she says.

Miss Thomas and her 4th grade students have been listening to worship songs during their snack time, and decided to dive deeper into a particular favorite. “I try to integrate God into everything we do,” she says. “I share worship songs from a variety of cultures and genres. We listen to worship songs in different languages (with subtitles), contemporary, gospel, Christian Hip-Hop, you name it! It’s my special time with them every day! When I heard Build My Life at church a month ago, I couldn’t wait to share it with them. I found a tutorial on how to do a blended sign language version of it, and we learned it together. Lately, we’ve been talking about the deeper meaning of the song and what a huge commitment it is to sing to the Lord that we will build our lives upon HIS love!’ This song is so special.” Miss Thomas and her students performed the sign language lyrics in Chapel on Monday. TCS welcomes Michael Saxton, former TCS Lion, as our middle school chapel speaker on Thursday, October 31. “I am very excited to share a message that God has put on my heart. I hope the students enjoy it,” he says. Michael attended The Christ School from 1st – 6th grade in 2001-2007. Michael shares that TCS was a huge part of his future success as he grew in his love for Basketball and God during his time here. Michael’s faith has been a foundation for him throughout high school and college, where he was Chaplain of Lake Highland Prep, and a member of the 2012 State Runner-Up Basketball team. Michael went on to play college basketball where he was a team member of the Division 1 Florida State Men’s Basketball team from 2014-2016. While at FSU, Michael led worship at FCA and was actively involved in the Church. Michael is married to wife Alyssa, who is attending Medical School at the University of Florida. They currently live in Gainesville.

TCS lower school STEAM classes are building putt putt golf games using cardboard and recycled materials. The students created obstacles and decorated a putt putt golf hole based on a theme selected and voted on by their class. Middle school STEAM students also created putt putt games that were on display at the cornhole tournament this past Friday. These projects served as an inspiration for our lower school students who are currently working on this project. The students are learning that making a detailed plan helps tremendously, especially when working in a large group. This project has been an important opportunity for students to collaborate as a team and to employ their problem-solving skills in a fun and creative way.

This is a time in which teachers and students meet and connect with one another. Each Wednesday, the groups meet during chapel time for devotions and prayer and to bond with one another. Students and teachers alike look forward to this important time together. Their focus this year is “Purpose.” What is my purpose? What can I learn from this experience? What can I learn from someone else’s stories? Who am I? And, who am I in Christ? Ultimately, we are created uniquely and perfectly by God, there are no mistakes and we were designed with intentional “purpose.”

Each week, scripture and relevant stories are shared to recharge the students’ passions and renew their hope in the promises of God. The stories and prayers that are shared enrich their walk with Christ. Advisory provides a safe space to ask even the hardest of life’s questions.

Sixth grade world history students have been exploring the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia. Through articles, videos and activities, they investigated the ancient inventions of irrigation and the wheel and the foundations of the first writing system – cuneiform. Through their research, they discovered that scribes in ancient Mesopotamia were few and they were highly-skilled writers who documented history for the first time. After students completed their research, they translated phrases into cuneiform and recorded them onto handmade clay tablets.

We are happy to welcome Susan Bender to The Christ School team! Susan joins us this year as our afternoon front desk receptionist. Susan is the mom of TCS 1^st grade Lion, Liam, and 23 year old Joshua. She has been married for 10 years to Garreth, who works for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. “Liam describes me well when he tells everyone that ‘my mom lives on coffee and chocolate,’” Susan smiles. “I love to go to Anna Maria Island to have some beach time with my family. We also enjoy camping,” she says.

“When I learned about the receptionist position, I knew right away that I wanted to fill the role,” says Susan. “Everyone here is so friendly and happy.”

“I really enjoy working at the front desk,” Susan continues. “The kids are happy to be here. Being able to see the everyday happenings at the school is so much fun.  I loved The Christ School before but seeing how things go on a day to day basis makes me love TCS even more! The best part of my job is getting to see my son throughout the day. He blows me kisses and gives me air hugs from the hallway. It is something I will cherish forever.”

“I am happy that Liam is at TCS.  I want him to make life-long friendships here, and for TCS to help him mature spiritually, physically and academically,” says Susan.

Susan shares her favorite Bible verse: John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. “This verse reminds me of my dad,” She says.

Third grade students are exploring energy and motion. To help them visualize these concepts, they analyzed images of golfing, roller coasters, and weightlifting and discussed which image represented the use of the greatest amount of energy. Following the visual analysis, they conducted an experiment in which they released marbles down an inclined plane and measured the distance the marbles traveled. Afterward, they considered ways to make the marble travel further – would increasing the slope of the inclined plane or using a heavier marble work? The experiments continued!

Our middle school Houses have been given a STEAM challenge for their next competition! They are working in groups to design protective containers that can hold an egg and allow it to survive a drop out of a second or third floor window. To add to the challenge, they are only allowed to use select materials in their design. Whose container will win the challenge? We will find out at the Egg Drop on October 31!

Ashley Muniz, kindergarten assistant, has been thriving in her new role at TCS. Our parents may remember Ashley in her role as a REACH mentor. “I have a degree in Criminal Justice, but knew I wanted to work with children. Working with REACH was so much fun. I enjoyed meeting the students, interacting, helping and playing games with them while being a positive role model,” says Ashley.

“I love my new role as kindergarten assistant,” Ashley continues. “I have opportunities to help both the students and teachers. I love sharing the knowledge I learned from my teachers with the students. I am very thankful for my teachers, and for the ones here at TCS.”

“I love how TCS is a family. Everyone looks out for others, and the students brighten up each day!  I love seeing how happy they are as they learn. I learn new things from them, too.”

Ashley grew up in the Bronx in New York. “I am of Hispanic heritage; my parents are from Puerto Rico and moved to New York when they were young,” she says. “Growing up, whenever I visited Florida, I would wish that I could live here, and I finally moved here this past January. A few fun facts about me are that I started baton twirling and cheerleading for a marching band at the age of 4, and continued until I was 18. I met a lot of talented people and participated in many parades. I also played softball as a 2nd baseman in high school. During my senior year, we won all the games in our division! I’m also a huge Yankees fan.”

Ashley shares her favorite Bible verse: Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. – Isaiah 41:10

Seventh grade Language Arts students explored two poems that focus on the topic of choice, “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost and “Choices” by Nikki Giovanni, and analyzed the two narrators’ reflections about choices. They considered what the authors can teach us about choices and how they might apply this new knowledge to their own lives, especially as 7th grade students who are not far removed from new choices made in middle school and to the bigger choices soon to be made as they transition into high school. Throughout the year, the students will journey through fiction and nonfiction to analyze how choices impact them in their daily lives and how they can prepare for the future.

Cross Country
God provided a wonderful breeze and… The boys placed 4th…. only lost out 3rd by 2 pts.  Garland Ingram took 3rd place with Eli Carnes coming in 16th as our second runner.

The girls shaved off a lot of time and had PR’s for nearly everyone on the team!  Ashley Hale came in 15th as our top runner and the team landed in 4th place!

Seventh grade science students have been studying viruses.  As part of their lesson, they were presented with a challenge: to work in groups to construct a working model of a virus that will help teach younger students. Through the process of creating their model, the older students learned that by taking a complex idea and putting it into a simpler form for younger students to understand, they were able to better understand it themselves.  Once the models were complete, they had a wonderful time sharing them with our kindergarten students!

First grade students have been learning about tall tales and Johnny Appleseed. The students engaged in reading, writing, and math centers based on apples. On September 26th, Johnny’s birthday, they had a surprise visit from the legend himself!  Mr. Appleseed delivered apples to the students who taste-tested and graphed their favorite apple, weighed the apples, made apple pie in a cup and used their senses to describe apples. It was an exciting week full of apple fun.
