A Passion for Teaching

Meredith Gibbs has touched the lives of each of our TCS students through her engaging and interactive creative thinking class, Compass. “In Compass, I ask the students to embrace challenge,” Meredith says. “Our challenges are always thinking skills such as logic, reasoning, quick thinking, listening, and creative play. This year, I’m also thoroughly enjoying teaching a group of 3rd and 4th grade students 5th grade math! It’s an exciting part of my day for sure!”

Meredith grew up in Orlando, attended college in Raleigh, NC, and then earned her teaching degree at UCF. “I met my husband when I wanted to attempt a swing dance flip and needed a really strong guy to try it,” she smiles. She and her husband, Jason, have twin children, Josh and Lily, who are both in 4th grade at TCS. “My family loves the outdoors. Some of our favorite activities are paddle boarding, mountain biking, hiking and identifying ‘specimens’ we find in the wild.”

“I love teaching at TCS,” she says. “I feel like The Christ School is a place with a Christ-led vision, a school with passion, and a place for our students to experience growth and love. My favorite things about my job at TCS are the cheers when I tell my students what challenge I’m giving their class that week!  My favorite part of the day is walking to chapel and getting tons of hugs from my students.”

“TCS is a wonderful place for my children because I know that they are being taught to be lifelong learners,” she says. “Both Josh and Lily have been blessed with teachers who love to teach and this makes them excited to learn.  They are learning problem solving skills, how to communicate effectively, and how to think creatively. They are learning that God is a part of all of life, not just during church.  This knowledge will help both in their personal and professional lives.”

Meredith shares one of her favorite Bible verses:
“Your Majesty,” he said, “this Philistine shouldn’t turn us into cowards. I’ll go out and fight him myself.” – 1 Samuel 17:32

“As my students know, I have the bust of David statue in my room,” Meredith says. “It represents that moment when David made that decision.  He was doing his job, though minor, a necessary job. He saw a need that needed to be met. He was small and young but courageous. He was picked on by larger peers for asking questions. He rose to the challenge. He believed in himself and the God who came before him.  He was successful.  There isn’t a much better story of Growth Mindset than that!”

Meredith adds, “What an amazing start to the year with Mr. Farrant at the wheel!”

Inspiring Students

Did you know that TJ Ross, TCS 7th and 8th grade Math and Robotics teacher, is a veteran? While earning his bachelor’s degree in Middle-Childhood Education from Kent State University, he served in the Army National Guard and continued to serve while starting his career, teaching middle school math in Washington D.C. “I sincerely enjoyed and appreciated all I was able to do and learn throughout my time in the Army,” he says. “Their Core Values – Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage – are still to this day ingrained in me”

TJ moved to Orlando in 2013 and has been teaching at TCS for 4 years. On weekends, you will find him spending time with his wife, Elizabeth, and two-year-old daughter, Riley.

“My favorite thing about teaching at TCS is bridging the preconceived gap between math and a Christian worldview,” says TJ. “Our God is one of order. Math helps us to better understand the divine order God orchestrates through all things.”

Currently, TJ is pursuing a Master of Arts in Leadership at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts. “The Educational Leadership program is tailored for those interested in independent school administration,” he says. “After graduation, I aspire to become a middle school principal and then one day lead as a Head of School.”

TJ shares his favorite Bible verse:
May the words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. – Psalm 19:14

Talented Teacher

Lucretia McCall joined The Christ School as a second grade teacher last year, after serving as a teacher at OCPS for 13 years.  “My favorite thing about teaching at TCS is the warm and loving environment,” she says. “There is such a sense of family in the classrooms, in the staff, and within our TCS parents.”

“The best part of my job at TCS is my students!” Lucretia continues. “I love watching my students grow in their learning over the school year. I love to see where they start and how far they go by the end of the year.”

In addition to being a talented and engaging teacher, Lucretia has a flair for crafting. You may have noticed a few of her beautiful and colorful wreaths brightening the hallways of our school. “I love making wreaths, she says. “It started as a creative outlet and turned into a little business. I love creating things.”

Lucretia and her husband, David, have been married for 17 years. Their son, Seth, is a TCS student in 7th grade. “We are so blessed to be a part of The Christ School family,” she says.

Lucretia shares her favorite Bible verse:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. – Proverbs 3: 5-6

Spotlight on: 7th Grade Volleyball Coach Chat Ricchi

How do you feel about coaching at TCS?  It’s very rewarding! Practicing, competing, and growing every season with these great students has been amazing.

What is your favorite thing about coaching volleyball?  My favorite thing about coaching volleyball is getting to see firsthand the growth of the team year in and year out. To see that is extraordinary and one of my highlights of coaching.

Do you have any goals that you hope to achieve this year?  Every year has the same goal: getting better at your skill and your position, individually and as a teammate. It doesn’t matter where you start; it matters where you are when you finish. That can only be measured by improving and getting better one step at a time.

What has been highlight for you as a coach? I think one of my favorite highlights has been when the girls were down in a match and they didn’t quit and give up and they make the comeback against all odds.

Sharing Her Artistic Passion

The Christ School welcomes our new Art teacher, Ashley Deluca.  Ashley earned her BA in Art History from the University of South Florida, and is excited to have the opportunity to share her love of art with our students.

Ashley and her husband, Danny, have two daughters, Venisa, who is in Mrs. Dodgion’s TK class, and Sophia, who is 22 months old. “I love reading, painting and being outdoors,” says Ashley. “As a family we frequent the splash pad, the Orlando Science Center and the beach!”

“Since I have started teaching at TCS I have found that the students and faculty really exude joy,” Ashley says. “This joy is my favorite thing about being a part of this school. I can tell that the culture of the school truly is Christ centered and I am honored to work as a part of this team.  I am enjoying this wonderful group of young artists in my classroom who are so imaginative and love to think creatively and independently. These skills are great to have in life; I love watching them flourish and take pride in their creations.”

Ashley shares her favorite Bible verse:
“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11

“This reminds me daily to let go of my fears and stress and just do my best! God has it under control and He has better plans than I could ever fathom,” says Ashley.

Welcome to Our TCS Family!

Russ Winderweedle, our new Technology Specialist, is a true Floridian.  “I was born and raised in Winter Park,” he says. “I am currently enjoying the single life with my Black Lab, Molly. I have always been close to my family. Both of my parents, my older brother, and niece live here in Orlando. I enjoy fishing with my dad and brother. In the evening after school you will either find me watching football on TV or playing video games.”

Russ attended Flagler College in St. Augustine and graduated with two degrees; one in Philosophy/Religion and the other in Social Science. He is a 1994 graduate of Reformed Theological Seminary and earned a Masters degree in Theological Studies. He holds to two professional certificates from Valencia College in Computer Network Technology and in Database Management.

Before joining TCS, Russ taught 5th grade at Saint Barnabas Episcopal School in Deland, and taught 9th – 12th grade World and American History and Economics at Mainland High School in Daytona Beach. “For the last year and a half, I was working for Houhton Mifflin Harcourt Publishers as a tech support agent for their online education websites. I started to feel that God was calling me to make a change in my employment. I started looking for a technology or teaching opportunity at a local Christian school and was excited to find the opportunity at TCS through FCIS,” says Russ.

“As The Christ School’s Technology Specialist, I am responsible for making sure that all things technology work and run as they should. I help the staff, teacher and students with any technology needs and assist with the audio and visual aspect of the chapel each morning,” he says. “My favorite thing about TCS is that we are all like one big family here. Every time that I walk into school, I see joy on the faces of the students and the staff.”

Russ shares his favorite Bible verses:

“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”- Jeremiah 29:11

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”- Romans12:2

A Friendly Greeting

With a warm greeting and a friendly smile, Amanda Gamble is the first to welcome everyone to The Christ School each day. Amanda, who serves as The Christ School’s receptionist, supports our students, parents, and staff from the minute they walk in the door. Throughout the day, Amanda does many tasks that help ensure our school day runs smoothly!

“I started working at TCS after I graduated from Boone High School in 2015,” says Amanda. “I worked in The Christ School’s REACH program for a year. Then I was asked if I would be interested in working at the front desk. I was excited about the opportunity to get to welcome everyone every day and help them with whatever they need. I am now in my third year working at TCS.”

“My favorite thing about working at TCS is getting to know the children,” Amanda says. “I have a special relationship with each one of them. I also love the community at The Christ School. Everyone is so supportive of one another; it’s like one big family. I have always lived with a big family, so I feel so at home at The Christ School.”

Amanda shares her favorite Bible verse:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11

Welcome Mark Davis

The Christ School is happy to welcome Mark Davis, who joined TCS this year as our 7th and 8th grade Biblical Worldview and Digital Media teacher. Although he recently joined our team, Mark has been a part of The Christ School family for some time. “I have been familiar with The Christ School for the past few years through my wife, Jessi, who taught Spanish and World Languages at TCS,” says Mark. “Throughout those years, I heard great things about the people at The Christ School, so I consider it a privilege to be working with them today.”

Mark grew up in Ponte Vedra and attended Nease High School (“Home of the one and only, Tim Tebow!” he says). He attended college in Kentucky where he met Jessi, and recently finished his studies at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando last May. Mark and Jessi have a son, Oakley, who is ten months old. “My wife and I are always finding new adventures,” says Mark. “We love to camp, travel, and try new foods.”

“My favorite thing about teaching at TCS is the warm, joyful environment,” he says. “I probably see hundreds of smiles every day, and I truly believe we are a blessed bunch.”

He continues, “In my Biblical Worldview classes, I love to see students make personal connections with what they are learning. It’s humbling to know how much these classes will shape them, and it gives me a great sense of responsibility and purpose to serve them as their teacher.  In my Digital Media class, we have a blast creating and shooting TCS News. The first one will be finished soon. You’re in for a treat!”

Mark shares his favorite Bible verse:

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.”  – Ephesians 2:4-5

Always With a Smile

Known for her cheery disposition and kind heart, TCS Clinic Assistant, Donna MacNichol, has been a beloved member of The Christ School team since she began her role in 2009. An Orlando native, Donna graduated from Edgewater High School.  “After high school, I attended Valencia College on a full scholarship for voice,” says Donna.  “After two years, I realized I needed something else as I watched friends of mine go on to perform and travel. I knew that was not the life for me; I wanted to settle in a home with children. I could go on and finish my degree in teaching, but I didn’t see myself as a teacher at that time.  I decided to go to Medical Assisting School at Winter Park Vo. Tech, and graduated with honors. Afterward, I worked for a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon for two years, then at Pediatric Associates of Orlando until I became a mother.  I feel that working for these two types of doctors was part of God’s plan to bring me to The Christ School.  I learned a lot from both of them, and I am able to use that knowledge in my role here.”

“In 1995, I married my high school sweetheart, Nick,” she says. Together, they have two children, Zack, who attends UCF as a Mathematics Major with a minor in Creative Writing, and Ashlyn (TCS Class of 2017), a freshman in the Theatre Magnet program at Dr. Phillips High School. They also have three Boxers, Bella Layla, Zena Scarlet, and Rory Jane. “They bring so much joy to our home,” she says. Donna enjoys attending musical theater performances and spending time with her family.

“The best part of my job at TCS is taking care of my TCS children,” she says. “I love each of them as my own. They are my fuel each day. I love our conversations. I could write a book of things we talk about.”

Donna shares her favorite Bible verse, which she says changes with each season of her life.
1) If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. 2) If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. 3-7) If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.
                                                                           – 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (The Message Bible)

A Special Calling

TCS third grade teacher Caroline Knuth has had The Christ School in her heart for a long time.  Not only is she a teacher, but she is a TCS alumna! A graduate of The Christ School class of 2003, Caroline went on to Edgewater High School and then earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of North Florida.  “Growing up and going through grade school I admired all of my teachers,” says Caroline. “When I was little I would always play ‘school’ at home with my friends. I have always loved children and wanted to be in a field where I worked with them. After taking many classes in college and getting the hands on experience in classrooms, I knew teaching was my calling.”

After teaching in Orange and Pinellas County schools, Caroline is excited to be teaching at The Christ School this year. “My favorite thing about teaching at TCS is being able to praise Jesus every single day in school, whether it be at chapel or in the classroom,” she says. “The best thing about being part of The Christ School family is just feeling at home. Everyone has been so welcoming and wonderful. I love being able to work with the children. They all have such wonderful personalities and nothing is more gratifying to me than teaching them through God’s word. I truly believe children are the light and future of our world.

“Being back at TCS as a teacher has been such a blessing for me, Caroline continues. “It’s almost like I never left. I have really enjoyed catching up with teachers that were MY teachers when I was in school here. I feel so welcome here and couldn’t feel more at home.”

The Christ School Cross Country Team

Spotlight on Cross Country – Coach Laura Kerlek

How do you feel about coaching at TCS?
SO EXCITED!!! I was always involved in sports growing up with my dad and then when I raised my sons. Now that my sons are grown and have moved out, being a Coach fills that “empty spot” in my life by allowing me to be a part of athletics and sports!  Being a coach is rewarding as well as a blessing being able to watch young athletes make and achieve not only personal goals but team goals. Being a coach reminds me of some of the precious memories of the times I spent with my dad and sons.

What is your favorite thing about being here?
After teaching in Public School in Collier County for 16 years, when I moved to Orlando I was blessed to be hired by TCS. My favorite thing about teaching at TCS is being able to not only teach but to be able to talk about and discuss my faith and pray with my students! Spotlight on TCS head volleyball coach Lindsey Carter

How do you feel about coaching at TCS?  While it is a change of pace from high school varsity, it’s very refreshing to work with players that are in the beginning phase of their career.  I know what they are about to walk in to in high school so I feel honored to prepare them for that next big step.

What is your favorite thing about being here?  The student athletes are the best part of The Christ School. My team has great morals, hard working attitudes and eagerness to learn.  I love it!

Do you have any goals or ideas that you are hoping to achieve this year?  My main goal is to prepare these young ladies for their future.  If we win a championship along the way, that is just icing on the cake.

Tell us about the 8th grade team and the night you spent taking them out to a Boone HS volleyball match?  It was a really special night for me to take my new team to watch my former team play.  I was beaming with pride to see the strides my former team has made.  I was sure to share with the 8th grade how some of those girls on the court couldn’t serve over hand last year and now they are jump serving.  And some couldn’t play all the way around and now they do AND thrive, on a high school team.  Hard work pays off and it was very apparent that night.

How did the former TCS volleyball players respond to seeing the 8th grade team?  They were all smiles, very appreciative and eager to tell me about their new roles. The parents were thankful for our season last year and referenced it many times as a big part of the puzzle in their daughters growth.

Welcome Jennifer Raspallo

The Christ School is delighted to welcome Jennifer Raspallo as a first grade teacher this year. Jennifer has been teaching grades 1 – 3 for 18 years. She moved to Orlando when she was in the 4th grade, and graduated from Bishop Moore High School. She attended John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH, where she received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Elementary Education.

Jennifer and her husband, Matt, have two daughters who are TCS students: Madison, who is in the 4th grade, and Molly, who is in kindergarten. Jennifer says, “I come from a large family. I am one of 32 grandchildren!” When not teaching, she enjoys watching movies, reading, going to Disney, shopping and spending time with her family.

Jennifer is excited to be at TCS. “I love my students, the amazing first grade team I am a part of and the supportive faculty and staff here at TCS,” she says.  “From my very first day, I felt like I was a part of a family.  Everyone at TCS is kind, helpful, always smiling and willing to lend a hand.  Coming to school each day is a joy.  My favorite thing about TCS is Chapel. I love seeing my daughters in Chapel each morning.  I love watching my students sing!”

Jennifer continues, “My classroom is full of fantastic, superhero students! Each student brings his or her own special gifts and talents. My students are so sweet to each other, praying for one another, helping and encouraging each other. I am truly blessed to be their teacher.”

Jennifer shares her favorite Bible verse:
He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.Matthew 18: 2 – 5

Get to Know Amanda Gordon, TCS Curriculum Specialist

Amanda Gordon, TCS Curriculum Specialist, serves as a valuable member of The Christ School’s Academic Team. Through her work, our program continues to grow and thrive. We are pleased for you to get to know Amanda!

“My husband, Cameron, and I have two children, Jackson, who is in 2nd grade and Levi, who is in kindergarten,” Amanda says.  “We have recently become Disney annual pass holders which has been so much fun!  We love going on adventures, whether it be going to a theme park, staying at the beach, riding the Sunrail, visiting new cities, or exploring the great outdoors.  We also love declaring “pajama days” where we stay home all day doing things in our pajamas.”

“One of the things that has recently bonded us the most is that the kids and I all come to TCS together every day,” she notes. “How we got to this place was a total God thing; it started with finding the perfect place for Jackson to go to school. Cameron and I wanted a small, loving, Christian environment for him that would grow him into a well-rounded child.  Within days of him starting, we saw the happiest child!  Every day he came home saying how ‘awesome’ his day was.  I knew in my heart that I wanted that for myself as well.  Through a series of God-led events, I was hired as the Curriculum Specialist in July 2016 and knew that I had found my home.

“This year I’ve been stretched to lead some new initiatives, my favorite being the Middle School Houses,” Amanda continues. “The Houses give the middle school students a chance at growing together as a community filled with love, support, and new friendships. We started the year off with the House reveals, our first House competition, and the middle school retreat, all of which were huge successes!  We are about to have our second House competition this Friday.  My goal is to have the Houses continue to grow together in a loving, spirit-led community that will help nurture the students through their middle school years.  I would love for the eighth grade students to walk out of this year saying it was their best year ever at TCS!”

“Along with the Houses, I love that I get to work with all of the teachers at TCS to develop and implement curriculum and strategies to make each classroom a unique learning experience,” she says.  “I am always looking for ways to enhance and improve our curriculum to ensure optimal learning for all students at all levels.  Our awesome teachers are a huge help with this and are always trying new things to make their teaching more engaging while including the 4 C’s and growth mindset into their lessons.

“TCS is a huge part of our family.  We can’t think of a better place for our children to be than TCS.  We are seeing our children develop and stretch their minds daily in their learning environments.  I credit their teachers for the individual love and attention they feel and receive at TCS. Everyone around them nurtures, supports, loves, and grows them to become children who love God and love each other. We are confident that the foundation they are receiving here will help them become successful with whatever they choose to do in the future.

“I also can’t think of a better place to work,” Amanda continues. “I am surrounded by a community of Christ-loving individuals who pray for me, support me, love me, and help me grow personally, professionally, and spiritually. The confidence my colleagues have in me is so motivating and makes we strive to be the best I can be for TCS. My favorite part about being here is the people, all of whom I can call friends.  I love that we are rooted in prayer, whether it be praying before meetings, in our prayer groups, or just praying individually for each other. There is such a sense of peace and love knowing that God is at the center of us all.”

Meet Lydia Roper, 4th Grade Teacher

The Christ School is pleased to introduce Lydia Roper, who joins TCS this year as a 4th grade teacher.  Lydia grew up in Tallahassee and earned her Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Anthropology from FSU. She then earned her Master’s degree in Education from UCF.  Lydia taught in Orange County Public Schools for six years. When not teaching, Lydia loves to exercise, read, and watch British TV (especially mysteries).

Lydia and her husband, Chris, have two boys. Charlie is five and is in kindergarten at TCS. Tommy is three and goes to the Weekday School. Lydia says, “I came to TCS after learning about the school while my oldest boy was attending the Weekday School. I love being able to pray and worship the Lord while I’m at work. Sharing God with my students is awesome!”

She continues, “I am excited to be teaching 4th grade because I LOVE Florida history!  Fourth grade is jam packed with awesome concepts and knowledge. I am most excited to watch my 4th grade students blossom as they learn new and inspiring topics!”

TCS is Family

As an involved TCS dad, PE teacher and coach, Jim Vais is a familiar face here at TCS. This year, Jim has eagerly taken on the role of Director of Athletics and Student Conduct. “I can’t think of a better situation for my family to be in than at The Christ School,” says Jim. “I enjoy serving at any opportunity that God provides me.”

“My wife Tami and I have two children at TCS,” says Jim. “Jennifer is in 5th grade and James is in Kindergarten.  We are members and worship at First Presbyterian Church, where we also were married 16 years ago this October.  I moved to Orlando in 1992 after graduating from Penn State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science.  I worked at Walt Disney World for 23 years before answering God’s call to The Christ School in 2015.”

Jim continues, “Our family’s roots are in Pennsylvania, so we often like to visit our families as well as cheer on our hometown teams!  Go Steelers, Go Penguins, Go Nittany Lions!  We do not have family here in Orlando, however, our Bible Study, The Christ School and FPCO have quickly become our family away from home. We are so thankful for our families!”

“Our family loves The Christ School and we feel blessed to be involved with the school.” he says. “Tami served as PTF President last year and continues to volunteer her time to support the school.  I have the blessing of driving Jennifer and James to school every day and get to start the day saying a morning prayer in the car and then we get to worship in Chapel every morning.  Jennifer and James are being fed daily in the word of our Lord and Savior. They both love their teachers and the foundation they are getting will allow them to thrive throughout their lifetime. My hope is that they will find Joy in Jesus and that will be evident in their journey at TCS and beyond.”

Jim shares his favorite Bible verse: Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Nothing But Net!

The Christ School welcomes Durell Sykes to our faculty, serving as PE teacher and Boys’ Basketball Coach. Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Durell moved to Florida at age 7 with his mother and brother. “It was a culture shock in the beginning because of the heat all year-round, but we loved it,” he says.

A love of sports came early to Durell.“The first sport I was introduced to was baseball, but when my mother bought us a basketball hoop, basketball quickly became my favorite sport,” he says. Durell played basketball in high school, and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management at Warner University and played on their basketball team. He then played professional basketball on the Panama National Pre-selection team and in a Costa Rican League. Even though he played professionally, his describes his favorite moment as a player, “It was when I made the game-winning 3 pointer at the buzzer to win the game at Poinciana High School,” he smiles.

After playing professionally, Durell served as a basketball coach and taught physical education for three years in Orange County Public Schools. He says, “I enjoy coaching kids in many different sports and seeing them reach their full potential.”

Durell is excited about the opportunity to teach at TCS. “I went to a private Christian university and I really enjoyed my time there,” he says. “I feel that being there made me become a better person. I wanted to get back to that type of atmosphere and I believe The Christ School is the spot for me!”

Durell shares his favorite Bible verse:Tell everyone who is discouraged, be strong and don’t be afraid! God is coming to your rescue.
Isaiah 35:4

Once a Lion, Always a Lion!

The Christ School is delighted to welcome back TCS alumna Heidi Rhodes, who serves as First Grade Assistant. Heidi grew up in Orlando. She attended The Weekday School from 2-Day 2s to Kindergarten, and then was a student at TCS from first to eighth grade; a member of The Christ School Class of 2008. She attended Boone High School in the Law Magnet program, and then attended Valencia College.

Recently, Heidi has been spending a lot of time traveling and exploring the world. “I enjoy hiking and camping; anything outdoors, really,” she says. “I’ve spent the last few years climbing mountains and tackling as many fourteeners (mountains with an elevation of 14,000 ft) as I could. After living in the southwest for about four years, I am happy to be back with family here in Florida.

“I heard through the grapevine that there were a few openings here at TCS, Heidi says. “The thought of an opportunity to provide children with the same Christ-centered education I had the privilege to receive caught my attention right away. I am so honored to be able to get to know each and every child’s VERY unique personality. It has been a blessing getting acquainted with all of our first grade students!

“My favorite thing about The Christ School is the close-knit, family atmosphere that TCS provides for its students, as well as its staff. It is unlike anywhere else. TCS truly feels like home to me! Once a Lion, always a Lion!” she says.

Parent Teacher Conference Day

The Christ School Parent Teacher Conference Day is Monday, August 28. You will receive a link tomorrow from your child’s teacher to sign up for your conference. If you do not receive a link, please contact your child’s teacher.

As an opportunity to Be Family Friendly, TCS is offering REACH Day Camp for students currently enrolled in the REACH program from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm on conference day. REACH families will receive an email this week with camp information and registration specifics. In addition, child care (for TCS TK-8th grade students, only) will be available during your child’s conference time in room 145, located across from the Kindergarten classrooms on the first floor.

The focus of this first Parent-Teacher Conference is Developing Great Learners and our teachers will be using this time to hear from you so they can better understand your child as a learner – areas of strength as well as opportunities for growth and improvement. Based on this conversation and what they have already observed in the classroom, one goal will be created specific to each of the following areas: Knowledge Acquisition, the 4 C’s (skills), and Growth Mindset. These three goals will provide the basis for the Student Learning Plan and will be shared with parents following the conference day. Also, our teachers will take time during Curriculum Night sessions next week to answer questions to help prepare you for your parent-teacher conference.

TCS is Home

You may have noticed a familiar face heading up a new space at TCS. This year, Diane Eakins, who has worked at TCS as a teachers’ assistant, joins the front office staff as administrative assistant.

Diane grew up in Rochester, New York on Lake Ontario. Diane has a close relationship with her family and says, “My mom is one of 16 children, and my family all lives within a 10 mile radius from each other in New York.”

Diane attended a small 2 year college in New York, studying transportation and logistics. A job transfer brought her to Orlando, where she met and married her husband, Ricky. After working at the airport for 8 years and then in sales for Data Security and Disaster Recovery for 4 years, Diane chose to stay home with their two children, Connor and Cara. Connor, TCS class of 2013, and Cara, TCS class of 2014, attended The Weekday School, and then attended the The Christ School from kindergarten through 8th grade. Cara is now a Senior at Boone High School and is dual enrolled at Valencia. Connor will attend UNF this fall.

Diane says, “I started volunteering at The Weekday School, then it developed into working 4 years as a 3 day 3 assistant teacher. I was hired by The Christ School, and worked as a teachers’ assistant for the past 12 years. I am happy to now be working in the front office. My children have thrived in so many ways at TCS and have moved on, but I can’t  leave this wonderful place!  I love God and I love our school!  I am happy to serve our teachers and staff, our families, and most of all our students. This is my big family in Florida within a 10 mile radius.  It is home for me!”

Introducing Thea Nelson, 1st Grade Teacher

The Christ School is happy to introduce Thea Nelson, first grade teacher at TCS. Thea comes to The Christ School from Mt. Paran Christian School in the Atlanta area , where she worked with Aaron Farrant, Head of School. She and her husband Justin, TCS 7th and 8th grade science teacher, have two children: Trevor, who is in 6th grade at TCS, and Aila, who is in 4th grade at TCS. When she is not teaching, Thea enjoys adventures with her family, photography and writing.

Thea grew up in Turlock, California and received her degree in education from California State University Stanislaus with a concentration in Child Development. She has been an education professional for 21 years, teaching preschool-fourth grade, tutoring, and homeschooling.

“Teaching is this unparalleled opportunity to bend down and get eye to eye with a child, to pour out knowledge and blessing, to administer encouragement, to guide toward the wisest choice, and to speak God-given potential and purpose into that child’s heart,” says Thea. “I love getting to know the children and seeing what makes their eyes light up, and to discover how they love to learn.”

Thea continues, “While my family and I are new to TCS, it has been apparent from day one that TCS is special because the people here love God, and they live it out in the way they love others. There is no question that the administration and faculty genuinely care about serving students and families here, and stewarding the daily opportunities we have to do so. We were welcomed warmly from the beginning and truly feel that we’ve joined a family here!”
