The Value of Games

Why play games in school?  Games help students develop essential skills such as critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, reasoning, and to value the importance of teamwork. To kick off this school year, TCS Compass students began to explore several of the games they would play in class. They learned how the games are set up, the rules of play, how to transition, and how to problem solve. Last week, students shifted between 2 or 3 game stations in the Compass classroom including several strategy and visual discrimination games that are new to the Compass curriculum. “We are pleased to continue to offer this distinctive class where playing challenging games allows us to address the most difficult content in a light and engaging way.  I truly love to hear students encouraging each other through the hardest parts and celebrating the smallest victories.  Compass is a place to try something new and experience success and failure in a safe environment.  Be on the lookout for my Christmas Gift Recommendations for our LIONS!” says Mrs. Gibbs, TCS Compass teacher.

Carpool Safety at The Christ School

IMPORTANT

While carpool is underway, cellphone use is strictly prohibited. For the safety of your children and our faculty and staff, the use of any electronic communication devices during carpool is not permitted. This includes any type of hands-free operation via bluetooth or other similar device connections. Only if your vehicle is in “park” and you are parked and waiting prior to the start of carpool, may you use your device. However, during carpool times cellphone use is prohibited. We appreciate your cooperation with this important safety matter.

Morning Carpool
Carpool hours are from 7:50 a.m. – 8:10 a.m. under the Angel Wing.  Allen Hall will be open at 7:50 a.m. to welcome children (with the exception of enrolled early care children beginning at 7:00 a.m.). Enter campus from Jackson Street and you will either be directed to go around the playground loop or if there are few cars, you will be directed to go straight ahead. Wait for patrols or staff to open your car door. Wait while cars are moved up and eventually exit onto Church Street. Note Church street is one-way Eastbound back towards Rosalind Avenue.

Please do not drop off children without parental supervision prior to 7:50 AM to wait for school to open. There is no supervision for these children. If you wish to wait with your child under the Angel Wing, there are benches to sit on and wait.

Tips for Morning Carpool – READINESS and SAFETY

  1. Children should be prepared to exit the vehicle upon entering campus.
  2. Children should remain in a safety restraint until a patrol or staff person is ready to accept your child(ren).
  3. Wait for a patrol or staff person to open the vehicle door(s). Use auto-opener only when you see a patrol or staff person ready at the door of the vehicle.
  4. Use of cellphones (in hand or bluetooth) is prohibited during active carpool. This includes after the children have exited the vehicle.
  5. If you choose not to enter the carpool line, please park your vehicle in a legal parking space and walk your child(ren), at a minimum, to a safe location with line-of-sight to a school staff person. We ask that you use the parking spaces on Rosalind or Jackson for older children. As a courtesy, leave the Church Street parking spaces for our youngest children who may need extra time to unbuckle, etc. or for families dropping off large or heavy items to the school.
  6. Dropping off children in active traffic lanes of the surrounding public streets is not approved by The Christ School. This is a hazard to your children and others around you.

Afternoon Carpool
Campus will not be open to TCS cars until the Weekday School completes their carpool; usually by 3:10 p.m. Please do not stop and wait at the entrance on Jackson St., as that backs up traffic. You must park or drive around the block until the guard opens the gate.

Grades TK-5 carpool begins at 3:15 p.m.
Middle School carpool begins at 3:35 p.m.
Older siblings / older carpool riders:
If you are picking up more than one child, please arrive at the oldest child’s dismissal time. Younger children will be in a specific area awaiting your arrival at the oldest child’s dismissal time.

Please note the following:

  • Every passenger in the vehicle must have a seat and a restraint.
  • Cell phone usage is not permitted in an active carpool line, this includes Bluetooth.
  • Keep in mind that we share this great campus with FPCO and may need to make adjustments to carpool based on significant events in their schedule.
  • Walk ups will enter Allen Hall at the front door and exit via the door on the south side near Clayton Life Center.
  • Parents must complete the Transportation form on RenWeb listing the non-custodial individuals who are permitted to pick-up their child at TCS. If a person is not listed on this form or identified in a note or call from the parents to TCS office, the child will not be released until contact is made and permission given by a custodial parent.
  • Please be patient. At the beginning of each school year, the carpool line may move slowly. The length will improve once carpool groups form and when parents, teachers and children become more familiar with the system. The Christ School encourages families to carpool.
  • Please exercise care. Wait until all children in your carpool have entered or exited your car and the doors are securely closed before you pull forward. Watch for children walking in front of your car. Please remain in your car at all times during carpool and devote your full attention to driving and to the safety of all children and staff.
  • Do not drop children off unless you are parked in a legal parking space. Please do not drop off children in the street or from curbside areas around the campus.
  • Children not registered in the REACH program and not picked up from school by 4:00 PM (carpool ends at 3:50 p.m.) will be sent to the appropriate REACH group to await pickup. Consequently, a REACH drop-in fee of $25 will then be billed to the child’s account.

FACTS Incidental Expense Overview

FACTS Incidental Expense Overview
All incidental expenses (sports fees, field trips, etc.) will be attributed to the child(ren) in your FACTS account as they are incurred throughout the school year.  When you enrolled with The Christ School, you were required to create a FACTS Payment Plan.  This plan is used for scheduling Tuition and REACH (extended care) payments and is separate from the Incidental Expense portion of FACTS.  Here are a few frequently asked questions regarding incidental expenses.

How will I know if I have an Incidental Expense?
When the business office enters a charge into FACTS, you will get an email from FACTS with the subject line, “ACTION NEEDED: The Christ School Bill Available.”  It is important that you read the expense information carefully to ensure that you understand what charge was added and the date the payment is due.

What do I need to do when I receive a notice of an Incidental Expense?
If you have linked your bank account for Incidental Expenses (called Auto Pay), you do not need to do anything.  However, please pay careful attention to the due date on the email notice, as this is the date of your Auto Pay bank draft.

If you do not have a bank account linked for Auto Pay, you will need to make your payment by the Due Date.  The easiest way to do this is to log in to your FACTS account, and make your payment directly through the web site (via a bank account – credit cards are not an option).  While linking a bank account is not currently required, we encourage you to link an account to save you time and the hassle of mailing or bringing in a check to the school office.

When will Incidental Expenses be drafted via ACH?
If you are enrolled in Auto Pay, the ACH bank draft for incidentals will occur on approximately the 5th of the month following the charge.

How do I Enroll in Auto Pay?
Log in to your FACTS account. From the Home tab, click on “View Details” within the Payment Plan and Billing box.  If a charge has already been added to your account, you will see a row showing that your Incidental Expenses plan is active.  Under the Financial Account column, there should be an option to “Enroll in Auto Pay” for Incidental Expenses.  This will lead you through the steps to link a bank account for all future incidental charges.

Can I pay my balance before the due date?
Yes.  You can simply log in to your FACTS account and click on the green “Make a Payment” button.  This will take you through the process of paying all or part of your current balance with an immediate, one-time payment.

Can I pay online with a Credit Card?
No.  Credit card payments are not an option.

I received a “FACTS Change Notice.” What does that mean?
When any kind of change is made through the business office, it generates an email that simply states that there has been a change to your account.  There are many different reasons that this could occur: applying a payment made by paper check to the school, applying a credit, updating an amount or removing a charge that was added in error, etc.  When you get these emails, please take a few minutes to log in to your FACTS account to ensure that everything looks correct.  As always, please contact the business office if you have questions.

Are there any expenses that will not go through FACTS?
Yes – There are a few fundraising opportunities that occur throughout the year that will require your child to bring in cash or a check.  These include, but may not be limited to:

  • “Cashual” Days
  • Mane Event “Chance to Win” tickets
  • Monday and Friday lunch vendors, once the program is established for 2016-17

For any additional questions, please contact Bill Herlong or Margaret Peebles in the business office.

We’ve Got “PRIDE” on our Side!

We’ve got “PRIDE” on our side!

The Leadership417 8th grade wheel benefitted from the spiritual wisdom of Orlando Pride player, Leah Fortune. Leah spoke eloquently to the girls about how they can use their faith to grow as leaders. She shared that when playing for the Brazilian World Cup Soccer team, the competition and stress of communicating in Portuguese rather than English, led to sleepless nights. Leah turned to the Bible as a sleeping aid. After reading the New Testament in ten days, she entered a personal relationship with Jesus. Leah encouraged the girls to live a life of integrity, trustworthiness and consideration. As she impressed upon them that God’s character does not change, she encouraged the girls to not compromise their character as they enter high school. The girls had many take-aways from Leah’s visit including “when you know who you are, you are better able to serve others” and the much needed reminder that they cannot develop relationships with a phone in their hand.

Celebrating Our Athletes

The Christ School celebrated our middle school athletes with our first ever Sports Recognition Chapel on May 12. Each middle school athlete received a glass star for each team performance. These athletes roared through the 2015-2016 athletic year, showing strength and character. The Christ School thanks Coach Costin and Coach Worden, who have retired from coaching at TCS. They served our Lions with love and energy!  We are especially proud of our 8th grade athletes who have lead the way this year and worked so hard during their time at TCS. Here are some 8th grade athletic highlights:

8th Grade Flag Football team – 2nd place in their tournament
8th Grade Girls Volleyball team – 1st place in their tournament
8th Grade Girls Basketball team – 2nd place in their tournament

Track Championship Meet:

Coach Wiborg says, “Thank you to our 8th grade athletes for a job well done. You have left a legacy that shines and brings all the Glory to God.  We look forward to that light shining brightly as God journeys you on to your next adventure. Once a Lion, always a Lion!”

Summer Learning

We are pleased to announce that once again The Christ School will offer our students rising into grades 1-8 the opportunity to avoid the summer “brain drain” by participating in the 2016 Summer Learning Program.  Summer is a wonderful time for children to relax and have fun, but it is also a time for parents and children to enjoy learning together. Reading over the summer is critical in helping students maintain good reading skills.  The purpose of this summer program is to provide our students with fun and engaging ways to maintain their reading and math skills.

Summer Learning packets will come home with students before the last day of school and will include a detailed letter with information on how the program works here at The Christ School. Students receive recognition and awards as an incentive for participating in the Summer Learning Program. Please contact Terra Townsend in the Academic Office with any questions about the program.

Leadership417

It’s not a secret that the 8th grade girls are currently participating in the Leadership417 wheel course, but you may not know that they have recently completed the business book The Secret: What Great Leaders Know and Do by Ken Blanchard and Mark Miller. The girls did an excellent job leading the book discussions. Activities with a purpose are also a key part of the course. The activities have helped them to understand that there are often diverse ways to solve a problem, the importance of allowing for creativity when leading, and that we need to be aware of how we communicate. The eighth grade boys completed the course last grading period, which also included the leadership principles of Coach John Wooden. Leadership417 is based on Colossians 4:17, which requires that we do our best for the Lord.

The Christ School Mission Alive!

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
– John 13:35
Dear TCS Community,

I am delighted to share a message that I received this morning from Mr. Seth Early, who resides in Haywood County, North Carolina.  Mr. Early had the opportunity to serve alongside our 7th grade team this week, and shares his impression of our students, teachers, and parents.

The behaviors and actions of our team described by Mr. Early are noteworthy examples of what it means to put The Christ School mission into action. I commend our students for their commitment to being others-oriented, motivation to being life-long learners, and devotion to glorifying God. Please enjoy the message below.

Mr. Powell,
My name is Seth Early and I am an Environmental Health Program Specialist for Buncombe County Environmental Health in North Carolina. I am sending you this email because I had the opportunity to meet a group of your students, staff, and parents this week and feel that the thoughts that I have after this meeting are worth sharing with you. I am a regulator for Buncombe County NC, but I live in Haywood County NC. As part of my work with the county I have come to know and deeply appreciate ReCreation Experiences and their role in our community. When their groups are working in Buncombe County I have to interact in more of the official capacity of my employment, but when the groups work outside of Buncombe, I have the opportunity to volunteer my time and knowledge and work alongside their groups. This was the case with the group that spent part of this week here in the mountains from your school.

I am not certain how much you have heard about the task that was at hand for your group, but they were given a challenge of immense proportions and they rose to it efficiently and fervently. The group came to my home county and served one of my neighbors (literally about 1.5 miles down the road from the house I just sold) and blessed her with love and service. They spent two days involved in sheer backbreaking physical labor as they hand dug a completely new septic system on her property. This is work that is typically done with heavy equipment and that most people would never entertain the idea of undertaking by hand. They dug 150′ (actually 160′ because someone who shall remain nameless measured the ditches a little long when he laid things out) of ditch, 3′ in width, and 20″-25″ in depth, installed the trench material and covered it up. All this in a day and a half on the property!

I just want to tell you that I was absolutely blown away by your group! First of all the staff that came with the students were absolutely amazing. I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Coryell, Mrs. Ross, and Coach Vais. The interaction between these leaders and their students was nothing short of awe inspiring. The staff are true leaders for these young people. They quickly demonstrated to me that they were not only willing to lead by direction, but that they had a great commitment to leading by example. To watch them standing alongside the students with shovel, pick, or rake in hand, working as hard as they could was a true blessing. I have worked alongside with or inspected for many of the groups with ReCreation and several other similar organizations and often do not see this deep commitment to leadership by example (both in attitude and labor). Secondly the parents that came as chaperones were awesome! Again, I was encouraged by the commitment that they had to these students and to the work that they were there to do. They never backed down from the task at hand, and encouraged the students with a committed spirit and demeanor and this commitment helped to keep the students focused and driven to achieve the goals of the task placed in front of them. Finally, I cannot begin to explain how impressed I was with your students! These young people were absolutely great! They never complained, they just served. They knew what they were there to do, and they did it. Not to mention the first day the sun beat down without a cloud in the sky, and the second day it barely reached 50 degrees and the rain and wind blew the entire time they worked! It always amazes me to watch these groups come to an unfamiliar area, far away from the comfort of home and without all of their normal amenities, and never back down from a chance to serve. Your group, however, was one of the most productive I have ever seen! They accomplished more in one day with the septic than any other group their size (and even some larger) has accomplished. Many of the groups I have worked with are older, and if I am being honest I was a little concerned when I heard that the group consisted of only seventh graders, but they proved me wrong! You truly have a great group, and I hope that this type of ministry is continued to be supported and encouraged at your school, because I know the difference that it makes on both sides of those involved. Each one of these groups I meet or work with continues to change and encourage me, but your particular group did so in a huge way! Thank for being obedient to the path that is set before you and the school, and thanks for the opportunity for me to have a very small involvement in it!

Sincerely,

Seth Early, REHS

It is stories like this one that remind us of how our mission comes alive and bears fruit. To God be the Glory!

Kagan Structures

TCS 7th and 8th grade Social Studies students participated in Kagan Structures to enhance their learning and classroom experiences. Kagan Structures are research-based strategies that engage ALL students in the learning process. Imbedded within the structures are social skills, team-building, and movement. The students participated in two combined structures: Find Someone Who and Hands Up-Stand Up-Pair Up.  Before engaging in the structures, an “appreciation” is decided upon by the students, which must be expressed to their partners or team. For this lesson, Jack Michaels created hand motions to go along with the required “thank you very much.”

Growing Up!

You may have noticed our 8th grade students acting strangely – being very kind to small bags of flour!  They have been deemed the proud parents of “flour babies,” and are learning just a little about the responsibility of parenting. Our middle school teachers have joined in the flour baby fun by giving the students a salary and a budget, and explaining that for this assignment they are college graduates who are married. Each student now has a two-income family and one newborn. Oh my, that combined $64,000 per year salary certainly needs to be stretched! As the week has progressed, the realities of life, such as unexpected repairs or sickness, have appeared.  “This lesson has been a fun, relevant experience for our students,” says Mrs. Crimmins.  “Our goal is to help them understand the realities that much of society experiences as well as to provide them with more of an incentive to plan for the future. We would also love for our students to have a greater appreciation for the daily blessings they receive. We have enjoyed seeing them care for their ‘flour babies’ as well as hearing the moans when an essential is deducted from the budget.”

Congressional Award Winner

Congratulations to TCS 8th grade student Sierra Tagman, who has earned a Bronze Congressional Medal.  The award will be presented to Sierra by Congressman Daniel Webster on Monday, May 9 at 8:15 a.m. at our morning chapel.

The Congressional Award is the United States Congress’ award for young Americans. It is non-partisan, voluntary, and non-competitive. The program is open to all young people ages 14 to 23. Participants can earn Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Certificates and Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Medals. Each level involves setting goals in four program areas; Volunteer Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration. The Congressional Award is not an award for past accomplishments. Instead, recipients are honored for achieving their own challenging goals.

To earn her award, Sierra challenged herself and completed tasks in each of the required categories.  For the Public Service category, she volunteered at the VA Hospital in Winter Park and volunteered at The Christ School’s summer program, Summer in the City. For the Personal Development category, she practiced her favorite instrument, the guitar, and performed in The Christ School’s chapel praise band.  For the Physical Fitness category, she played volleyball at The Christ School and as a member of the Winter Park Volleyball Club team.  For the Expedition/Exploration category, she explored Bejing China and visited the Great Wall, and New York City including making her way to the Crown of the Statue of Liberty.

Working on the Congressional Award allowed me to develop as a person and helped me improve my community and my country,” says Sierra.

“The Christ School is proud of Sierra Tagman for her commitment to learning; setting goals and challenging herself,” says Dr. Jason Powell, The Christ School’s Head of School. “We commend her for being an others-oriented leader, and for sharing her gifts and talents with our students.”  Powell continues, “It is an honor to have Congressman Webster visit our campus to present the Congressional Medal to Sierra. We are excited to introduce him to our students.”

Congressman Daniel Webster is a family man and small business owner who is dedicated to serving Central Florida with honor and integrity. Webster is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (2010-present), where he serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, including the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit; Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipe-lines and Hazardous Materials; and the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment. During his time in the Florida Legislature (1980-2008), Webster served as the Speaker of the Florida House and Majority Leader in the Florida Senate, working to pass sweeping reforms in Florida that were based on solid governing principles. Daniel and Sandy Webster have been blessed with six children, and eleven wonderful grandchildren. Known for many things, Daniel Webster holds his faith, his family, and his principles as his biggest assets.

Lessons in Leadership

Our Yearbook staff held a recognition ceremony on May 2, in which Ansley Dalton and Gabi Fatigati, outgoing Co-Editors-in-Chief of the 2016 yearbook, tapped three rising middle school staffers to lead the creation of next year’s book. 7th grade students Ellie Bostedo and Sydney Wall were selected to serve as the Co-Editors-in-Chief of the 2017 edition of Paw Prints. Sixth grade student Peyton Kimble will serve a year in apprenticeship as the staff’s Assistant Editor.

Ellie, Sydney and Peyton, along with fellow 7th grade staffer Emma Micciche, will attend Yearbookpalooza, Herff Jones’ three-day summer leadership workshop for yearbook editorial boards from across the state of Florida. The Christ School team will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on classes taught by yearbook journalism professionals from throughout the country.
