Exploring Triptychs

TCS middle school 2D Art Elective students created organically-inspired triptychs. Some of their creations are on display in the middle school hallway, and you can see them at Open House on Thursday.  For the lesson, students learned about the long history of triptychs used in Christian art. Triptychs are a 3 framed image, often with a large central figure flanked by two related smaller images. These works were often devotional in nature, depicting biblical scenes and/or saints. The utilitarian function of a triptych was that it could be folded and therefore transported safely to other sites. The students also learned that the tradition of a triptych is still going, although the subject matter has expanded beyond the secular realm.
Students also learned about creating a “contour-line drawing” which would capture the curves and contours of a subject. Armed with this knowledge, the class headed outside to a garden next to the campus to create contour-line drawings of natural subject matter. These observational sketches were then used to create a 3 part triptych of their own. Color theory was also applied when the students were challenged to use a different color scheme in each panel.

RenWeb Power Conference

This summer, Joanne Fleming, TCS Director of Admission, and Mike Coryell, TCS Student Programs Specialist, attended the RenWeb Power Conference in San Antonio, TX.  Each had a specific reason to attend, and the knowledge gained from both Joanne and Mike will help everyone at TCS make the most of this valuable tool.  Mike tells us, “I discovered ways to make RenWeb a more effective and efficient means of communication between teachers and families.”  Joanne reflects on her experience, “Attending the RenWeb Power Conference afforded me the opportunity to learn from fellow Admission professionals from around the country and the world. It was interesting to compare TCS with other schools and assuring to discover the things we are doing well. TCS is ahead of the technology curve in a lot of areas, especially in Advancement. It was equally rewarding to learn new techniques and programs from schools that were established many years before us. We are definitely moving in the right direction and have a healthy future ahead. Moving TCS to online Inquiry, Application, Enrollment and Re-Enrollment was a huge task but one that set us up to partner with 21st century families. RenWeb is a growing company; just as TCS is a growing school. We have a lot to learn from each other.”

What is Compass?

Compass at The Christ School provides students with the opportunity to explore and experience critical and creative thinking. Students are engaged in a variety of critical thinking problems, puzzles, spontaneous exercises, logic, and strategy activities. These activities are all designed to strengthen mental skills necessary for making decisions about everything in our lives; namely weighing the evidence and finding the truth.  Students are encouraged to take risks in a safe environment, think objectively, and arrive at conclusions based on logic and fact.  The idea that “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives  is being systematically cultivated.  Students will utilize critical thinking skills to evaluate and respond to a challenge/experience in light of Biblical principles.
During the first week of school, students in grades TK – 6 participated in a large group non-verbal challenge.  The students then discussed what their ideas for what their Table Names might be and gave each other feedback.  Ask your child what his/hers is!  This activity had them using adjectives or alliteration to come up with a name they will use in Compass to help us remember each others names.  This is also a team building activity that helps to begin the year as a class family.

Quaver Music Program

This year in music class, lower school students will be introduced to a new, interactive music program called Quaver’s Marvelous World of Music. Classes will be introduced to QuaverMusic.com, an interactive website that extends the student’s ability to explore and create music beyond the classroom.

Please register your student for a free Quaver account. To register, visit www.QuaverMusic.com and click on the “Sign Up” window in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Follow the onscreen instructions for creating an account, and be sure to enter an active parent email address when asked.

After completing the sign up process, you will receive and email from the Quaver Team with the option to activate your student’s account. Simply verify your email address and your student will be able to access all the amazing features of our site, including customizing the Avatar or Music Room, as well as being able to retrieve a lost password.

Music teacher Jennifer Sweet will show some Quaver episodes as part of her lessons on elements of Music Theory, Instruments and Ensembles, Composers and Music History, and Music Styles. Quaver’s World is part Bill Nye the Science Guy, Beakman, and Monty Python rolled into one, and kids (and teachers) love it!

We hope that you and your student enjoy your journey into Quaver’s Marvelous World of Music both in the classroom and at home. If you have questions, please contact Jennifer Sweet.

Boy Scout Troop 24 and Cub Scout Pack 24

All boys in 6th grade and above are invited to join Boy Scout Troop 24. Boys in first through fifth grade are invited to join Cub Scout Pack 24.  Both groups are both chartered through First Presbyterian Church.  The Troop and the Pack provide opportunities for boys to meet regularly, camp out and learn lifelong skills while having fun.  TCS alums Will Marberry and Nicholas Millard just returned from a high adventure week at Philmont Ranch in New Mexico. Founded in 1924, Troop 24 is the oldest Boy Scout Troop in Central Florida.  Troop 24 meets regularly every Monday night at 7:00 p.m. in the Warehouse on the third floor of The Christ School.  Pack 24 meets regularly on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the same location.  For more information, contact TCS Dad and Assistant Scoutmaster Joel Garris at 407-619-5307 or joel@planwithnips.com.

Important Carpool Information

Now that school has begun, we would like to remind you of our morning and afternoon carpool procedures. Safety is our top priority, and timeliness is also important. Please be sure to follow these important carpool procedures to ensure our students’ safety as they arrive and leave school.

Morning carpool time is 7:50 – 8:10 a.m.

  • The Christ School will be open at 7:50 a.m. to welcome students (with the exception of enrolled early care students beginning at 7:00 a.m.). Enter campus for carpool from Jackson Street.
  • Please arrive in carpool by 8:10 a.m. Teachers bring their students to the sanctuary immediately following carpool, and all cars must be clear of the Angel Wing at that time. Staying on schedule is key to starting the day off right for the teachers and students.
  • Have your child packed and ready to exit the car.
  • Keep your eyes on the staff and safety patrols who are running carpool. Due to the glare on the windshields, it is often difficult to see the driver’s face. The staff and safety patrols will wave you forward or signal you to stop.
  • Wait until a patrol opens your car door before allowing your child to exit the car.
  • Drivers, please refrain from any cell phone or other technology usage (including ear pieces) once carpool has started. The children are at risk if you are using a device.
  • If you are walking your child onto campus, be sure to park in a legal parking spot and feed the meter.
  • Ensure that you have a direct line of sight with a TCS staff person prior to releasing your child from your care if you are walking your child onto campus. Please do not drop off your child in the street or from curbside areas around the campus.
  • Unless your child is enrolled in early care, please wait until 7:50 a.m. to drop your child off for school. Parental supervision is required until school opens at 7:50 a.m. If you wish to wait with your child under the Angel Wing, there are benches available.

Afternoon Carpool
Grades TK-5 carpool begins at 3:15 p.m.
Middle School carpool begins at 3:35 p.m.

If you are picking up more than one child, please arrive at the oldest child’s dismissal time. Younger children will be in a specific area awaiting your arrival at the oldest child’s dismissal time.

  • Every passenger in the vehicle must have a seat and a restraint.
  • Please be patient. At the beginning of each school year, the carpool line may move slowly. The length will improve once parents, teachers and students become more familiar with the system. The Christ School encourages families to carpool.
  • Please exercise care. Wait until all students in your carpool have entered or exited your car and the doors are securely closed before you pull forward. Watch for students walking in front of your car. Please remain in your car at all times during carpool and devote your full attention to driving and to the safety of all students and staff.
  • Remember to complete the Transportation Form on RenWeb listing the non-custodial individuals who are permitted to pick-up their child at TCS. If a person is not listed on this form or identified in a note or call from the parents to TCS office, the student will not be released until contact is made and permission given by custodial parent.
  • Keep in mind that we share this great campus with FPCO and may need to make adjustments to carpool based on significant events in their schedule.
  • Walk ups will enter The Christ School lobby through the front door and exit via the door on the south side near Clayton Life Center.
  • Students not registered in the after school REACH program and not picked up from school by 4:00 PM (carpool ends at 3:50 p.m.) will be sent to the appropriate REACH group to await pickup. A REACH drop-in fee of $25 will then be billed to the student’s account.

A Message from the Garris Family

Humbled and grateful. These are two words that fall woefully short of expressing my thanks for The Christ School family we are privileged to call friends.  Your generosity, prayers, and donations of precious stuffed animals have far surpassed our goals and dreams of serving the Singita Village School in South Africa.  Your generous donations helped us reach our goal and we will be building a gate, planting trees, and purchasing cots for these sweet children.  We also have a little left over to be able to give a cash donation so they can purchase books they need.  And the stuffed animals?  Wow – what a gift!  We have suitcases full of wonderful stuffed animals that will bring joy to so many.  And the amazing thing is, the company that we work with has worked with the airlines to allow us to bring extra suitcases to bring all the animals to the children.  Every child will get at least 2 stuffed animals, and we will give them with love on your behalf.  We leave July 4th and ask that you keep us in prayer.  We look forward to coming back in the fall to share pictures and stories of the children you help so much. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

Stephanie and Joel Garris, Nelson, Ethan and Connor

Summer Learning

We are pleased to announce that once again The Christ School will offer our students in grades K-7 the opportunity to avoid the summer “brain drain” by participating in the 2015 Summer Learning Program.  Summer is a wonderful time for children to relax and have fun, but it is also a time for parents and children to enjoy learning together. Reading over the summer is critical in helping students maintain good reading skills.  The purpose of this summer program is to provide our students with fun and engaging ways to maintain their reading and math skills.

Summer Learning packets will come home with students before the last day of school and will include a detailed letter with information on how the program works here at The Christ School. Students do receive recognition and awards as an incentive for participating in the Summer Learning Program. Please contact Jessi Davis in the Academic Office (407-849-1665) with any questions about the program.

Cashual Day This Friday

This Friday, May 22, students may dress in casual clothing for a minimum of a $1 donation. Students must adhere to the dress guidelines for Cashual Day.  Proceeds from Cashual Day will benefit the Singita Village School, a Christian pre-school in a remote village outside of Johannesburg, South Africa. Our donations will help to build a perimeter fence around the school to provide safety and freedom for the children as they play. If we raise $1500, the African Safari Company will give us $1000 to complete the project. The Garris family (sons Connor, Ethan, and Nelson), who has worked with the school since 2007, visit every other year to serve the children and teachers and to help provide much needed improvements.  In the past, The Christ School has generously donated to help carpet rooms in the school and replace rusting playground equipment.  Help us support the Singita Village School by bringing in your donation this Friday for our final Cashual Day of the year.

Mary Crimmins Earns Professional Honor

The Christ School congratulates Mary Crimmins, TCS middle school social studies teacher, on being selected as a presenter at the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS) convention in November.  Out of 163 applicants, only 50 were chosen to be presenters. “I am thrilled to have been selected,” says Mary. Her presentation is entitled “The (Digital) Natives are Restless.” She will address the myths and realities of individuals born between 1995 – 2007, known as Generation Z.  This is the first generation to live their entire lives in the digital world.  Mary says, “I’ll be drawing from research, experience and interviews. Many of the 7th and 8th grade students at TCS have already provided me with valuable insights. I also hope to develop resources that will be helpful not only to me, but to other professional educators.” We applaud Mrs. Crimmins on this significant professional honor.

Media Center News

There are less than two weeks left of book check-out for this school year. The last day of check-out will be Friday, May 15. All books are to be returned to the Media Center or placed in Ms. Hayes’s mailbox by Friday, May 29. It has been an exciting few weeks in the Media Center. Our 3rd-5th grade students, who read three Sunshine State books, cast their votes in the state election to help select the best book for grades 3-5 for Florida. Also, our K-2nd grade students voted in the Florida Reading Association election. They helped choose this year’s winner of the Children’s Book Award, Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein.

Strawberries and Learning

Transitional Kindergarten students studied strawberry plants and the book Cook-A-Doodle Doo by Janet Stevens. In the story, Brown Rooster, the great grandson of the Little Red Hen, makes a strawberry shortcake with his barnyard friends. The students compared a strawberry plant to blueberry plants. The lesson then introduced measurement, cooking terminology, recipes and various kitchen tools as the members of the class worked to bake a strawberry shortcake from scratch. The moms of our little bakers will be treated to this yummy dessert at an early Mother’s Day celebration.

5th Grade State Floats

Written by Frankie, 5th grade student
Recently, fifth grade students presented state float projects. It was a fun and creative process to learn more about the 50 states that comprise our great nation. We each chose a state to research and, over the course of three weeks, gathered important facts about our state and created a small float to reveal our findings about our chosen state.  We each gave a presentation to our class about our float. We improved in our public speaking skills and even had the opportunity to receive feedback from our friends. Now the floats are on display in the hall just outside the spiral staircase on the third floor, waiting for you to see them!

5th Grade Visits the Capitol

Article by Peyton, 5th grade student
On April 16, TCS 5th grade students embarked on a field trip to Tallahassee to learn more about our state’s government. We started our trip on a peaceful boat ride through the waters of Wakulla Springs. We spotted a lot of interesting animals and plants, and we learned about the area’s history. Next, our group went to the Tallahassee Museum. We walked on their boardwalk, which led us around the property to see animal habitats. Then we headed to Big Bend Farm, where our group learned about living on a farm in the 1800’s. We had the opportunity to see, and sometimes pet, the animals living there. The Florida State fans were happy when we took a group picture in front of the Unconquered statue, with Chief Osceola riding the horse Renegade. That evening we went to see a 3-D iMax movie about the lemurs of Madagascar, and then headed to the hotel for some much needed rest. The next day we woke up early to head over to the new and old capitol buildings. We learned about the changes in the buildings and how they bring us to what we have today. We saw the differences in the two buildings and explored the old capitol building in a scavenger hunt. Then, we headed to tour the governor’s mansion. Our guide pointed out certain details like how some of the tableware came from the U.S.S. Florida submarine. We wrapped up our trip by stepping back in time when we visited Mission San Luis. We learned about the Spanish missionaries and Apalachee natives in the area, and we saw their traditional homes. We also learned how to shoot a cannon- don’t worry, we didn’t really shoot it. We were all sad to leave, but we were glad to have had the experience and to have shined the light of Christ unto others.

Kudos to Kelly

Why is Kelly George carrying so many backpacks? Is it to carry all of her middle school materials? No. Is it because she is a pack rat?  Not at all! After a discussion in 7th grade Citizenship class about how each person should do their part to contribute to their community, Kelly was inspired. She asked her classmates to donate gently used backpacks for children who she tutors at a local ministry. Kelly saw a need, and along with her classmates, was able to fill it. Kelly has demonstrated two important attributes of our Portrait of a Graduate: being devoted to glorifying God and committed to being others-oriented.  Congratulations Kelly for being both a volunteer and an activist.

Learning About Homelessness

On March 30, Spencer Pfleiderer, Director of Compassion Corner, spoke to the second grade students about homelessness. He told them how people who are homeless often have no one to turn to for help. Mr. Pfleiderer explained that human beings have choices and used his life experience to show how easily one could become addicted to alcohol and drugs, and even become homeless due to their choices. “But,” he said, “The knowledge of Jesus and his love can help the lives of homeless people to change so they are no longer homeless.” He advised them to only approach homeless people with an adult. He thanked the children for their donations to the ministry and for the Hot Cross Buns that they made for them for Maundy Thursday.

Disney Dreamers and Doers

There is still time to apply for the Disney Dreamers and Doers Program!  All submissions must be returned to the Academic Office by Monday, April 20, to be considered for this award. Since 1984, Walt Disney World Resort has collaborated with local school districts to identify and recognize young people who have demonstrated excellence in their schools and communities. The Christ School is pleased to continue to recognize students for the many ways they are engaged in making their world, and our world, a better place.  In an effort to encourage students to personally express the pride they feel for their positive actions, we ask that students self-nominate, and select any teacher to champion their application.  Students selected as the Disney Dreamer and Doer at each school will be considered for selection as a Shining Star.  A Disney judging panel will select three exceptional Shining Stars by county (Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk, and Seminole), to represent elementary, middle and high school. Those selected will be announced May 8, 2015.
