Solar System

On Friday, May 31st, the seventh grade science students, with the help of science teacher Mrs.Kuplen,  presented the solar system to the parents. Students worked in pairs to create a layer of the sun and planet. On the day of the presentation, the students presented their models along with a short definition about their planet and sun part. They also put together a little ditty to the tune of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”  As each student presented, they added a piece to the solar system, eventually creating our entire solar system.

Reflections from the Dominican Republic

The 8th grade class trip to the Dominican Republic was an absolutely amazing experience.  The entire trip was an example of God’s grace and how it transcends cultures, languages and life’s circumstances.  Our students, parents and teachers worked with Mission Emanuel to help provide a solid floor and refurbished walls to Andrea, a member of the Cielo community.  They also spent a significant amount of time building relationships with the children in the community-showing God’s love through play and laughter.  At the end of the week, we got a chance to visit a Leprosarium where our hearts were touched so deeply by the residents of that community.  Our students were able to stretch out of a comfort zone and truly show the love of Christ to these people.  It truly was a blessed week.

Second Grade Enrichment Visits Shamu

The 2nd grade Odyssey of the Mind team visited Sea World as a continuation of their “Top Seacret Discoveries” lesson. The morning started off with the educational experience of an Ocean Discovery class that included learning about whales and dolphins and gaining an appreciation for all living creatures and habitats. The students enjoyed learning about the One Ocean Show with Shamu and the day ended with a journey to The Lost City of Atlantis.

Art Contest Winner

Sixth grade student, Nicholas Millard, was awarded first place for the middle school category of the 2012-13 Education Guide Art Contest. This year’s theme was “The Importance of Saving for a Brighter Future” and over 800 entries from a 5-county area were judged on adherence to theme, creativity and technique. With his cash award, Nicholas plans to sponsor a boy through World Vision.

It’s Showtime!

Our Middle School students from the elective “It’s Showtime” have worked hard all semester to put together Seussical the Musical.  We are excited to be able to present the show at three different times.  There will be two daytime opportunities for students to see the production.  We encourage lower school parents to join their student’s class for the production.  There will be one evening performance.  As space is limited, we ask that students and adults who have attended Wednesday and Thursday matinees allow others to attend the evening performance.  For the evening performance, we will have a limited number of general seating tickets available for pick-up at The Christ School office on Monday, May 20th.  There will be a reserved area for parents of the students participating.  Additional tickets will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

Fifth Grade Explores Our State Capital

Fifth grade students and parents were introduced to the old and new capitol buildings, a Catholic mission to the Apalachee Indians, the Museum of Florida History, the governor’s mansion, an 1890’s Big Bend farm and a zoo, and a riverboat tour of Wakulla Springs. They were busy every minute and even took in an IMAX documentary on the monarch butterfly one evening. They enjoyed the togetherness of the bus ride and were fine ambassadors for The Christ School.

Middle School Life Science

Thank you to Palmer Feed Store for partnering with TCS middle school and allowing chicks to be borrowed for Life Science lab learning.  Students learned how to properly hold the chicks, taught the chicks how to drink, watched their adult wings emerge and the chicks learn to fly. It is a fun and enhanced learning experience for all the science classes to have extra “friends” for the week, but it is really great for the Life Science classes who are learning the taxonomic classes of animals.

Head of School Selected for Prestigious Fellowship

Head of School Jason Powell Ed.D. has been selected by the Van Lunen Center for Executive Management in Christian Schools at Calvin College for a 2013-2014 fellowship. He will be among educators from twenty-two schools across the United States and Canada.

The Fellows program is designed for school heads who seek professional development in their work as administrators of faith-based schools. The Van Lunen Center was established at Calvin in January 2007 and now operates with a $2.5 million endowment gift to the college from the Richard D. Van Lunen Foundation and additional funding from foundations and individual donors. Its purpose is to provide executive management education for senior leaders of schools based on the historic Christian faith (of which there are some 20,000 across the North American continent).

“Through case studies, reading, writing, interactive exercises, small group discussions, a school based project, and coaching,” Bruce Hekman, director of the Van Lunen Center said, “participants will deepen their own leadership, develop skills essential to the tasks of headship, and create deep relationships with peers and leaders. They will become more deeply prepared to craft and implement a sustainable Christian educational mission with parents, teachers and other supporting communities.”

An emphasis was placed on God’s grace and the necessity to forgive our enemies. The students shared a variety of their gifts including singing, playing the guitar, playing the piano and reciting poetry.

Disney Dreamers and Doers

We have an opportunity to nominate 2 students from The Christ School (one lower school and one middle school) for the 2013 Disney Dreamers and Doers Program.  To be considered for this honor, students must self-nominate and ask a teacher to endorse their application.  Students self-nominate by writing a paragraph of 300 words or less about something they have done at home, in school, or in their community that has inspired others and makes our world a better place. Please see your teacher or Mrs. Ryan for a self-nomination form. The deadline for submitting self-nomination forms is Friday, April 19

Fourth Grade Students Participate in Viva Florida 500

Last Thursday, the Orange County Administrative Center hosted a Viva Florida 500 event celebrating the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de Leon’s arrival on the Florida coast. This was an exciting day for our fourth grade students who are studying Florida history.  The students drew pictures to be included in a time capsule that represent the year 2063 – the year the time capsule is scheduled to be opened.

SAT Continues This Week

Here are some tips to help your children do their best:

  • Be sure students are on time each day.  The classrooms are open at 7:50 a.m. and students are encouraged to use the window of time prior to chapel to settle in for the day.  This helps set the tone for a calm and successful day.
  • Prepare a healthy breakfast including some protein.
  • Assure students that they are smart and well prepared. There is nothing to do to “cram” for the SAT.
  • Remind them of the importance of taking their time and doing their best.  Since the SAT is untimed, there is no need to rush.
  • Help students select a good book to read when they finish testing.  They may need to remain quiet while others finish.

For more information, please contact Kristi Ryan.

TCS Supports Children’s Tumor Foundation

Each year TCS raises funds for various organizations through our Cashual Days. This year, one of the organizations that we supported is near and dear to our hearts – The Children’s Tumor Foundation.

TCS student, Lilly Ann Brooks, has been an active spokesperson for NF for many years. She and her father, Bill Brooks, have been instrumental in raising awareness and funds to support The Children’s Tumor Foundation and its fundraising efforts. You can learn more about Lilly Ann’s role and her passion for Jesus Christ at: http://www.ctf.org/R4R-Southeast/FL-Lilly-Ann-Brooks.html .

The Christ School raised $600 (over twice what was raised through any other Cashual Day this year) to benefit The Children’s Tumor Foundation. Thank you for your support of this wonderful young lady and her work with such a great cause.

The luncheon will begin at 11:45 a.m. in King Parlor.  Please contact Stacey Dilley to RSVP or return the registration form and payment to The Christ School office.
