Congressional Award Winner

Congratulations to TCS 8th grade student Sierra Tagman, who has earned a Bronze Congressional Medal.  The award will be presented to Sierra by Congressman Daniel Webster on Monday, May 9 at 8:15 a.m. at our morning chapel.

The Congressional Award is the United States Congress’ award for young Americans. It is non-partisan, voluntary, and non-competitive. The program is open to all young people ages 14 to 23. Participants can earn Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Certificates and Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Medals. Each level involves setting goals in four program areas; Volunteer Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration. The Congressional Award is not an award for past accomplishments. Instead, recipients are honored for achieving their own challenging goals.

To earn her award, Sierra challenged herself and completed tasks in each of the required categories.  For the Public Service category, she volunteered at the VA Hospital in Winter Park and volunteered at The Christ School’s summer program, Summer in the City. For the Personal Development category, she practiced her favorite instrument, the guitar, and performed in The Christ School’s chapel praise band.  For the Physical Fitness category, she played volleyball at The Christ School and as a member of the Winter Park Volleyball Club team.  For the Expedition/Exploration category, she explored Bejing China and visited the Great Wall, and New York City including making her way to the Crown of the Statue of Liberty.

Working on the Congressional Award allowed me to develop as a person and helped me improve my community and my country,” says Sierra.

“The Christ School is proud of Sierra Tagman for her commitment to learning; setting goals and challenging herself,” says Dr. Jason Powell, The Christ School’s Head of School. “We commend her for being an others-oriented leader, and for sharing her gifts and talents with our students.”  Powell continues, “It is an honor to have Congressman Webster visit our campus to present the Congressional Medal to Sierra. We are excited to introduce him to our students.”

Congressman Daniel Webster is a family man and small business owner who is dedicated to serving Central Florida with honor and integrity. Webster is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (2010-present), where he serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, including the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit; Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipe-lines and Hazardous Materials; and the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment. During his time in the Florida Legislature (1980-2008), Webster served as the Speaker of the Florida House and Majority Leader in the Florida Senate, working to pass sweeping reforms in Florida that were based on solid governing principles. Daniel and Sandy Webster have been blessed with six children, and eleven wonderful grandchildren. Known for many things, Daniel Webster holds his faith, his family, and his principles as his biggest assets.

Lessons in Leadership

Our Yearbook staff held a recognition ceremony on May 2, in which Ansley Dalton and Gabi Fatigati, outgoing Co-Editors-in-Chief of the 2016 yearbook, tapped three rising middle school staffers to lead the creation of next year’s book. 7th grade students Ellie Bostedo and Sydney Wall were selected to serve as the Co-Editors-in-Chief of the 2017 edition of Paw Prints. Sixth grade student Peyton Kimble will serve a year in apprenticeship as the staff’s Assistant Editor.

Ellie, Sydney and Peyton, along with fellow 7th grade staffer Emma Micciche, will attend Yearbookpalooza, Herff Jones’ three-day summer leadership workshop for yearbook editorial boards from across the state of Florida. The Christ School team will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on classes taught by yearbook journalism professionals from throughout the country.

Exploring the Election Process

Last week in Library class, students participated in two Florida state reading programs: the Florida Reading Association (FRA) and Sunshine State Young Reader Award (SSYRA) programs. Grades K-2 listened to eight specific picture books throughout the year, and voted on their favorite picture book using a picture ballot.  Students in grades 3 – 8 who read at least three of the fifteen selected books in their grade levels and passed the AR test on each were awarded the opportunity to participate in the SSYRA vote for the Best Fiction Book of the year. Election officials from the Orange County Supervisor of Elections office came to the TCS campus, presented official voting ballots to the students and explained how to vote. They also brought in a real ballot machine to collect the students’ votes. The votes cast by our students were forwarded to Tallahassee, where they will be counted in the state election in which the favorite fiction books for grades 3-5 and 6-8 will be chosen. Students are anxiously awaiting to election results in mid-April!

This was a wonderful hands-on experience that encouraged our young readers and allowed them to explore the election process.

1st Kayla Costin: Which Catapult throws the farthest?
2nd Gabi Fatigati: Which temperature of water allows Dry Ice to sublimate the fastest?
3rd: Stephanie Towle: Which footwear allows for the highest high jump?
4th: Marilyn Waldrop: Which wakesurf board size allows for the longest ride?
Our 7th grade winners are:
1st place: Dylan Umpierre: Which Florida grass filters pollutants out of water the best?
2nd place: Caden Kramer: Does chewing gum help reduce bacteria in your mouth?

4th place: Emma Micciche:  Does color effect taste?

Discovering Ancient Greece

Ms. Kerlek’s 6th grade students have been studying ancient Greece. The students were asked to choose one of twelve Olympian Greek gods and goddesses and write a research report that included information about the god/goddess such as genealogy, his or her powers, myths associated with them, and the temple constructed for them. Next, the students created a 3D likeness of their god /goddess, and made a “fun facts” card to attach to their project. Students presented their projects and research facts to their classmates. Their gods and goddesses, along with their fun facts, are currently on display in the middle school hallway.

Morning Carpool

Due to heavier traffic on Church Street, we have been experiencing longer morning carpools recently.  A street closure on Central Blvd. under I-4 has caused many motorists to use Church Street as an alternate route. We expect traffic to subside after April 15, when Central Blvd. will open again.  To ensure that our carpool is as safe and efficient as possible, we would like to remind you of these morning carpool procedures.

  • The Christ School will be open at 7:50 a.m. to welcome students (with the exception of enrolled early care students beginning at 7:00 a.m.). Enter campus for carpool from Jackson Street.
  • Please arrive in carpool by 8:10 a.m. Teachers bring their students to the sanctuary immediately following carpool, and all cars must be clear of the Angel Wing at that time. Staying on schedule is key to starting the day off right for the teachers and students.
  • Have your child packed and ready to exit the car.
  • Keep your eyes on the staff and safety patrols who are running carpool. Due to the glare on the windshields, it is often difficult to see the driver’s face. The staff and safety patrols will wave you forward or signal you to stop.
  • Wait until a patrol opens your car door before allowing your child to exit the car.
  • Drivers, please refrain from any cell phone or other technology usage (including ear pieces) once carpool has started. The children are at risk if you are using a device.
  • If you are walking your child onto campus, be sure to park in a legal parking spot and feed the meter.
  • Ensure that you have a direct line of sight with a TCS staff person prior to releasing your child from your care if you are walking your child onto campus. Please do not drop off your child in the street or from curbside areas around the campus.
  • Unless your child is enrolled in early care, please wait until 7:50 a.m. to drop your child off for school. Parental supervision is required until school opens at 7:50 a.m. If you wish to wait with your child under the Angel Wing, there are benches available.

7th & 8th Grade Science Fair

The Christ School’s 7th and 8th grade Science Fair will be held on Thursday, March 10, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.  The Science Fair allows students to experience and appreciate the process by which scientists acquire knowledge and to engage in a hands-on scientific experiment. Students began the process by considering a science question that interested them. Our 7th grade students focused on life science and our 8th grade students focused on physical science. The students then determined a plausible answer to their questions through research and whether their suggested answer could be practically tested. Some examples of projects this year include: Does aged meat taste better than non-aged meat? Which type of Florida grass filters pollutants out of water the best? Is the five second rule really true?

Preparing for the Dominican Republic

In preparation for the Dominican Republic mission trip, the eighth grade Bible class listened intently as Emily Luker with Middle School Student Ministry at FPCO, shared her personal experiences from summer mission trips to the DR. Emily has been privileged to travel five times with summer projects and sponsors a young woman who lives there. Emily challenged the eighth grade students to prepare their hearts for God to do great things in and through them. She also shared that she never expected the DR to feel like a second home, but it does and she loves every minute she has spent there. She described it as a place you are “free to be yourself” and that the students will experience being exhausted and empty, yet full because of God’s work in them. The students are also preparing to share details about their upcoming mission trip with their 4th grade Bible Buddies this Thursday and will have the opportunity to visit other lower school classrooms in teams of two to talk about their trip on Friday.

Apply for Disney Dreamers and Doers

There is still time for your child to apply for the Disney Dreamers and Doers Program! Since 1984, Walt Disney World Resort has collaborated with local school districts to identify and recognize young people who have demonstrated excellence in their schools and communities. The Christ School is pleased to continue to recognize students for the many ways they are engaged in making their world, and our world, a better place. In an effort to encourage students to personally express the pride they feel for their positive actions, we ask that students self-nominate, and select any teacher to champion their application. The self-nomination form is due no later than February 17.

Students chosen as the Disney Dreamer and Doer at each school will be considered for selection as a Shining Star.  A Disney judging panel will select three exceptional Shining Stars per county (Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk, and Seminole), to represent elementary, middle and high school.  Shining Star announcements will be made on March 31, 2016.

Zentangle Landscapes

Students in 6th grade art learned about the history of landscapes, as well as how the subject of landscapes in art changed as society changed. The elements of landscape art including foreground, middle and background were explored in addition to how to create the illusion of distance. These multi-layered landscapes were then filled in with a variety of zentangles.
Zentangles are similar to doodles and require the artist to be creative with lines and shapes. Each zentangle is done in permanent ink, therefore “mistakes” simply become a new variation within the design. Completed designs were water-colored utilizing various watercolor techniques learned in class.

5th Grade Visits Tallahassee

Article by Andrew, 5th grade student
On January 14, TCS 5th grade students visited Tallahassee to learn more about our state’s government. We started our trip with a boat ride through the waters of Wakulla Springs. We spotted a lot of interesting animals and plants, and learned about the area’s history. My class even spotted three manatees! Next, we went to the Tallahassee Museum. First, we visited Big Bend Farm, where our group learned about living on a farm in the 1800’s. We had the opportunity to see, and sometimes pet, the animals living there. We then walked on the museum’s boardwalk, which led us around the property to see animal habitats. My favorite animal exhibit was the Florida panther. The Florida State fans were happy when we had the chance to drive by the campus on our way to dinner at Bucca de Beppo. That evening we went to see a 3-D iMax movie about humpback whales. The next day we woke up early to visit the new capitol building where we met Senate President Andy Gardiner and a lobbyist. My class toured the Senate President’s office and asked him many questions. We then stepped back in time as we visited Mission San Luis. We learned about the Spanish missionaries and Apalachee natives in the area, and we saw their traditional homes. Ms. Forbes’ homeroom also learned how to shoot various weapons- don’t worry, they didn’t really shoot them. Our last stop was at the old capitol. There, we learned about the changes in the building and explored the different branches by participating in a scavenger hunt. I had a lot of fun on the trip!
