The Christ School (TCS) Curriculum

The Christ School is an independent Christian school whose educational program is focused on rigorous and relevant academics and a strong Biblical base.

TCS subscribes to a philosophy of education that enables a student to develop a strong academic foundation and demonstrate a Christian view of God, man and the world. Focused daily instruction in the core subjects shows a commitment to academics, while daily chapel and Bible instruction stress the importance of the Christian perspective.  Students at TCS also have many opportunities for service to the community as a part of their total education.

The curriculum at TCS is standards-based; that is, there are established standards or outcomes that students are expected to achieve in each subject at each grade level. These standards are the “taught” curriculum and are aligned with state standards and with standards established by leading national educational organizations.  Textbooks and other materials and resources make up the tools used for instruction.  Both informal (i.e. class participation, individual questioning, daily classroom activities) and formal measures (i.e. quizzes, tests, performance tasks, projects) of assessment are used to evaluate student progress.  Reporting to parents is done on a quarterly basis.

While the curriculum is constantly under review for improvement and alignment with instruction and assessment, there is a formal schedule for review of each core subject (Language Arts [includes Reading, Writing, Spelling], Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Bible) on a rotating basis.  During the formal review, the curriculum standards are evaluated, updated and/or revised, new textbooks and related curriculum materials are reviewed and purchased, and ancillary resources are sought and acquired as necessary.

Each year in the spring, students in first through eighth grades are given a standardized achievement test, the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT), to assess how well they are achieving in comparison to other students at their same grade level nationwide.  The results of this annual assessment serve as a guide in the ongoing review of the school’s curriculum as well as the overall academic program of The Christ School.
