The Christ School’s middle school class trips are an important extension of their academic experience. This February, our 8th grade students will travel to the Dominican Republic to explore this foreign country, serve others from a completely different walk of life, and exemplify Christ through their service, alongside friends, family, and teachers. Please help our 8th grade students raise funds to help defer the cost of their trip.

There are many common misconceptions about Dyslexia. Most people still think it is just a “reversal thing” where children mix up b’s and d’s. Many think tutoring will be a quick fix. Thankfully, there has been a lot of research by scientists studying Dyslexia and we know so much more than we did just a few years ago. Thanks to extraordinary progress in brain imaging, scientists better understand how the brain works and how brains differ in dyslexic readers. It is important to remember that Dyslexia is a neurobiological disorder. There are structural differences in the brains of people with and without reading disabilities. The research is fascinating. Within the Student Support Center, we strive to make sure that our students have a positive school experience and become self-advocates so they can explain to teachers what they need to be successful. This week’s article shares a little more about common misconceptions and shares what research says about children with Dyslexia.

Aline Gressel, our morning receptionist always greets everyone with a bright smile. “I am very excited and grateful to be at TCS,” says Aline. “My favorite thing about being at TCS is working around people that are always friendly and happy. Everyone is so helpful and kind. I love my role here because I have the pleasure of greeting students every morning as they come into the school. I love seeing how happy they are to be at school!

Aline was born and raised in Mexico City and moved to the United States for college. “My husband, Justin, and I have been married for almost twenty years and we have two boys that we adore; Alan, a TCS alumnus who is in 9th grade, and Eric, a TCS Lion in 6th grade. As a family we love going to amusement parks and to the beach on weekends. We love living in Orlando because of all of the fun things there are to do.”

“TCS has had a huge impact on our son Alan’s success transitioning into high school,” says Aline. “Academically, he is very well prepared. The spiritual foundation he was given at TCS has helped him overcome obstacles and different situations in positive ways.  My hope for our son Eric is that he will be challenged academically, strengthened spiritually and that he will make great friendships during his middle school years here at TCS.”

Congratulations to Connor Umpierre, Cole Gullikson and Layla Webb for participating in the Trinity Prep Invitational HS Varsity/Junior Varsity Cross Country Meet on Wednesday, October 3. These three athletes represented TCS in a meet that included over 300 runners from 19 schools.  All three of them finished with their personal best times for a 5K!

TCS 8th grade students have been learning about the issue of poverty in Bible class. As Christians, God has called us to serve the poor, but how is that done in a way that will truly alleviate poverty and not just treat the symptoms? In this unit, Mr. Davis and the 8th grade students have been doing the hard work of answering that question. This lesson included a look at homelessness and what is being done locally in Orlando. The students also learned about poverty on a global scale through the award winning film, PovertyCure. This lesson took into account what Jesus said about serving the poor, the root causes of poverty, the effects of international aid, the roles of the church and government, and how business can transform communities from impoverished to thriving. The students enjoyed having Dr. David Swanson, Senior Pastor at FPCO, as a guest speaker in their classroom to discuss homelessness in Orlando and the end of the year service trip to the Dominican Republic. The students had a lot of questions and heard insights that come from first-hand experience of his leadership in this area. Overall, this was a fruitful time learning more about God’s word and how that leads us to love him and love others.

TCS 1st grade students have been learning about communities and community helpers. They learned about goods, services, producers and sellers. As a group, they created their own community model and determined what types of businesses, residences, and services their community would need. The students constructed each of the buildings out of boxes and added roads and landscapes as the final touches to their project. It was fun to listen to them collaborate as they discovered they needed a fire station, a vet, schools, and even a Publix! Each student also chose a community helper to research, and created a poster about their helper. They concluded their lesson by dressing up like their community helper and presenting their poster to their parents. Enjoy photos on our Facebook page.

Congratulations to our middle school girls’ volleyball Green Team who completed their season on Tuesday night at the Greater Orlando Athletic Conference tournament.  Coach Mark Marshall led the team to a number three ranking out of nine teams.  Way to go Lions!

Middle School
Volleyball Gold Team will play in the semi finals of the Greater Orlando Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday, October 4. The match begins at 4:30 pm at Trinity Prep.  (5700 Trinity Prep Ln, Winter Park, FL 32792).  If they win, they will play in the championship match immediately following their match on Thursday.

Middle school boys’ basketball tryouts will take place in the gym this Friday, October 5, from 3:45 to 5:00 pm.  Students must be registered to participate. The following paperwork must be completed and turned in to the school office before attending tryouts:   FHSAA physical form, FHSAA consent form and TCS waiver.

TCS 8th-grade physical science students were asked to create a “Rube Goldberg” machine to complete a simple task through a complex series of steps of 6-8 steps. Each step had to involve a transfer of energy that powered the next step. Last week, they demonstrated their machines to their classmates. The machines flipped coins, popped balloons, played music on a computer, rang bells, fed a dog, placed trash into a bag, created chemical reactions, and more! Here is a video of a machine in action! October is Dyslexia Awareness Month! We celebrate the accomplishments of our students with dyslexia every day. They are hard working, intelligent children who we are honored to teach! Throughout the month of October I will share information about Dyslexia that I hope all families will find useful. These strategies actually benefit all children. Many people with dyslexia struggle with remembering. That is why one of the early signs of Dyslexia in a young student is the tendency to sound out a word and know it when reading a passage, but the child has to sound it out all over again when the same word is encountered a few lines later in the story. The word did not get stored in the child’s memory. Learning to read and spell, as well as many other school tasks, require memory. That is why a child with Dyslexia needs the same material presented multiple times. In the Student Support Center, we strive to make those repetitions fun as well as memorable, using many kinesthetic methods. Gel boards, “swatting” letter tiles, textured letters and trampoline drills all play a role in helping the child store information in his or her long term memory. When practicing at home, try to incorporate some hands-on methods. You and your child will both benefit from the fun learning experience.

With the enhancement of The Christ School’s Enrichment program, we are pleased to welcome Enrichment teacher, Dr. Leah Lerma. “I love having the opportunity to develop a curriculum that is tailored toward this special group of students and their unique learning needs,” says Leah. “The enrichment classes at TCS incorporate project-based learning to explore a variety of topics. The projects and daily activities encourage critical thinking, team work, and presentation skills. The students have spent the first quarter learning about pollinators. This week, we are excited to have a beekeeper come to our classroom so the students can learn first-hand from a professional in the field.”

Leah, who was born in Ft. Lauderdale, earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Linguistics from the University of Florida.  She earned her doctorate degree in Education from UCF. “After I graduated with my Master’s degree, I moved to Orlando and worked with Orange County Public Schools as a 7^th grade language arts teacher for five years. I then served as an elementary and middle school teacher with Florida Virtual School. Currently, I am also an adjunct instructor with the College of Education at Grand Canyon University.”

“I’ve always had a passion for helping others,” says Leah. “My involvement in student government in high school ignited my passion for volunteering and serving the community, so choosing a career in education came easy to me. I love watching the progress my students make, and it always excites me to think about how I can develop a lesson that my students will be enthusiastic about. While I was teaching at Avalon Middle School, I was given the opportunity to design and implement a school-wide reading program. Having this opportunity inspired my passion for curriculum development, and that is when I began working on my doctorate degree. Designing curriculum and making the learning experience exciting and meaningful for the students is very rewarding.”

Leah and her husband, Nelson, have two children. “Our daughter, Mia, is in Kindergarten at TCS, and our son, Bennett, is a little lion in training at The Weekday School. We also have a yorkie named Bailey who is turning 12 this month,” she says.

“TCS is such a special place to be,” says Leah. “I feel blessed to be surrounded by staff members who truly care and students who are eager to learn. It’s a privilege to teach at the same school my children attend, and running into them throughout the day definitely puts a smile on our faces!  I am very happy that our daughter is part of a community that encourages kindness. I love that TCS teaches the students to love one another and to serve the community. This lays such wonderful foundation in strengthening their relationship with Christ.”

This week I am sharing some “local learning” opportunities for parents and teachers of children that are gifted, dyslexic, or both! They are happening on the same weekend, so if you have a “twice exceptional” child you can choose which is most relevant to your needs. State conferences like these are a wonderful way to hear from experts in the field, network with families like yours and see the latest research and resources which may be highly meaningful to your child. The Florida Association for the Gifted is holding their annual conference on October 5 & 6, close to I-Drive. This organization is a fantastic resource if you are looking for support regarding your gifted learner. Also, the Florida International Dyslexia Association Conference will be held on October 6 at the Florida Mall Hotel. The conference theme is Dispelling Myths and Supplying Solutions. I will be in attendance and am excited to bring back new strategies and information to share with our families.

Mary Ann Berlin, Student Support Teacher, greets everyone she sees with a warm and welcoming smile. Her friendly nature, along with her passion for teaching, makes her a wonderful addition to our TCS family!

Mary Ann grew up in Venice, Florida, and attended The University of Florida, where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Special Education. “I have been a special education teacher for over 30 years, leaving the classroom for several years to spend time with our two children,” she says. “Throughout the years, I have been an ESE Resource Teacher, a teacher for self-contained classes of special needs students, a Crisis Intervention Teacher, and a Staffing Coordinator for special education programs and students. In addition, I have enjoyed teaching 7^th Grade Religion, tutoring, coordinating parent-teacher workshops, and working on school accreditation teams.”

“I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember,” says Mary Ann. “My mother was the administrative assistant to the principal of our Catholic school for many years, so, a strong, faith-filled school community has always been a major part of my life. Working with children with various learning styles filled my heart during my internships and college practicums. Being able to help students reach their own potential and be joyful for their achievements is an amazing experience and one I knew I wanted to continue in my adult life.”

“Being asked to join the Student Support Center and The Christ School family is an exciting opportunity!” she says. “I have been enjoying developing this supportive and enriching program for our students with our wonderful team in the Student Support Center. I would love each student and family of our Student Support Center to know and believe that we can be proud of our differences and celebrate our uniqueness. I am blessed to live this message and share it, as I watch our children grow and become more confident while meeting their individual needs. It is a joy for me to work with our students each day and to be a part of such a kind, supportive, enthusiastic, and positive school family.”

Mary Ann and her husband, Bob, have two grown children, Jonathan, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and Alicia, a nurse. “Most recently, we have been blessed with our first beautiful grandson, Jacob, who is an absolute joy and is already loved immensely by his family!” she says “When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, outings to the beach, baking, and shopping.”

“One of my favorite bible verses is Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” says Mary Ann. “This verse in on the wall in our classroom and is the focal point, as soon as you enter the room. It has been a constant reminder for me in my personal life, for all of my life. I believe it is so necessary for our students to remember as well. Each one of us is a masterpiece created by God and unique in our own way.”

In order for you to have a more enjoyable experience in carpool please note these important reminders:

• Every car must have a TCS ID tag to enter campus. TCS can make more tags for you.
• There are no TCS staff in the Angel Wing area before 7:45 am. Please do not drop off children before 7:45 am. The school doors open at 7:50 am.
• Morning carpool begins at 7:50 am and ends at 8:10 am. We encourage you to come earlier within that window rather than later.
• Carpool gates close at 8:10 am sharp every morning. It is very important for us to start our day on time.
• Afternoon carpool begins at 3:15 pm. Campus opens to TCS traffic at 3:10 pm.
• Afternoon carpool for TK-5th grades is 3:15-3:35 pm.
• Afternoon carpool for 6-8th grades is 3:35 -3:50 pm. Please wait until 3:35 pm to arrive to pick up middle school students, as they are still in class until that time.
• Please do not stop your car on Jackson in an active traffic lane and wait for 3:10 pm, you will block traffic.
• Please do not enter the Methodist Church lot to park or drive through.
• Stopping in the active traffic lanes around campus to drop off or pick up children is not authorized by TCS and presents a danger to your children and the general public.
• If you are not going to walk your children to the door, please watch and make sure they have entered the building before you leave.
• Please follow security guard directions.
• Know that security guards and TCS staff cannot always see into your car through the windshield due to glare and may not see your face or wave.

The flag football clinic for TK to 2nd grade students is open for online registration. The deadline to register is this Friday, September 21. Once registration is full, your child will put on a standby list. The 5 week clinic will take place on the green space from 3:15 to 4:15 pm on the following dates: September 26, October 3, 10, 17 and 24.

With the opening of our Student Support Center, our TCS family keeps growing!  We are pleased to welcome Jennie Farrant to TCS.  Jennie serves as an Intensive Reading teacher.  “I have been in education for over ten years in a variety of capacities,” she says. “I started my teaching career as a first grade teacher before deciding to focus on serving students with learning differences. From there, I have worked as a tutor, a teacher at a school for dyslexic learners, an assistive technology trainer for college students, and a co-teacher. I feel like I have done it all!”

“I guess you could say teaching is in my blood,” says Jennie. “Both of my parents are retired teachers, and I can still remember going to my dad’s classroom when I was little. I would rearrange the desks and pass out books and pretend I was the teacher. I can still recall how much joy it brought me!”

“After college, I planned to go into the field of Educational Psychology and work as a school psychologist or counselor, Jennie continues. “However, I quickly realized I wanted a career where I could work with students daily and build deeper relationships with them. While working with preschool students with special needs, I realized I had a heart for the students and was inspired to pursue a teaching certificate in Interrelated Special Education from UGA. Reading and language arts are my loves, so I later returned to school to get my masters degree in Reading Education. Down the road, I got a job teaching at a school specifically for dyslexic learners and began training with the Academy of Orton-Gillingham. This really ignited my passion for working with students who struggle with reading and has equipped me to support them.”

Jennie says, “At The Christ School, I love having the opportunity to work with students in small groups and really focus on their needs and how I can best teach them. There is no greater fulfillment as a teacher than in seeing my students learn and grow and hearing words like, ‘I used to hate reading, but now I love it!’ That warms my heart and is why I do what I do! I also love seeing my students grow in confidence. I want them to know that God has made them so uniquely and perfectly and to be confident in that.”

“I have so enjoyed working at TCS,” says Jennie. “I have an amazing team in the Student Support Center, and it brings me such joy to work alongside them each day.  It already feels like a little family!”

“One of the other things I love about teaching at TCS is the opportunity to be in the same building as my family each day,” she says. “I know our two boys are being loved on and taught with excellence each and every day. My greatest hope for them is to grow in their love for God so they can then love others. We have a sign in our house that says, ‘Love God. Love People. The End.’ That about sums it up!”

Jennie was born and raised in the metro Atlanta area. “I have loved being a Floridian for the last year and a half,” she says. “I am all about the warm weather! My parents and three siblings still live in the Atlanta area. We are able to visit each other often since it is not too far away. A fun fact is that I have a twin sister! We are fraternal twins and could not be more different. She is very outdoorsy and loves horses, while you are more likely to find me curled up with a book or shopping.”

“My husband, Aaron, and I have been married for sixteen years,” says Jennie. “We have two boys, Eli (TCS 4^th grade Lion ) and Austin (TCS 1^st grade Lion), who bring immeasurable joy to our lives! We love playing games as a family.”

Jennie shares her favorite Bible verse:
“My favorite passage of Scripture is Philippians 4:4-9. I have it written on an index card so I can read it regularly. I especially love verses 6-7 because they remind me to turn my worries over to God and His peace that passes ALL understanding will guard my heart and mind.” she says.

Looking for ways for your child to serve in the community AND reach their goal for volunteer hours? Throughout the year, our middle school boys and girls will have the opportunity to serve lunch during the school day at two locations in our community.  TCS middle school boys will serve lunch with their Houses at First Presbyterian Church of Orlando’s Gathering of Men, and TCS middle school girls have the opportunity to sign up to serve lunch at the Christian Service Center’s Daily Bread. Students will be accompanied by staff and are responsible for any missed class work. In addition, all middle school students are invited to sign up for after-school service opportunities at either Wesley Child Development Center (across the street) or at Magnolia Preschool here on campus, where they will serve the children and teachers through various activities. Students volunteering at the preschools will be accompanied by TCS staff to the serve locations and should be picked up at TCS at 4:35 pm. Please look over the schedule and sign up today! Sixth grade Earth Science students were given a STEAM challenge – design bridges! They worked in teams to design and build bridges strong enough to span a 50 cm “canyon” and strong enough to hold a 50-gram rock. The students could choose a limited number of materials from the “store,” which included straws, Popsicle sticks, clothespins, binder clips, string, tape and cups. “The students were very engaged in this challenge,” said their teacher, Mrs. Kleinsteuber. “I heard great ideas as the students brainstormed their plans and later tested and modified their designs. All of the bridges were successful, and the children were excited to create them and put them to the test!”

Lower school STEAM students are expanding their minds through puzzles and brain teasers. TK – first grade students have been learning how shapes can fit together and how different shapes can be put together in different ways to form pictures. They worked with Tangram puzzles on the STEAM Lab Viewboard, which has been mounted on sliding rails so the screen can be adjusted to different heights. Second through fifth grade students have been solving brain teasers. Using “How Many Squares” and “How Many Triangles” brainteasers, Mrs. Liu helped students discover that often there is more to a picture than what they first see, and when they take their time to look, they will be able to see things in different ways. This exercise helps them to think about alternatives and helps develop creativity and flexibility in thinking. The Christ School is delighted to welcome Ozel “Oz” Martin, our PE teacher and Middle School Boys’ Basketball Coach.  Oz is easy to recognize; just look for the guy with the bright smile and joyful personality.

“My parents were my role models of how to live and work hard through God’s word,” says Oz. “I started working with children and coaching at the local YMCA in 1995. There, I began a youth sports program called Legacy Youth Sports to mentor youth in Central Florida. The program still exists and serves many children in our community.”

“I never thought I would be a teacher or even a coach,” says Oz. “Even though I saw my dad do that very job my entire life as a principal and a coach of the kids in our neighborhood.”

“What I am most excited about my work at The Christ School is to be able to help each student make positive choices in their everyday life, school, home and community,” he says.  “I am happy to be working at TCS. Everyone here has been so helpful as I start my first school year,” says Oz. “The kind words, help, and prayers; what an amazing staff!”

Oz was born in Flint, Michigan, moved to Tallahassee, in 1983, and to Orlando in 1989. In 1991, he started a delivery service and sold his company in 2006. He still worked there for two years until he chose to put all of his energy into Legacy Youth Sports. “In my free time, I enjoy playing golf. I also enjoy working with young people and serving as a mentor,” he says.

“One of my favorite sayings is: ‘you can’t live a perfect day until you do something for someone who will never be able to repay you,'” he says.

Oz shares his favorite Bible verse: John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

We had a Diaper Dilemma in 5th grade! Our budding 5th grade scientists are learning about the steps to the scientific method and were recently tasked with the job to investigate and report on the most absorbent diaper. Over a span of a week, the children collaborated with their classmates as they researched and tested each of the three brands of diapers chosen. After they gathered their data, the results were in…there was a tie for first place between Up and Up and Pampers! Both classes wrapped up the activity by discussing what variables are and identifying those used in our activity and determining ways to ensure that data remains valid and reliable in future class experiments.

Ever feel anxious? Me, too. I keep Philippians 4:6-7 close to my heart, especially on challenging days. Many of our children experience times where they worry or are anxious. These times can be short-lived like when they are preparing to take a test or can be seen in some children for longer periods of time, such as if a child gets overwhelmed in social situations. Here is a great list of age-specific books that can help ease fears or worries. Reading them with your child also makes for a great bonding time. The Student Support Center has several great resources if you are interested in learning more strategies to help with anxiety or worry.

Many of our families know Lea Augustin from her cheerful morning greeting at our front desk last year or a friendly smile as a REACH leader. This past summer, Lea stepped up to another important role here at TCS, as our bookkeeper.

“I am currently working on my Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting at UCF,” says Lea. “I am a full-time student and work full-time work here at TCS. Although I am quite busy, I love my job here and being busy is worth it!”

Lea was born in Miami and raised in Fort Lauderdale. She moved to Orlando to attend UCF. When looking for a job to support her through school, Lea says, “I saw the position for REACH Aftercare Teacher and immediately applied. I have always had a strong passion for working with children and knew even though it wasn’t relative to my major, it was still something I wanted to pursue. After applying and getting the position, I worked with REACH for approximately 9 months. I began to fall in love with the atmosphere and everyone who was a part of the TCS family. I started helping out in any extra way that I possibly could just to maximize my time here. Little did I know, shortly after, TCS would become home for me as I became the bookkeeper, which aligns perfectly with my major. Since then, TCS has become a second family to me and I am so thankful for the opportunity to build my knowledge in my desired profession while working alongside such loving people. Although I spend a lot of time in the office, I love being able to walk around the school and see all my ‘not so little’ friends and hear the excitement that fills the halls.”

When not working or studying, Lea loves to travel and see various landscapes, experience different cultures, and meet new people.

Lea shares her favorite Bible verse: Timothy 4:12, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”

As our TCS kindergarten expands to three classrooms this year, we are delighted to welcome kindergarten teacher, Elizabeth Grady.  This is Elizabeth’s 4^th year of teaching.  Prior to coming to TCS, Elizabeth taught 4^th grade.  “I taught at the same school I attended from preschool to 8^th grade,” she says.”

Elizabeth says, “My husband, Stephen, and I just moved to Orlando from Boca Raton.  We live in College Park with our two boxers.  Stephen and I have been married for 2 1/2 years.  He was in the military for 8 years and is transitioning to a new job with PCL Construction.  I love traveling, boating, taking our dogs to the park, baking, and reading.  Stephen and I both went to Auburn University and are huge football fans; we try to make it back for at least one game every season.  We have 9 nieces and nephews who all live in the Orlando area, and we love getting to spend time with them!”

“I decided in 1st grade that I wanted to be a teacher,” says Elizabeth. “I had the most incredible teacher that year, and I wanted to be just like her!  I still keep in touch with her and love getting to share my teaching experiences with her.  She retired right after my first year of teaching and gave me a lot of her classroom decorations, so it’s fun to have those hanging in my classroom now.”

“I am excited about teaching kindergarten this year,” she says. “I love how new and exciting everything is for the students. They come in every day with big smiles on their faces ready to learn.  It has been so much fun getting to experience all of their school ‘firsts’ with them.  I also get LOTS of hugs throughout the day.”

Elizabeth continues, “I am really looking forward to seeing the progress they make with reading and writing.  They have told me many times how excited they are to learn how to read, so I can’t wait to help them progress!  I’ve also heard great things about the theater program we are going to do with our students this year – Three Piggy Opera – so I am excited to experience that as well!”

“I am delighted to be part of The Christ School team. I love how welcoming The Christ School family has been,” says Elizabeth. “It’s great to see how everyone really looks out for each other and is always ready to step in anytime someone needs help.  I also love being able to have Insomnia Cookies delivered anytime,” she smiles. “In addition to teaching, I will get to be a coach this year!” says Elizabeth. “I played volleyball for 10 years and am looking forward to coaching The Christ School’s 4th grade team.”
