TCS Dad Inspires Students

Sixth grade Earth Science students have been learning all about the water cycle, water erosion and deposition, and the many lakes, rivers, streams, and oceans we have here in Florida. They enjoyed a presentation on the Florida aquifer by Florida native and TCS dad Cameron Gordon, who explained the various layers of the aquifer, how the aquifer serves most of our freshwater here in Florida, and the importance of the Florida aquifer to Florida and the southeast region of the United States. The students will finish the unit with a research project on a Florida water body of their choosing and will incorporate how the Florida aquifer helps sustain that body of water.

Mr. Gordon, who is the operator of Mosquito County Enterprises, LLC,  also stopped by the middle school elective BOSS Club to speak to students about how to work towards their entrepreneurship dreams. He explained his journey of how he got to where he is today with his small business, including how his faith led him the entire way. Operating a small business is hard work, but rewarding when you follow your passions!

Welcome Grace Casper

Grace Casper is a new member of The Christ School kindergarten team, a daughter, sister, mother, wife, and most importantly a child of God. Grace has taught for 16 years spanning TK to college, but her favorites are 5 and 6 year olds. “Kindergarten is the BEST ever!” says Grace.

Grace and her husband Bob have one daughter, Sierra, (who attends The Christ School), one cat named Azul and one dog named Chip. Grace’s hobbies include reading, scrapbooking, and spending time with family and pets. In addition, Grace shares, “I am a native Spanish speaker and love my Mexican American heritage. I am fascinated with owls, they are amazing birds of prey. I have been collecting children’s books for over 15 years.  My personal library consists of over 3.000 children’s books and approximately 150 ABC books.”

Grace comes from a family of educators. Her mom was a Migrant Head Start teacher for over 20 years and five of her eight siblings were teachers. Grace adds, “I’ve always loved school and I see myself as a life-long learner.  I’ve spent half of my life pursuing education, from my days in kindergarten to obtaining a doctorate degree in Education in Curriculum and Instruction.  I love the curiosity of young children and absolutely LOVE watching them develop into amazing human beings.  I believe strongly in educating the whole child and walking the journey with them as they learn and develop emotionally, socially, spiritually, and academically.”

Grace’s college roommate from her study abroad program in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Mrs. Courtney Morgan (TCS Bridge teacher), introduced Grace to TCS. “When a kindergarten position opened up … I jumped!” “This school does so many amazing things for its students and families.  I am learning the culture of the school and I am very happy to be part of such a Christ-centered community.  I look forward to developing meaningful and deep relationships with my students and their families.

Grace’s favorite thing about TCS is all-school chapel! “It is such an amazing experience. Watching children praise the Lord literally gives me goosebumps!” Grace’s favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5-6. Welcome, Grace!

Welcome Kimberly Bell

Kimberly Bell is excited to be at TCS teaching 6th grade World History and Bible.  She has taught for over 30 years; kindergarten to middle school.  “The best part of teaching is watching students light up when they have conquered a new skill,” said Kim.  Getting to share God’s love and truth with students as they negotiate the adolescent years is what led Kimberly to teach middle school.  Kim was thrilled to experience the house reveal this year alongside her 6th graders, Go Wolfstride!

Kim was born and raised in Orlando.  She graduated from Boone High School and then received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in education from UCF.  After college Kim married her high school sweetheart, Charles.  They have 3 grown children: Emily, Jacob, and Melissa, who are all Noles. Currently their entertainment at home are 2 Cairn terriers, Cooper and Ashleigh.  The Bell’s have been active members at a few local Presbyterian churches where  Kim has served on Children Ministry teams and taught Sunday school.  Last year they began attending FPCO, after Charles came on staff.  The Bell family likes to gather in Homosassa to spend time together on the river.  Kim also loves to read and travel.

Get to Know Susan Porr

TCS, please welcome Mrs. Susan Porr, our first instrumental band teacher! Mrs. Porr grew up near Washington DC, in Virginia, and spent her childhood attending cultural events in the city. Being influenced by her love for the clarinet and the city’s opportunities, she sought out and was selected to play with the United States Army Band, “Pershing’s Own.”

Susan started teaching music as a junior in high school. Pairing her gifts of music and teaching, Susan received permission from her high school to leave campus and travel to various elementary schools teaching instrumental music to elementary students. Susan’s clarinet choir, made up of her students, performed at her wedding.

Susan and her husband, Walt, just celebrated their 40th anniversary at Disney World. Susan says, “Walt has been an amazing support to me and even started a new job just a block away from the school!”

Susan has enjoyed the incredible support she has received from The Christ School teachers and staff. She adds, “There is passion and excitement in the air! I have taught in public and private schools and TCS is very unique.” She is excited to help her students learn new skills in  instrumental music in preparation for musical performances. “I am hoping they will come to love it as much as I do,” says Susan. The Bible verse on Susan’s wedding ring is Psalm 127.

Welcome Mrs. Robin Kundrick to TCS!

Mrs. Kundrick joined the Student Support Team this year and also serves as a first grade assistant. “TCS is such a warm and welcoming community,” says Robin. “I have noticed the sincere compassion and truth that each TCS staff member shows toward students, parents, and each other daily.  TCS is truly a family of loving individuals with our Lord Jesus as their center guiding their hearts and minds each day.”

Robin is married to Glen, a man she describes as wonderful and patient. She has two “beautiful and brilliant” daughters and six sweet grandchildren. Robin describes herself as a crazy cat lover who also enjoys gardening, quilting, crafting, playing the piano and singing.

Both of Robin’s parents were educators. She gives them credit for helping her understand the impact educators make on their students and helping lead her into the profession.

“This year at TCS, I look forward to completing practicum training for OG (Orton Gillingham) as well as participating in upcoming Multisensory Math training to enhance my ability to support students at TCS.” says Robin.

Robin’s favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5.

Get to Know Jordan Greenia

TCS welcomes Jordan Greenia to our First Grade team! Jordan lives in Orlando with her husband, cat and dog. Their weekends are filled with playing board games and hosting movie nights in their home theater. Jordan is an experienced choreographer and enjoys working with a local production company of the Nutcracker. Sailing is also a top interest of hers.

Jordan remembers, “Growing up, I knew I wanted to work with children. Beginning my career, I served as an Early Head Start Home Visitor, at summer camps, and afterschool programs, but ultimately settled on classroom teaching. Education is an amazing opportunity to impact students’ love for learning they can carry with them throughout their life.”

Jordan has been teaching for four years and loves building relationships with her students and helping them to reach their goals. “The students impact me more each year than they could ever know.”  In addition to morning worship, Jordan is also enjoying The Christ School community. “I love the opportunities to collaborate across grade levels, teaching the whole child, and experiencing true joy in a school community. I am so grateful to be a part of this amazing team and I look forward to each day teaching here.”

Get to Know Kennedy Irwin

A big TCS welcome to Mrs. Kennedy Irwin, who joins our First Grade Team! Kennedy grew up in a small town in Illinois just outside of St. Louis, with two sisters and her parents. “My family always told me I would be a teacher one day as I often played ‘school’ with my little sisters. I went to college thinking I was going to be a biomedical engineer, but after sitting through my first college class I knew my heart was with the children in the classroom. I quickly changed my major.” Kennedy recalls. At Southeast Missouri State University, Kennedy ran cross country and track while studying to one day have a classroom of her own. After college, she moved to Oklahoma planning to go back to school for educational leadership and curriculum while teaching, but God had a greater plan. Shortly after moving to Oklahoma, Kennedy met her husband, Brad, who had just moved to Oklahoma from Florida. The couple married last November and moved to Florida in January to be closer to family. “God quickly reminded us we are not in control and has blessed us with our first baby who is due this December. In our spare time we love beach weekends with our golden retriever, Lacey, and vacations to the mountains with our families.” Kennedy adds.

Kennedy’s favorite part of teaching is witnessing ‘lightbulb moments’. At TCS, she loves worshiping with everyone during chapel and sharing the word of God with her students during Bible. In reflection, Kennedy recalls, “Teaching in public school, I felt something was missing in my day. Ultimately, it was God in the classroom and the ability to worship and talk about the word of God. I leave TCS everyday with a full heart and smile on my face because of the little moments throughout the day where we can pause and pray or talk about God.”

Kennedy has two favorite Bible verses: Joshua 1:9 and Psalms 139:14.

Get to Know – Lisa DuChateau, Director of Development

The Christ School is pleased to welcome Lisa DuChateau as our Director of Development. Lisa was born and raised in Orlando and is married to her husband Don. Together they share six children: Jacob 22, Christina 20, Zachary 18, Dylan 18, Elizabeth 15, and Carson 13. Needless to say, life is constantly busy! The family loves  to travel and often spend weekends exploring new places. Lisa is an avid walker and has played tennis since childhood.

When asked, “What drew you to the field of education?” Lisa responded, “I knew from a very young age that I wanted to work with children. In college, I found a passion to serve children with special needs and earned my degree in Exceptional Child Education, Specific Learning Disabilities, and went on to receive a masters in Elementary Education. After teaching for 15 years , I was asked to serve as the Development Director for my school and church and there began my journey in development.” Lisa continued, “Being in Development, I have the unique opportunity to share the mission of our school to our community. I love building relationships and  interacting with those who want to make a difference. Providing the opportunity for a donor to see the impact their gift makes not only for today, but for generations to come, is an honor.”

What led Lisa to TCS? Faith. Loving God is in everything TCS does. Community. TCS is a place where she can live out her passions…faith, education, helping children and sharing the mission of our school with our families and broader community.

Lisa looks forward to meeting families, interacting with students and being in community with colleagues. She added, “I am so blessed to have been given the opportunity to be a part of TCS. This truly is a beautiful place.” Lisa’s favorite Bible verse is Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto feet and a light unto my path.”

Introducing Marqetta Dollison

The Christ School is delighted to welcome Marqetta Dollison to our kindergarten team this year. Marqetta and her husband Tyrone have been married 11 years. They have 5 children; Tyrone III, who will be 8 in September, Naomi, age 6, Zoe, age 4, Noelle, age 2.5 yrs and Brielle, who will be 1 year old in September. “One of my love languages is quality time so I absolutely love spending time with my family and our family friends exploring and doing fun things together,” says Marqetta. “I am a vocalist and have been from a very young age. I love to make music, and sing worship. My husband is also a musician so it’s fun when we can make music together.”

Marqetta says, “I initially went to college thinking I would be an accountant. It wasn’t until a counselor I had my first year of college, observing my personality, challenged me on that. I realized then that most of my life up until that point was centered around kids (i.e. babysitting, tutoring programs, etc.). I am so grateful for that counselor and have her to thank for my amazing life because that one conversation led me to where I am today. I love connecting with the students and doing my part to help them become who God created them to be.”

“My favorite thing about teaching Kindergarten is the newness of the students,” she continues. “The freshness of their experience. They’re as excited and wide-eyed to be here as I am to teach them! I look forward to giving them a memorable Kindergarten experience, where they feel loved, seen and heard. There’s a quote, ‘They may forget what you said-but they will never forget how you made them feel.’ And that is what I carry with me as I’m with them every day. One practical thing I look forward to doing with them is the 3 Piggy Opera. I love music so it’s going to be exciting to share my passion for music with them in a new and different way!”

“I explored The Christ School for the next step in my career because my good friends, who we moved from California to Florida for, raved about it!” says Marqetta. “I have them to thank for introducing us to the blessing that is TCS. When I toured the campus and talked with Mr. Noto and Dr. Farrant, I knew this school was different from other private schools. The emphasis of Christ drew me and there was no other school I would have rather taught at, even more have my own children attend. I have already enjoyed experiencing the kindness and authentic hearts of everyone here. Everyone has a heart to love others and be helpful and it makes for a beautiful work environment.”

Marqetta shares her favorite Bible verses:
One is Galatians 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
She also considers Colossians 3:17, Psalm 24 and Psalm 91 to be favorites as well!

LIFT! Learning Instruments for Truth

This year, we are pleased to add more instrumental music into our lower school offerings. We recognize the benefits that learning to play an instrument brings to students’ growth and development as well as the opportunities it provides for students to continue to play in both middle and high school. When we realized we wouldn’t be able to offer Spanish in the lower school this year, the Lord provided an incredible person to help us get our lower school instrumental program off the ground! Susan Porr is a classically trained clarinetist who has performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the White House, Carnegie Hall and a former member of the US Army Band. She is thrilled to start “LIFT”, which stands for “Learning Instruments For Truth”, where students in TK – 5th grade will learn music through playing boomwhackers, ukuleles, marimbas, recorders and more as they learn the foundation of instruments and lift each other up in joyful sounds along the way! We’re excited to have this as part of our lower school special areas program and look forward to incorporating these instruments into our performances throughout the year.

Meet Ashlen Moss, our new School Counselor

The Christ School is delighted to welcome Ashlen Moss to our family. Ashlen will have an important role to assist our students and families – School Counselor. Ashlen attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and majored in Psychology and Child and Family Studies with a Community Outreach concentration. She also attended Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando and earned her Master of Arts in Counseling.

“I am so excited to begin our counseling program at TCS!” says Ashlen. “My hope is that I can not only be a resource to students but to families as well. This will include counseling students both individually and in groups, teaching Social Bridges, our social emotional curriculum, and giving families resources for other mental health needs and services in the community.”

Ashlen has been married to her husband, Ethan, for 6 years. “I love running, hanging out with friends and family, playing board games, and going to the Disney parks,” she says. “I am eager to join the TCS community. I have been blown away by how loving and supportive everyone is. I think it’s wonderful to join a community that loves the Lord and cares deeply for not only the education of each student but their well-being as a whole.”

Ashlen shares her favorite Bible verse:
Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

TCS Exudes Joy!

The Christ School was delighted to receive this wonderful message from one of our neighbors. Our love and joy shines through and spreads to those around us! We are excited to share the message with you:

“I drive by The Christ School in the morning on my way to work. It took me several months before I realized that this is an amazing way to start my day. I might even say, it adjusts my thinking and starts my day on a positive note. Each morning I see families walking their kids to school. Without exception, these families are animated and happy and interacting with each other. One day I thought I was going to have to rescue a mom from the street. She was laughing really hard with her daughter (I thought she might fall over)! One morning I witnessed a dad putting his arm over the shoulder of his son as his son was telling him something. Suddenly the son was wrapped in the dad’s arms as they laughed and his other son jumped in. What joyful moments! I finally realized how happy these children are to go to school. They wouldn’t be this happy on their way if they were going to be miserable at school. I called the school to tell them this and learned that they work hard to make school a welcoming place, not only for children, but for families. They are obviously succeeding. The perhaps unintended benefit of this school is the impact they have on the neighborhood. I look forward to driving by in the morning! I hope I am not the only one who notices.”
