Get to Know – Erin Oglesby

The Christ School welcomes Erin Oglesby to our family. Erin, who joined our Bridge team as a 2nd grade teacher, has an engaging and welcoming personality that can make you feel like you are a familiar friend. “Truth be told, I am an alien,” Erin smiles. “No, not from Mars, but Montreal. When I was in first grade, my father, an Episcopal priest, was called to a new ministry in the United States. We left Canada during a blizzard and arrived in the Sunshine State wearing snowsuits! Don’t worry, there was a cold front and it was a cool 83 degrees. Since that move I have lived in Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, DC, and Maryland. I have been married almost 20 years to my college sweetheart and have two creative sons, Matthew and Andrew. I love the arts and have a passion for musical theatre. Here is a fun fact – years ago, I performed a solo cabaret show in Orlando at a dinner attraction.”

“God had a plan that I could never have imagined that brought me to The Christ School,” Erin continues. “I was researching schools and came across the amazing things TCS was doing to help students with dyslexia. At that time, I had multiple students in my classroom who were diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia and I was constantly looking for ways to best support their needs. After learning about TCS’s Bridge program, I mentioned it to my resource specialist in Maryland. I had long wished that our school could support students with a program like The Bridge. Flash forward a few months to a social media post calling for a teacher for Bridge and, well, the rest is history. There is not a doubt in my mind that God’s hand was guiding this incredible opportunity.”

“I love teaching,” says Erin. “Especially in the early elementary years. I love all the light bulb moments and the excitement and the passion they have for learning. I love to see the smile on my students’ faces when they ‘get it’. Now, that smile has a different meaning. That smile means so much more to me when I not only see, but know, how many obstacles that child has had to overcome in order to reach success. That smile is worth everything!”

Erin continues, “My class at TCS is spectacular. The students are creative, artistic, fabulous storytellers, and super funny. They come to school each day with a smile on their face and perseverance to conquer any challenge that may stand in their way. Each day I watch my students be more confident in themselves and their abilities. I treasure those moments when they look up from an activity or lesson and say ‘Mrs. O, look at what I did!’ I can’t wait to see how each of them bloom; not only academically, but also spiritually this year.”

“Not only do I love the students at TCS, but the faculty and staff are out of this world,” she says. “Christ’s love is everywhere! Everyone is so friendly and helpful. Moving to Orlando has been a huge transition for my family and TCS has gone over and above to make sure we feel welcomed and loved. All day, every day, the building is filled with smiles, laughter, and love. TCS really lives out their mission of sharing Christ’s love. My son, Andrew, started TCS in 6th grade this year. He is a showman and loves music, performing, and entertaining. Spotlight, the musical theater class here, has been such a wonderful experience for him. I know that he values the friendships and adventures TCS has provided in the short time we have been a part of the school.”

Erin shares her favorite Bible verses:

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. –  Jeremiah 29:11

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. – Philippians 4:13

“Every time I come across a difficult moment in my life, I remember these passages. I try my best to live my life to His glory and know He has this amazing plan and all I need to do is listen,” she says.

Get to Know – Nicole Kilpatrick

“I have always loved books and sharing my love for them with children,” says Nicole Kilpatrick, who joined The Christ School team as Media Specialist this year. “Sharing exciting stories with my students and helping them to develop a love of reading is such a joy.” Before coming to TCS, Nicole, a native of Wisconsin, taught third grade. “When I heard there was a Media Specialist position available at TCS I was excited about the opportunity. I have really enjoyed getting to work with students in various grade levels.”

“My favorite author is Ted Dekker,” Nicole continues. “I love stories that pull you into another world and make you want to keep reading. I am excited to share my favorite children’s books with the students. I want them to discover how stories can take you to different places and allow you to  explore new worlds.”

“As Yearbook Advisor, it has been wonderful to engage with my students and help them document all of the special moments at TCS. It is fun to see all of the things we do at our school through the eyes of my students.” she says.

“I am enjoying being a part of The Christ School,” Nicole says. “The best part of working here are the amazing people I get to work with; the staff and the students!”

Nicole has many varied interests including reading, crocheting, and playing board games. “A fun fact about me is that I used to do all types of dance including aerial acrobatics!” she smiles.

Nicole shares her favorite Bible verse:
“Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might.” –  Ecclesiastes 9:10

Lessons from Social Bridges

Lower school social bridges students are building positive connections between class members. They have been talking about and practicing the social skill of matching. They are learning to match in 5 ways: Topic (is what I’m saying staying on topic?), Mood (does my mood match with what’s going on?), Body (do my body and movements match what is expected?), Voice (is my volume appropriate?) and Activity (am I doing what is expected of me during this time?). They are learning that when they match, they are helpful class members. When they don’t match, they stall the activity or draw the attention away from whomever is leading at the time. The students have also talked about empathy and when we are being empathetic, we look at someone’s body language, listen to them, and try to see what would be helpful if we were feeling the same way.

Discovering Prosthetics

Enrichment students have been learning about the Paralympics, and how prosthetics help athletes compete. On Tuesday, Shawnie Whitaker, a Lyman High School alumni who lost his leg in a car accident at age 16, spoke to the classes. He explained how “his loss was actually his gain,” because after his accident he turned to God to discover what God’s purpose was for his life. He shared that he was an avid surfer prior to the accident and how prosthetics and the encouragement from his friends and surfboard sponsor helped him get back to surfing. Shawnie showed the students pictures of his recent surfing contest where he won gold in the US Open Adaptive Surfing Championships and shared his joy for helping others learn to surf and his devotion to God. The students learned about the different prosthetics he uses – one for walking, one for running, and one for surfing and how the prosthetic is made to fit onto his leg. To demonstrate how tight of a fit he can get with his prosthetic, he let several students try to pull it off. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to hear from someone who uses prosthetics and embraces every moment of life!

Get to Know – Kaylin Garrett

The Christ School welcomes Kaylin Garrett, who joined our team as a second grade teacher this year. Kaylin grew up in Orlando and has fond memories of our campus when she attended the youth group at FPCO. “I chose to come to TCS to teach because I was looking for a school that had a staff and administration that would support, guide, and push me to be the best teacher I can be,” says Kaylin. “I also wanted to be at a school that had a close knit community and involved parents. TCS checked all of the boxes!  The second you walk in the door you can see the joy of the Lord through the students and staff. I am so thankful the Lord opened up a position for me at TCS. Everywhere you turn there are smiles, laughs, and hugs. This positivity and joy carries into the support that I feel each day.”

Kaylin continues, “I have known since I was a little girl that I wanted to be a teacher, but the love for teaching really came in high school when I was a nanny and helped the  children with their homework each day. Seeing that spark in their eyes when they finally got a concept that I was teaching them was the true inspiration. That spark has continued to be one of my favorite things about teaching. I love that I am able to play such a major role in my students’ lives and get to teach them not only academics, but also to be loving and kind.”

“My favorite thing about teaching second grade is that the students have a major thirst for learning and being at school,” she says. “I love that we are mastering their foundational skills before moving onto more difficult skills. I also love the emphasis on independence in second grade. This year I look forward to growing relationships with my students and seeing them shine. I am excited about diving deeper into reading with my students as they learn more about reading to learn rather than learning to read. I also look forward to the tradition of second grade walking lunches.”

Kaylin, the youngest of four girls, enjoys spending time with her family and her new puppy. “I love to take her to the park and on walks,” she smiles.

Kaylin shares her favorite Bible verse: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. – Philippians 4:6
“This verse has always stood out to me, and is even more prevalent in the times we are in today. I try really hard to be in constant prayer to God, no matter the circumstance,” she says.

Get to Know – Christina Bowman

The Christ School is excited to welcome Christina Bowman to our third grade team this year.  “As a child, I had the most amazing experience attending a K-8 Christian school and have always desired to have the opportunity to be a part of providing a positive experience like that for children,” says Christina. “One of my favorite verses, because of the assurance it gives, is  Isaiah 60:22 – When the time is right, I the Lord, will make it happen. I felt that God led me to The Christ School and made it clear that this was part of His plan for my life. While I have only just joined The Christ School family this year, it already feels like home. I am so grateful for the Lord’s guidance that led to my place here.”

Christina has been a teacher for nearly 12 years. “Growing up, I had many wonderful teachers that had such a positive and meaningful impact on my life,” she says. “My favorite teacher was Miss Gross, who taught 4th grade. She played a huge role in inspiring me to become a teacher. Over the years, she has been a teacher and role model turned mentor and life long friend to me. To this day she is an incredible influence in my life and someone I deeply admire. She continues to inspire, support, and encourage me. As a teacher myself now, I strive to develop that same positive and meaningful relationship with my students.”

Christina continues, “It is always my desire for our classroom to be a place where my students feel loved and safe to be able to learn, make mistakes, be themselves, and grow. One of my favorite things about teaching is seeing the students’ different personalities and how they each have such an important role in our classroom family. I love learning about their interests and the special and unique qualities, characteristics, and talents that God created in each of them. They all bring joy to our classroom in their own way each and every day!”

“I love The Christ School and its mission so much already!” Christina shares. “It is an incredibly special place and I truly feel so blessed and grateful to be a part of it. The uplifting community, the Christ-like attitudes, the positive atmosphere, and the LOVE for every child. While it is hard to describe the “difference” and what makes The Christ School so wonderful, what it all comes down to is the center of it, God. He is in this school, in its leaders, in its people. He is in this place and it is evident as you walk through it’s halls and He shines through the smiles and the hearts of the people that are a part of it.”

When not at work, Christina enjoys spending time with her family, her 2 year old niece, and 5 year old nephew. “They bring so much joy to my heart,” she says. “I also love spending time in the sunshine, especially at the beach and the mountains; some of my favorite places to be. I enjoy travelling, especially to Nashville, my favorite city. I love crafting, creating, decorating, and shopping.”

Christina shares her favorite Bible verses:

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.Psalm 139:14
“This is always one I hold near and dear to my heart- to know the love God has for each and every one of us is so special and so important,” says Christina. “I want my students to always know this truth. I desire to make them feel as loved and cherished as they are, that they see the value and worth they have in Jesus, as he created us in His image!”

Perhaps this is the moment for which you were created. –  Esther 4:14
“I love this verse and the excitement it brings for any moment in our life!” Christina says.

Get to Know – Meredith McMurtrie

The Christ School is delighted to welcome Meredith McMurtrie to our kindergarten team this year.  Meredith, a 16-year veteran kindergarten teacher, brings her knowledge, love, and enthusiasm to her classroom. “I knew from a young age I wanted to be a teacher,” says Meredith. “I was blessed with teachers who poured their love and knowledge into me and made learning purposeful and meaningful. While in college, I was a youth ministry intern. I felt that I didn’t necessarily have to work for a church full time to be in ministry, but that my classroom would be my mission field. Like St. Francis of Assisi said, ‘Share the gospel daily and, when necessary, use words.’”

“I love teaching kindergarten,” Meredith shares. “I love the giggles, hugs and endless stories and questions. I love their inquisitive minds and being able to pour truth into their minds and hearts. Many people underestimate the mind of a kindergarten child. Much too often, children are placed in a box and adults don’t expect much from them. Well, I love to show what their minds are capable of.”

“I live for the “AHA” moments,” she continues. “I love for a child to be able to explain why leaves change color in the fall or demonstrate the many ways to represent numbers including addition and subtraction facts. There is an innocence about kindergarten students, but they also have such a strong desire to be independent, yet shower me with hugs, it’s truly the perfect balance.”

This year, I especially look forward to forming relationships with my students and their families and making memories that the children will carry with them for years to come,” she says. “Although field trips and performances are heaps of fun, it’s the day to day, circle time and small group discussions where connections are made and ‘aha moments’ occur.”

Meredith’s son Jase, much like his mom with a bright and cheerful character, has also joined TCS this year as a kindergarten student. “I saw the opportunity at The Christ School for my child to have the values and faith based education, along with a foundation of critical thinking and leadership that he will carry with him into adulthood,” says Meredith.

“There is such a loving, caring community at The Christ School,” Meredith continues. “For example, I love how Mr. Noto knows every child by name. When he comes in to join our class for chapel or sees the students in the halls, he is so purposeful with calling the children by name. To know the students are seen and loved, is a true joy. The children beam when he says their name and you can tell how meaningful it is to their little hearts.”

Meredith and her husband, Jeff, have two children, 5 year old Jase and 2 year old Sawyer. “My hobbies are anything my boys are into so right now it’s soccer, fishing, and tee ball,” she smiles.

Meredith shares her favorite Bible verse:
For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.Isaiah 43:19
“This brings me so much hope knowing that when I’m in those valleys, the Lord is working behind the scenes, steps ahead of me paving the way for me,” says Meredith.

Student Support, by Alissa Plaisance – Coping with Grief and Loss

As all of us cope with grief and loss, our feelings can be overwhelming. It is important for our children to have an outlet and a way to express themselves as they maneuver through the feelings that can come up over the coming days and weeks. Here are a few resources that may be of value to you.

New Hope for Kids offers free grief counseling to the community. If you are a parent of middle school age students, I highly recommend this book by Will Hutcherson and Chinwe Williams. It is a short but important read and it gave me some tools to better connect with students that may have feelings of dispair. We were also blessed by Redeemer and Grace Orlando Counselors last week. If you are interested in seeing one of them or another organization, here are quick links to counselors in our community equipped to help us all navigate through helping our children.

Get to Know – Steve Eastwood

Steve Eastwood joins The Christ School team this year as 7th and 8th grade Bible teacher.  Well known and liked by many of our students through his work in student ministry at FPCO, Steve is a welcome addition to our school for our students and staff alike.

“I was involved in the ministry of Young Life in high school and college,” says Steve. “After leading alongside a close friend for several years, we both joined the staff at First Pres. Orlando and I served in the student ministry for 11 years.”

“I felt called and led by the Lord to teach at The Christ School, and I continue to rely on Him daily,” says Steve. “Beyond that, I’ve always had a heart for teenagers and for teaching, and I’ve admired TCS from a short distance for many years! My favorite part of teaching Bible is watching my students engage with the text and understand that the living God is actively pursuing them in the midst of it all.”

“So far, my favorite thing about TCS has been the consistent daily time spent with the students,” he says. “I was pumped to go to Southwind with everyone for the Middle School Retreat and I’m hoping for more opportunities to leave the classroom together. I also welcome the opportunity to serve and equip parents in the discipleship of their children.”

Steve and his wife, Amber, have been married for 13 years. They have three children and a new puppy. “I love being with people, exploring the world, and enjoying music, movies and sports. I LOVE snow and cold weather!” says Steve.

“I don’t really have a favorite verse, but Psalm 23 has been a very important passage recently,” says Steve.

Get to Know – Shelby McCastlain

The Christ School is pleased to introduce Shelby McCastlain, who joined our team this year as a third grade teacher. Shelby, who grew up in Oviedo, earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Florida. After college, she moved to Tampa to begin her teaching career.

“I think children are incredible. The way their minds work inspires me to be imaginative, fun, and to see the good in everything. I wanted to become a teacher because of my own experience in elementary school,” says Shelby.  “I went to a great school and I know how much it can impact the rest of your life. I wanted to be a part of that kind of community again, living each day building relationships and making lasting memories. This time, on the side of a teacher,” she says.

“My favorite thing about teaching third grade is the age of my students!” Shelby continues. “We laugh at the same jokes, talk about songs and movies we like, and have great conversations. Although they are getting older and more independent, they are still little and eager to learn each day.”

“This year, I am looking forward to the growth I will see in my students and in myself. I hope we grow academically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. My goal is for every child to walk out of my room everyday feeling loved and capable of anything,” she says.

Shelby has enjoyed being part of The Christ School community. “My favorite part about TCS is how the faculty and staff go above and beyond for each other and the students. I have never been in such a caring environment,” she says. “Every person I have met wants to lift others up in any way they can. The focus of everything is what is best for each individual student. When the school is described as Christ-centered, I’ve noticed that it’s not only the teaching of the Bible, it’s that Jesus’ light and love radiate through everyone who walks into this building. What an incredible thing to be around every day!”

Shelby has two older brothers who live in Orlando. “We have a very close relationship,” she says. “I like to spend my free time reading, being active outside, spending time with my friends and family, or taking care of my dog. I have a two year old Australian Shepherd who is my pride and joy. I spend a lot of time taking him to the dog park.”

Shelby shares her favorite Bible Verse:

Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. – Proverbs 31:25

“I remember reading this when I was about 13 years old and it’s something I’ve strived for ever since,” says Shelby. “I want to be covered in God’s strength and trust His plan to the fullest so that I can smile at my future instead of worrying about it. I really want to be a Proverbs 31 kind of girl!”

Get to Know – Katie Sampson

Welcome to Katie Sampson, first grade teacher. Katie, who was born and raised in Miami, married her husband Kristoffer this past June. She enjoys spending time outdoors, practicing Pilates, and making memories with my friends & family.

Katie has been a teacher for six years, primarily with first grade. “My mother was my inspiration for becoming a teacher. From her, I learned of my gift of encouraging others, patience and how impactful it can be,” she says.

“There are so many reasons I love teaching first grade,” Katie continues. “First grade students are hilarious! Some of the funniest moments in my life have happened within classroom walls.”

“As a first grade teacher, there are ample opportunities to create and try new things,” says Katie. “I have always loved to create, and I am constantly presented with opportunities to learn and grow as a teacher. I look forward to creating a teamwork culture within our classroom; working with individual strengths, communicating openly with one another, fostering creativity through camaraderie, and celebrating team successes. We are all unique beings; there is so much beauty in that!”

Katie is happy to be working at The Christ School. “My favorite thing about TCS so far has been our leadership team and staff. I feel empowered, encouraged, and challenged. It sure feels good to be a LION!”

Katie shares her favorite Bible verse:
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching. – Hebrews 10:24-25

Impactful Disciple

TCS middle school Bible teacher, Josh Smith, has made a big impact on our students and school since his arrival through his enthusiastic love for Christ, joyful spirit and encouraging words. This summer, Josh and his family have decided to return to Cambodia, where they began a journey of love and hope. “My wife, Hillary, two children, and I lived in Cambodia for about 3 years prior to working at TCS,” says Josh. “We wanted to share the Gospel with the unreached people of Cambodia, open a school for the poor, a prostitute prevention center, care for young mothers, and plant a church. We were beginning this work when a family emergency came up, which caused us to return to the US. We feel the Lord calling us to return to the work that He started through us there.”

While in Cambodia, Josh and Hillary began a ministry, Cambodia4JesusChrist.com. “Our main mission is and always will be to share the Good News of Jesus Christ where His name has not been preached yet. But we also will be planting a church, starting a school, and working with many hurting families, providing employment opportunities and education,” continues Josh. “Although I have always worked to support my family, we feel the Lord calling us to ask the body of Christ for support. We are hoping to receive full support so that we can pursue planting a school in the slum and the ministry of evangelism full time when we return.”

“I love TCS and have enjoyed my time here,” says Josh. “If we were staying in the US, I would love to remain and teach the wonderful students here for many more years. The administration here has been amazing and I have felt fully supported as a teacher. The faculty and staff have been so loving and Christlike. But most of all, the students have been so humble, receptive, and eager to learn Truth! I will greatly miss being at TCS and would love to stay connected with the community for many years.”

Please join us as we pray for Josh and his family as they work to serve people in Cambodia.

Exploring Landmarks

First grade students have been learning about American landmarks and symbols. They have been exploring the meanings of these symbols and the importance of them to our country. Last week, they collaborated in teams to showcase their creativity and critical thinking skills to create models of the Statue of Liberty. The students included details such as her headdress with 7 spikes to represent oceans and continents, her robe, representing the Roman Goddess of Freedom, and her tablet inscribed with the date of the Declaration of Independence. Enjoy photos on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Analyzing Literature

Sixth grade ELA students are reading the novel, I Love You, Michael Collins, based on the launch and successful mission of Apollo 11 in 1969. They are participating in mini-projects to help them understand more about that historic mission and the astronauts who were a part of it. They have been analyzing the plot, setting, and characters of the book by rotating through literature circles; responding to the text through questioning strategies, vocabulary exploration, visualizing the scene, identifying the main parts of the plot, and connecting the story to their own lives. This novel study coincides with the 6th grade science unit on space.

Community Leader

A big Lions’ Roar to TCS 7th grade student Sadie Hansen, who discovered a need and is making it her mission to fill it. “I was researching service opportunities and learned that many girls have to prioritize what they purchase, and feminine hygiene products were not a priority,” says Sadie. After making some calls to local high schools, she discovered that this is a problem right here in our community. “The first two schools told us that they are pretty consistently blessed with food donations, but feminine hygiene products are often just completely overlooked,” says Sadie’s mother, Donna. With that in mind, Sadie began the Sister Swan Project, dedicated to filling this important need. “In February, I put a script together and created a video to ask people for donations and tell them what we were doing,” says Sadie. “Within less than an hour, people were starting to donate money to the project and were sending products to my house!”

Sadie began by bringing donations to Evans High School and soon realized that this need was ongoing and widespread. Additional schools have reached out to the Sister Swan Project, including elementary schools. “Since we received donations from as far away as Texas, we have even given products to a high school there,” Sadie continues. “I would like to get enough donations before the end of school this year so I can give a big supply to girls to use over the summer.”

“The Sister Swan Project means a lot to me because I know that I am making a difference in the girls’ lives,” says Sadie. “I enjoy helping people and this project helps girls to be able to go to school and do their after school activities without having to worry about being properly protected.”

“This has been a fabulous learning experience for Sadie,” says her mother, Donna. “Not just because she’s learned about the needs of those whose life circumstances are different than ours, but she’s learned about how to attract interest to a cause, how to educate people about your mission, how to track donations, how to thank people for donations and more.”

Their website is still under construction, but it will be ready soon! In the meantime, to learn more about the Sister Swan Project, email SisterSwanProject@gmail.com.
