April’s Acts of Kindness Week April 26-30

We have loved seeing all of the Community Service Bingo cards this week, filled with wonderful acts of kindness! Our April Acts of Kindness Week runs through this Friday. We hope it inspires our students to continue serving others all year!

Along with the theme of April’s Acts of Kindness, our middle school students have been collecting items for our 8th grade students’ capstone service trip which is right around the corner! In preparation for the work they will do for Appalachia Service Project May 3 through 7, we are collecting the following items from our middle school families:

  • New or gently used hammers, screwdrivers, and measuring tapes
  • New work gloves and first aid kits
  • Lowe’s gift cards to purchase lumber and insulation

OR

  • Select items from the Amazon wish list and ship directly to Zack Schoettes in Johnson City, TN.

We will be collecting items through Friday, April 30. Most importantly, we ask for your prayers for our 8th grade students, teachers and parents. May they be the hands and feet of Jesus as they serve this community. Thank you for helping us serve these families in need! Please reach out to Angela Harrison if you have any questions.

Last week, our 3rd-5th grade Spanish Lions practiced talking about their daily routine. They had a conversation with at least 10 friends from class by asking in Spanish: What do you do in the morning/afternoon /night? They are also beginning to learn about telling time in Spanish and using the days of the week. This week, students are learning about personal pronouns and how to conjugate verbs in Spanish. The goal is to be able to talk about the activities they do as well as others. This is an accomplishment Middle School Spanish I students have done and is an essential step to building fluency. It is great to see our Lower School lions constantly growing and improving in Spanish.

CTP Testing

The Christ School administers standardized testing in the spring to all students in grades 1-8. We use the Comprehensive Testing Program (CTP Online), a test used by many other private schools. Grade levels will be testing only in the morning on specific days, per the schedule below. Classwork assignments and homework will be reduced during the testing days to alleviate any undue stress. Please help encourage your child in the hard work and learning they have shown throughout the year and that there is nothing more they need to do to prepare for this test.

CTP Online Assessment – General Testing Schedule:
2nd, 6th – 8th: April 13-15 (April 16 also for Algebra 1 and Geometry students)
1st, 3rd – 5th: April 20-22

How does TCS use standardized testing results?
The CTP is just one way that we measure student progress and the effectiveness of our curriculum resources. Standardized testing results provide us with distinct snapshots representing a child’s educational growth, and we use both the individual and group data to reflect and plan our day-to-day instruction and curriculum development. The CTP Online subject area tests align with our objectives (what we expect our students to know and be able to do) and yield useful results. Children and parents are encouraged not to stress unnecessarily over the results of the testing.

How can you help prepare your child?
Parents play an important role in helping children do well by making sure their child gets a good night’s sleep and has a nutritious breakfast. Here are some additional tips to help your children do their best:

  • Be sure students are on time each day. The classrooms are open at 7:45 a.m. and students are encouraged to use the window of time prior to chapel to settle in for the day. Children who rush into class at the last minute often feel less confident in successfully completing the tasks for the day.

  • Assure your child that he or she is very capable and well prepared; encourage them to give their best effort.

  • Students may need to remain quiet while others finish. Help your child select a good book to read when they are finished testing.

  • MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENTS: Remind your child to charge their Chromebook each night. They will be using their Chromebooks for testing and need a full battery charge. Students should bring their charger in case they need to use it during testing.

IMPORTANT NOTE: To ensure the integrity of the testing environment, students will not be admitted into the classrooms once testing has begun. Please ensure your child arrives at school on time. Any student who arrives after testing has begun will need to sit in the office and wait until a break in the testing session to join their class. The opportunity for make-up of missed tests is very limited. Our priority will be to provide make-up sessions for students who missed school due to a medical emergency or illness. All make-up tests will need to be completed during our testing window (April 12-22).

When will you receive your child’s CTP scores?
A copy of your child’s test scores will be sent home with the final report card the first week of June. We are glad to help with any questions regarding the score reports after you’ve received them.

If you have any questions regarding the CTP, please contact TJ Ross, Alissa Plaisance or Michael Noto.

Christian Living

Sixth grade Bible students are reflecting on what they have learned about Christian living this year and how to apply the principles. They have been asking, “What do we do with all of the gifts we have been given, like gratitude, empathy, mercy, peace, and hope?” The students have been studying the significance and influence of missions on the early church and how it has shaped the world we live in now. They researched influential missionaries and discovered what they have contributed to advancing the Kingdom of God. The students will continue learning about those who are actively serving in the mission field and preaching the gospel in foreign countries as they consider the call God has on their life.

Lessons from the Holocaust

Eighth grade ELA students are learning about the Holocaust. As they delve into this unit of study, they are discovering how one person can make a difference and how people possess the power to make their own choices and control their own behaviors. They are exploring that when prejudice is allowed to thrive, lives are at stake, and bystanders can be just as guilty as perpetrators. As they analyze this topic, the students confront present concerns involving loyalty, peer pressure, conformity, belonging, and scapegoating. When faced with these concerns, they can remember the fate of the Holocaust victims, and rather than ignore the others’ wrongdoings, help to create better situations for those who are victimized. Their teacher, Mrs. Sheldon, says, “We study and remember the mistakes made in the past so that we never repeat them. To honor Holocaust victims, we will celebrate the freedom to choose to act in the face of prejudice so that fateful events such as the Holocaust will never happen again.”

Sixth grade Earth Science students have been exploring the wonder of God’s creation, as well as our role in protecting it, while learning about the amazing world of plants. Throughout this unit, they have researched the vital role of healthy ecosystems, various “green careers,” plant-based solutions to community problems, and how hybrids can be developed to address specific needs. The students were able to see these concepts come to life with the visit of an interactive bus “field trip” on our campus. They had an opportunity to grind wheat, take part in a scavenger hunt, and plant seeds of a native plant.

Money Matters

Second grade students began an exploration of Economics by reading Money Madness, by David Adler. This expository text explores the concepts of bartering, the history of money, and how we use money today. The students created a timeline about the history of money that spanned from bartering in 6000 B.C. to digital money in modern times. In this unit of study, the students will explore the concept of supply and demand, how people must make choices because of limited resources, the benefits and costs of saving and spending, and how the US trades with other nations for goods and services.

Developing Confident Speakers

TCS 6th grade students participate in a Youth Leadership/Public Speaking course to develop communication and leadership skills. The ability to express yourself clearly so that you are heard and understood is a lifelong skill. The students speak before an audience, evaluate each other and give feedback, practice impromptu speaking, discover the principle of good listening, lead entire sessions, and present their thoughts and ideas logically and convincingly. Their teacher, Mrs. Gibbs says, “Our Youth Leadership/Public Speaking course is a program of Toastmasters International and our sessions resemble an adult Toastmasters’ session. It is amazing to see the students develop their confidence as they step into the various roles each speaking session offers.”

Feel Good Fridays

Every Friday afternoon, both fifth grade homerooms gather together for a time of fellowship, reflection, and fun. The weekly tradition of “Feel Good Fridays” has brought the students closer together and is a great way to wrap up the week. The groups kick off this time with the students sharing what has been going on in their own lives that makes them feel good. Fifth grade teacher, Ms. Forbes says, “The comments shared have brought both roars of laughter as well as tears. What has made this sharing time so special is that the children truly have begun to open up and allow themselves to be vulnerable with one another.” During their time together, they have completed STEAM challenges, worked on their STORES project, set grade level goals, participated in ice breakers, learned about and participated in popcorn prayer, and most recently, ventured outside to compete in a photo scavenger hunt. Ms. Forbes continues, “The time spent with each other has been a game changer! The weekly event has allowed the grade to slow down a bit and enjoy the gift of one another’s company and strive to build a stronger community.” Ms. Combs added, “Our fifth grade family looks forward to this time each week with great anticipation. We cherish these moments!”

Exploring Life Cycles

Second grade students are exploring life cycles in a cross curricular unit. In Bible, they learned about the Parable of the Sower and the Parable of the Mustard Seed. After reading about different types of soil, the students engaged in a hands-on lab where they observed properties of different soil samples. As this unit continues, experiments will help our students discover which soil is best to grow seeds. They are looking forward to making recycled terrariums to observe plant life cycles and exploring the life cycle of Florida butterflies.

Coding a Sandwich Builds Important Skills

Middle school coding and robotics students developed algorithms to code the steps to make a sunflower seed butter and jelly sandwich. Working in teams, they wrote their codes and asked their teacher, Ms. Wilkins, with ingredients in hand, to try each step. The students quickly discovered that coders must use very precise language and each step must be carefully considered. Details such as untying a twist tie, opening the bag, and taking out exactly two pieces of bread were forgotten, and then included, as the students worked through their carefully-crafted codes!

Snow Much Fun!

Our littlest Lions have been learning about all things snow. Since many of them have never seen snow, they decided to create their own snow in their classroom. Using various materials including corn starch, baking soda, conditioner, glitter and shaving cream, they created different types of “snow” and compared the differences between them such as which was the softest, crunchiest, and easiest to make snowballs with.  They also made a blizzard in a jar and experimented with freezing a variety of items. These wintery activities were perfect for a not-so-cold January week!

Real World Experience

Among our middle school elective class offerings is an option to serve as an assistant to a teacher or staff member at TCS.  Our student assistants help in a variety of ways and have opportunities to explore the field of education while building relationships with teachers, staff and students. Students begin the semester by creating a resume, which they use to introduce themselves to their assigned teacher or staff member. To build their resume, the students describe the skills they possess related to their assigned role, calculate their GPA, choose a favorite quote or Bible verse and ask teachers to provide references. This elective offers many opportunities to gain real world experience!

STEAM Nativity Engineers

Lower school STEAM students have been hard at work over the past few weeks designing and building a nativity scene. Students studied the Biblical story and completed research to accurately depict the scene. Each grade created a specific part. TK students created sheep using recyclable materials. Kindergarten students made baby Jesus and his manger full of hay. The angel and star of Bethlehem were put together by our first grade students. Mary and Joseph were built and decorated by second grade students, and third grade students built the three wise men and their gifts. The stable and background pieces were designed and constructed by fourth grade students. The fifth grade students used their knowledge of paper circuits to add light features and put the scene together. They worked collaboratively with their class and grade level. This was a challenging task requiring hard work and dedication to make our nativity scene come to life!
